E3 2011: EA Announces Overstrike

E3 2011: EA Announces Overstrike

New Insomniac-developed co-op title currently in the works

Written by Matrarch on 06 June 11 at 20:53

Insomniac Games, the developers behind Ratchet & Clank and Resistance, took their turn at today's EA Press Conference at E3 to announce their first multiplatform title, Overstrike, is currently in development.

Overstrike centers around a group known as the Overstrike 9. They are the only team that can take down an organization which is currently threatening to conquer the world. Overstrike is a four-player co-op game, which allows you to take control of one of the elite agents within the Overstrike 9; specifically either an ex-mercenary, a lifelong thief, a gifted young scientist or a decorated detective. While they are considered outcasts within their own organization, they are known to be the squad best-suited to take down the present threat.

Ted Price, CEO and Founder of Insomniac games spoke a little on the title.

Overstrike presents a unique blend of features that have long been a part of the Insomniac DNA: high powered gadgets, action-heavy gameplay, memorable characters in a deep and mysterious universe and of course a touch of humor and since this is our first multiplatform game, we’re especially excited to introduce ourselves to a new audience – one which may not have experienced our previous games.Several screens and a video were also released of Overstrike.

Looks decent. At least it's not Kinect like almost all the other game announcements coming out of E3

Insomniac are top-notch developers. Very excited to see them working cross-platform now. This looks to be a promising new IP.

I'm liking the art style -- not quite realistic, but close enough that it's obviously a conscious decision. Sort of a 90/10 real/cartoon ratio. Looks good.

Overstrike is a four-player co-op game, which allows you to take control of one of the elite agents within the Overstrike 9; specifically either an ex-mercenary, a lifelong thief, a gifted young scientist or a decorated detective.So... it's like Left 4 Dead, except it actually matters which character you're playing as? Sounds good to me.

Mattpm13 said:Looks decent. At least it's not Kinect like almost all the other game announcements coming out of E3Well, most of them were Kinect-enabled. As in, "it's there, but you don't have to use it." And this one very well could be, too. I think you're going to see things like voice-based squad commands more and more in traditional games. I know I've spent a lot of time wishing the AIs in Left 4 Dead would actually do what I keep yelling at them to do.

-same art style
-same team, 2 guys two girls
-a big main guy with a very similiar voice, a skinny black guy and a girl who turns invisible
-it had those grey ball things that cover people up
-and theyre secret agents

The best game Insomniac will release this year is most likely Resistance 3 which i will get on day 1, but i guess this one is good too as they are skilled devs.
Smurfquake - Well, looks like I'm gonna get kicked off the website. Nice getting to know you all. Find me on Xbox if you'd like.

Ah, a new IP in the waters of same ol'ness (not that that is *particularly* bad).
I will be keeping an eye on this, Insomniac is a good developer.

Super team fortress vibe when I watched this trailer, though I could agree with Incredibles too. But I'll agree with Hugh, way too light hearted.
You seem a little furious...

Looks pretty sweet even if there was no gameplay. Clever way to do a trailer; I'll give them props for that.

Really, I don't even know what you're saying here. Too light hearted for what? For you? Cheer up mon frere.

A colorful, stylized sci-fi shooter with co-op and a sense of humor? Everything about that trailer made me happy. I'm sick of boring, macho, grunting characters that run around shooting people in gray facilities on brown islands with puke-colored skies. Bring it on, EA.

I mean...I can see what he's saying. It seems to carefree as if it's a pixar game, maybe he was more going for it's hard to take seriously period. Some shooters are too bleak as you said but this is just too cheery for him I guess and to an extent I agree.
