Yesterday marked the final day of Halo Fest at PAX Prime 2011, a celebration of ten years of "iconic" Halo
games. Out of Halo Fest came the announcement of three new multiplayer maps for Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
. Similarly to the single player campaign, each multiplayer map will have both classic and modified, re-imagined variants. Classic mode stays as true to the original map layout as possible, whereas the latter will account for the different gameplay resulting from the Armour Abilities from Halo: Reach
, which will also be ported to this game.
The first of those three new maps is Timberland, a re-imagined multiplayer map from Halo PC
. The map is set in a classic alpine environment familiar to the Halo
Once serving as a watch point for the immense relay complex below, the monitoring outposts nestled atop this ridge became a staging ground for human forces during their time on Installation 04. Toward the end of the conflict, a Covenant assault brought the marines here to a tragic end. Timberland is a tree-covered valley, sporting undulating hills, surging rivers, and a terrain perfect for large-scale vehicle mayhem. (8 - 16 players)
The second of the new maps is Prisoner, a re-created multiplayer map from the original Halo: Combat Evolved
These spinning confinement platforms are a testament to the technological prowess of the Forerunners. In the event of a security breach, the facility’s suborbital location and frigid temperature were thought to be able to keep any threat at bay, but it appears those plans were… optimistic. Prisoner is a multi-level facility, with tightly-woven corridors and many bridges and ramps, perfect for the chaos of close-range combat. (2 - 8 players)
Finally, we have an all-new map. Installation 04 takes players back to the base of the enormous Forerunner Spire from the second mission of Halo: Combat Evolved
: "Halo". The location has now been adapted for Firefight mode.
Set on one of the many cliff sides of Alpha Halo, this beacon served as a rendezvous point for survivors of the Covenant attack on the UNSC Pillar of Autumn. These survivors, including the legendary Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, were forced to stave off numerous Covenant attacks until rescue finally came. Installation 04 is a familiar precipice studded with ancient Forerunner structures which make a perfect defensive position against an invading alien enemy and marks the first Firefight experience to include ally AI players who will defend the installation alongside you. (1 - 4 players)
This behind-the-scenes video shows gameplay from all three maps, as well as footage from Beaver Creek and Damnation. Both of these two maps had been confirmed previously, and you can check out our coverage here
. The video also discusses the upcoming Halo: Reach
title update, of which you can find more details here
If that wasn't enough gameplay for you, 343 Industries have also released a walkthrough of the sixth campaign level, "Guilty Spark", which was showcased at Gamescom and Halo Fest. In case you missed it during the footage from "Silent Cartographer"
, players can switch between the original graphics and the modern graphics at the push of a button, so that players can compare old with new at any time - a feature that 343's Executive Producer Dan Ayoub has great fun while using.
This video also mentions that the game will be receiving 3D functionality. Using a "custom made top-and-bottom 3D technology", the campaign has been rendered in stereoscopic 3D so that 3D-TV owning Halo
fans can immerse themselves into the full experience.
Finally, right at the end of the video, Dan Ayoub mentioned more footage of the terminals. As I was in a good mood I went looking for it, and here is what I managed to find:
