SMG Studios, an Australian indie game development team, has announced that they will be releasing a new co-op puzzle platformer title, titled Death Squared for Xbox One under the ID@Xbox program.

Death Squared sees co-op players control individual bots through different gameplay levels. The environments feature various traps and puzzles that have to be overcome or solved to progress safely. The twist is that a wrong step by one player can send the other player to their death, hence teamwork and communication are essential elements for success.

SMG Studios has confirmed that the game can be enjoyed by between one and four players, however the gameplay is best suited to multi-player. For playing alone, the two bots are controlled using each joystick separately, whereas playing in a group opens up the opportunity to explore more maps that have been specifically designed for multi-player action.

Patrick Cook, founder of SMG Studios explained more about the important skills that are required for Death Squared:
Death Squared rewards strong communication and instantly gives a crash course on its importance to gamers lacking the skill. Failure is part of the solution process, and through trial and error as well as teamwork, everyone can survive Death Squared's gauntlet of puzzles...whether friendships are still intact is a different story.
The teamwork and communication that Patrick Cook is referring to is demonstrated no better than in the game's announcement trailer, where the quirky bots bid for survival.

Death Squared is set for release in early 2017.
