Halo 4's Creative Director Leaves 343

Halo 4's Creative Director Leaves 343

Forms new studio

Written by osubluejacket on 06 September 11 at 18:46

Remember that scene in National Lampoon's Animal House where a young Kevin Bacon is left to scream, "ALL IS WELL!!!" after the Deltas destroy Faber's Homecoming Parade? I'm not saying something similar is going down at 343 Industries, but Halo 4's creative director, Ryan Payton, left the company today to start a new studio, Camouflaj.

In an interview with Kotaku, Payton said:

...After a few years, there came a point where I wasn't creatively excited about the project anymore... The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different and I don't think I had built enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavor through. The specifics behind Payton's responsibilities and contributions to the in-production, second trilogy featuring Master Chief are unknown, but with a staff that's primarily composed of ex-Bungie employees, one can only hope that Halo 4 remains in good hands with 343.

While Halo 4 isn't due until Holiday 2012, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is set for a November 15th release.

Good thing to happen, an uninspired creative director can only make a boring game.

Bungie just keeps splicing itself, every time someone leaves a Bungie affiliate studio, they form their own. Soon half of the industry will be comprised of "FBE's" (Former Bungie Employees). Can't say that's necessarily a bad thing though.... laugh

I'm not understanding where everyone s getting that 343i is comprised of ex-Bungie guys....because they aren't. There's only a small number of them. Everyone else is fresh.

This guy doesn't seem at all interested in what he was in charge of, seeing as (from the sound of it) he wanted to build a "fundamentally different" Halo and wasn't given the option to. My untested faith in 343 Studios still remains strong.

Wonder how his new studio will end up preforming.

No. I don't know what the consequences of this will be but nothing bad can happen to my beloved Halo series otherwise my mind will just break down.

What's the point of even calling it Halo 4 anymore? The only similarity is the game will be in the same universe and has the master chief in, it has like 5 original bungie employees in 343 probably not even that.

You guys are applauding it, but he's worked almost a full product cycle. If he is leaving because of creative differences this only bodes poorly for the franchise. Halo Reach and ODST were the only two I can honestly say were excellent, the rest left me wanting something deeper.

This news doesn't change the way I feel about 343, I still have faith that they are going to make one hell of a game. I will be pre-ordering Halo 4 soon and I have no worries.

The one thing I am slightly concerned about is what the hell with the chief be fighting in H4? There's no covenant anymore and the flood seems all but eradicated, so what the hell is gonna happen next, and will it be a fun and exciting adventure that is worthy of continuing this beloved and cherished franchise?

Its just the opposite for most. 1, 2, and 3 were excellent, and ODST and Reach were just thrown together to make some money.

Don't get me wrong I love all Halos to death and have played wayyyyy to much of all of them, but I think as long as the core group of Ex-Bungiers stays together, Halo 4 will do famously.

And I'm not really clear what the number of Bungie employees have to do with it.

How do you know the changes he wanted weren't going to make it worse? Not saying they would, but it doesn't make sense to assume this will be worse. If you're looking for games that were similar to ODST, don't expect it from another Halo game. The majority of players thought that ODST just wasn't on par with the rest of the series, so I don't see them making another one like that. Although Reach I will agree was excellent, and I think most Halo fans would too.

Not sure how I feel about halo 4 honestly. Reach was great, and surpassed 3 in my opinion but with the number of Bungie employees dwindling I'm not sure how far they will go to hold true to the series.

You guys got it wrong, He WAS the most inspired person there and wanted to take Halo 4 into a new direction (which frankly i think the series needs). He left because he got bored and fed up with the fact he wasn't allowed and that Halo 4 is going to be exactly the same as previous titles. This is a bad thing for the genre, hopefully it won't become a copy/paste series like COD has.
