Account Phishing - be careful

Hey all TA members,

We recently have had some instances of people trying to use our forum to phish for Live profiles. Are you really taking all necessary steps to maintain the security of your gamertag? Remember that Microsoft will NEVER ask you for your password. Never give it out to anyone. If anyone ever asks you for you password, DO NOT give it to them. I don't care if they are trying to help you fix something wrong with your profile or give you something for free.

If someone sends you to a link that has you log into your Windows live profile and it does not start with login.live.com, DO NOT log in. Chances are that website was designed to mimic the Live log in page and steals your log in information. Web designers who attempt that like to hide what they are doing. They may try to hide the address as login.live.hacker.com or hacker.com/login.live.com, don't fall for either of these. If the address bar does not start specifically with login.live.com, do not trust the site.

Also, even if you don't do either of the things listed above, make sure your profile password is as strong as you can remember. Using your birthday, pet name, birthplace, or the word "password" as your password, these are likely to be easily guessed. Use a mix of numbers, letters (both upper and lower case) and non-alphanumeric characters for your password if possible. Microsoft has provided a password strength tester that can be very helpful: http://www.microsoft.com/protect/yourself/password/checker.m...

Remember, the security of your profile starts with you. Most "profile hacking" instances happen because of poor judgment on the part of the account holder. When your profile gets hacked, these people can use your account to make massive Microsoft point purchases leaving you with a very large bill or they can hack your gamercard resulting in fraudulent achievements. When we here at TrueAchievements find the latter, we find it necessary to delete these profiles in order to maintain accurate stat keeping. It would be awful for you to loose credit for all your achievements because of a moments indiscretion.

So please be careful and sensible with your MS live account details.

Thanks all
Rich Stone
