Ace Combat Assault Horizon Multiplayer Details

Namco Bandai is pulling out all the stops for Ace Combat Assault Horizon, the latest entry in the long-running dog fighting franchise. The multiplayer offerings, a source of much frustration for achievement hunters in Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, are getting touched up. Front and center is a brand new play mode entitled "Capital City Battle."

In this mode two competing teams of eight pilots attempt to blow up the opposing team's base. Taking place in the sky over famous world capitals such as Washington D.C., Paris, Dubai and Miami (not a capital, but a breathtaking cityscape, so let's give them the benefit of the doubt), these battles will require a well balanced team composition of the four available aircraft classes.

Players can choose from the following aircraft: Fighters, Bombers, Attack Aircraft and Attack Helicopters. Each class has their own specialized role on the battlefield, which can be further enhanced through the usage of Call of Duty-style perks to improve turning ratios, stealth or simply increasing the raw firepower at your disposal.

Fighters are your standard dog fighting specialist. Able to trigger an unique "Dog Fight Mode" (DFM), Fighters are excellent against other aircraft but weak against ground-based, heavily armored targets.

Bombers are the opposite of the nimble Fighter class. Slow, unwieldy and vulnerable to aerial assaults, Bombers require protection from the rest of the team. The payoff for babysitting a Bomber? A payload that can level an opposing team's base in no time flat.

Attack Aircraft is the hybrid of the Fighter and Bomber classes. While they excel against ground targets utilizing low altitude angles of attack, Attack Aircraft can also fill the role of a Fighter in taking on opposing aircraft. Unique to this class is the "Air Strike Mode" (ASM) which allows them to unleash a devastating salvo of bombs and air-to-ground rocket clusters.

Finally we have the Attack Helicopters, an unique class in that they have full 3D freedom of movement. This allows Helicopters to fly under the radar, literally, in order to attack the opposing headquarters from behind. The trade off for unparalleled mobility and stealth is armor equivalent to that of a piece of paper.

Coordination between all these different types of aircraft is made easy thanks to the "Friendly Assist System" (FAS). The FAS allows up to three pilots to coordinate their strike in perfect unison, uniting the DGM and ASM for maximum devastation.

One thing that Namco-Bandai is not changing about the multiplayer is how amazing it looks. Feast your eyes on these stunning screenshots.

Finally, in a piece of news not related to the multiplayer but interesting to fans of the single player campaign, Namco-Bandai has announced the return of Kei Nagase from Ace Combat 5. The returning fan favorite is commemorated in this wallpaper artwork.
