Battlefield 1's Gameplay Series Shows Off Vehicles

Vehicles have always been an integral part of the Battlefield series. For many gamers, Battlefield was the first FPS series that they experienced that allowed players to engage in large full-scale warfare with planes, tanks and boats present on the battlefield. Vehicles will be as crucial to the experience, as always, in October's Battlefield 1.

In their Battlefield 1 Gameplay Series line of videos, the developers at DICE explain their thought processes when implementing World War I's various vehicles into the game. Tanks were a new development in armored warfare at the time, designed to destroy everything on the battlefield. The developers wanted players to get the true feeling of a tank's presence in a battle, which is that "you should be scared of it."

They also go over the differences between early planes and today's planes; naturally it will feel different to fly a World War I era plane than a fighter jet in Battlefield 3 or Battlefield 4. Planes of the time are described as "quite light but with really powerful engines, so you can feel gravity's pull when you climb and dive."

For the first time, DICE is also introducing Tank and Pilot classes. These classes can only be selected when spawning into a tank or plane.

"If you are in a tank, you should be playing a character that is specialized to taking care of his tank, to run his tank, to be as efficient as possible with the vehicle you choose," said Daniel Berlin, Lead World Designer.

This should address fans' issues in past games with planes being used for other purposes than providing pressure from the air. For example, a sniper class player may spawn in a plane, fly to an ideal sniping location, and abandon the plane as opposed to flying it and providing air support or combating enemy planes in the sky.

Battlefield 1 is out on October 21st, with early access on October 13th for EA Access members or October 18th for players who pre-order the Early Enlister Deluxe Edition.
