Sega have today announced a new squad-based shooter, Binary Domain
. It is being developed by Toshihiro Nagoshi, the creator behind many games including the Yakuza series.
The game places players in Tokyo in the year 2080, where robots have invaded the city. Players will control an international peace-keeping squad as you fight through the derelict lower levels of the city.
Toshihiro Nagoshi said:
What I wanted to create this time was a dramatic and energetic sci-fi shooter. When you hear sci-fi you may think of cold, clinical environments but with Binary Domain I wanted to combine this with a deep human drama. The keyword we have in mind for this project is “Life”. I wanted to make something that will be accepted by both the Japanese and Western markets and this fundamental theme is something everyone knows, but which the full extent of can be difficult to grasp.
The "highly advanced" AI has been developed to reflect the "life" theme that is central to the game. Players will have to be strategic and careful in order to progress through the game, and will question whether "the robots [are] becoming more human, or are humans becoming more like machines?"
Sega have released a teaser trailer for the game:
For those of you who can't watch the trailer at the moment, here's five screenshots taken from the trailer:
Is it me, but when the robot appeared in the trailer around the 2:50 mark, did anyone else think of Portal
gone slightly wrong?
