Evolve Goes Free to Play on Steam, Consoles to Follow

2016 may forever be known as the Leaky Year, with the rumor mill being correct more often than not. Another score for gossipers happened this morning when Evolve confirmed it would in fact be turning into a free-to-play model. This was already speculated earlier this week after Evolve's official website posted a countdown ticking down to today, but wouldn't say for what, and the title was later delisted from the Steam store.

The developers over at Turtle Rock Studios are calling it "Stage 2." Basically, the game didn't turn out to be everything they hoped it would be when it launched back in February 2015, and they'd like to give it another shot.

What's going to happen is, as of now, Evolve is free-to-play on Steam. A significant patch has already gone out on PC, which is going to be treated as a beta testing phase. Other platforms will follow after this testing period, which is expected to last several months with no set end date as of now.

According to the developers, they have made changes in accordance with community requests. Here is a general overview of some of the things they hope Stage 2 will accomplish:

  • We’re reworking the hunter classes to make the team less reliant on having experienced trappers and medics.
  • We’re making improvements to the maps and UI.
  • We’re improving load times, overall performance, and getting you into the game faster.
  • We’re focusing on improving stability and fixing bugs.
  • We’re completely reworking our progression system and tutorials.
  • We’re adding more customization options.

All of this of course begs the question, what happens to the people who paid for Evolve or purchased the DLC? Turtle Rock has addressed this. Previous purchasers are now called "Founders" and will be granted "Founders Status" in-game. All Founders will have their previously paid for content transferred over into the new model, and will also be eligible for "exclusive badges, skins and other cosmetic items." Founders playing Stage 2 have already been given "3,000 Silver Keys, all past and future Adaptations for previously owned Hunters and Monsters, dozens of Weapon Skins, and four unique, animated Founder badges," with future Founders content promised down the road.

For those interested in the new Evolve, it's already free to download and play on Steam. In the coming months, we can expect to hear more about when the next stage of Evolve is arriving for console. Thank you to several members of the community for sending this one in.
