The side scrolling beat 'em up arcade classic is set for a 3D remake to arrive on Xbox LIVE Arcade this September courtesy of Korean developer Barunson Interactive, and Co-Optimus
has gotten an exclusive preview of everything it has to offer. Double Dragon II: Wander of the Dragons
is based off the arcade version of Double Dragon II: The Revenge
, and along with the new subtitle, the game will feature a bevy of new upgrades and gameplay mechanics. While many features of the classic are still intact, new moves are featured in the game's new modern combo system.
Players can string together blows with the hit counter, and earn bonuses for certain types of strikes or well timed blocks. The famous cyclone kick returns, but new moves like a diving knee kick add new elements to the classic brawler. A heavy emphasis on weapons also remains, as players can hurt enemies or each other with a variety of gritty street weapons such as knives and two-by-fours. There's nothing like seeing an enemy swing for you and miss and end up hurting another bad guy!
The four large stages in the Story Mode will feature co-op play and plenty of foes to face off against, including several boss fights. Parts of the original are still present, but new sections and elements are seen as well, such as a level on top of a moving log truck. In addition to the Story is a Versus Mode, where you can play as Marian for the first time, the famed damsel in distress girlfriend from the Story. Finally a Survival Mode pits you against an endless wave of enemies.
Barunson has not confirmed whether or not co-op play would be Xbox LIVE enabled, which might be a deal breaker for some. While many fans were disappointed when Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
was local co-op only, it still was well received otherwise. That remains to be seen here.
You can see the updated graphics and the mix of old and new gameplay below in the screenshots and in-game video.
Double Dragon II: Wander of the Dragons
is slated for a September 2011 release for 1200 MSP.
