2010 World Cup and FIFA 10 Server Closures

Two more EA Sports titles getting online services cut

We don't like to be bearer of bad news, but someone has to do it. Electronic Arts have announced further server closures, this time for FIFA 10 and 2010 FIFA World Cup, effective December 6th, 2011. This includes the FIFA 10 Ultimate Team DLC as well.

The statement at the top of EA's Service Updates page explains the reasoning for server closures:

The decisions to retire older EA games are never easy. The development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. But as games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles to a level -- fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles -- where it’s no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage.

If you have further questions about your account or the shut down of these services, please visit http://support.ea.com.Unfortunately, both games contain online achievements. A lot of them, in fact. Rather than list them all, we'll direct you to each of the game's pages where you can use the flags for each of the achievements to decipher which ones require an online connection:

This kind of news is never fun, especially when achievements are involved.

Once again, servers will close for these titles December 6th, 2011.

Seeing as the online pass is supposed to help pay for servers then I guess games from FIFA 12 onwards will never have its servers closed. I'm still going to go out on a limb and predict they will.

At least their 2 years old, unlike when 2k shuts down their servers (nba 2k11). Still kinda sucks though, so everybody better be cramming for those cheevies!

Just as a quick heads up, the FIFA 10 achievements will not be unobtainable after the servers close. There is a glitch that allows you to get all of the achievements (albeit randomly) in that game, which does not require you to go online.

Small consolation though. I will miss FIFA 10 after it's closure.

EDIT: This includes the Ultimate Team DLC as well, if you have it. I know from personal experience when I accidentally triggered the glitch and got the 10 packs opened one.

I thin it's a joe, they close servers for games that a lot of people paid top price for and don't have the decency to say anything different.
