March 2011 Indie Games Spotlight

Three more games for you to peruse

Written by mancide on 01 April 11 at 13:54

It is time for the third installment of the Indie Games Spotlight! I had a great response to last month's article, and have a slew of suggestions to work through, so if I didn't get to your suggestion in this edition, do not feel bummed out. I want to kick things off this month with a title that is a little bit out of the norm for an Indie Game, but I still loved it. I'm talking about Marksmen: Long Range.

Use realistic rifle controls to master the art of long-range shooting. Complete time trials, eliminate incoming zombie hordes, and play "rifle golf" to put your skills to the test.

RELEASE DATE: 3/10/2011
DEVELOPER: Andy Campbell
GENRE: Shooter

Marksmen: Long Range is not just simply a first-person shooter that has you only shooting at targets. It adds an element of steadying the rifle, slowly and firmly pulling the trigger, and offers a simulation as close to the real thing as you can get. The Zombie Horde mode is where this title really shines. Waves of "Zombie" targets wobble down the range towards you, and the only way to clear a target is to land a perfect head-shot. With a variety of different real-life weapons and scopes to select from, you will never run out of options to fend off these paper zombies. If the trial has you wanting more, you can pick up the full game for 80 MSP.

Suggested by Ergo Me Smart, Miner Dig Deep reminds me of a web-game I've played sometime in the recent past.

Dig and expand your mine to find greater treasures from the depths. Build the deepest mine so you can make your fortune in rare gems and metals from the earth below.

RELEASE DATE: 2/4/2009
DEVELOPER: Robir
GENRE: Action & Adventure

There is something about this game feels familiar, and it's not just the distant Dig Dug similarities. However, what this game offers is a never ending amount of digging, mining, and upgrading your equipment to dig deeper and find more valuable resources. But beware of boulders as they will send you back up to the surface unconscious and less all the precious minerals you found. Miner Dig Deep can be yours for 80 MSP.

Our last game this month comes by the way of maiden of haste who suggested I check out Gerbil Physics 2, and he must have secretly known my love of flinging small animals around in physics environments.

Our gerbil friends are back and they are more foolhardy then ever! Help them learn the impact of ropes, slingshots, bombs, disintegrators and machine guns on their slight furry forms. Venture into heaven, hell and several places in between exploring 40 new levels, mini-games, and dastardly puzzles. Gerbil Physics 2 is the most fun you can have with gerbils whilst still being borderline legal.

RELEASE DATE: 5/17/2010
DEVELOPER: Beringela
GENRE: Puzzle & Trivia

Much like Angry Birds, Gerbil Physics 2 presents you with several puzzles which must be solved by moving Gerbils trapped in odd shaped boxes around with bombs, ropes, and slingshots. In other words, this game was right up my alley! The physics are great, and the animations on the little furry faces as you place a bomb beside them are priceless. This game will also challenge your skills as you attempt to get the best possible time on each level. This is another steal at only 80 MSP.

As always, if you have a suggestion for an Indie Game you feel should be included in a future Indie Games Spotlight, please send a PM to mancide with your suggestion.

Some of the Indie games would be worth a spot in the XBL Arcade games.

I bought Miner Dig Deep yesterday - it was one of the few where I was disappointed when the demo time ran out. I nearly got myself stuck by digging too deep, but then remembered I'd bought myself a grapple hook before I went in.

I may have to try Gerbil Physics 2 - it looks like a lot of fun.

Groov is the best indie game ever made. I would pay $20 for an XBLA versionof Groov with achievements.

As much as I usually hate agreeing with people who say "No achievements no purchase" that's the case with these indie games. I feel like if I download the trial I'm pretty much getting the full experience anyway so why bother?

I'd rather see what the zombie part of Marksmen looks like. The shot up there doesn't make the game look interesting in the least.

Gerbil Physics 2 is getting a download. At the very least I think it's worth having it just to leave it on while I'm away from the console and have people go "WTF!?", that alone is worth 80MSP .

Miner Dig Deep looks a lot like Motherlode. It was/is a free web game that is terribly addictive. My friends and I had plenty fun playing that at school.
