XCOM: Enemy Unknown Revealed

When 2K Marin's XCOM was outed as a first-person shooter, many of the fans who had waited so long for this title to see the light of day were quite upset. XCOM had traditionally been a strategy game, and while 2K Marin would undoubtedly put their best development-foot forward with the title, it simply wasn't what long-time fans of the series wanted.

Well, those of you disappointed in the original announcement may be happy to learn about just what Game Informer revealed today; a little title by the name of XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

Unlike XCOM, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is being developed by Firaxis Games, known primarily for their work on the Sid Meier's Civilization games. That's right, one of the most notable, current-gen strategy developers has been given the reigns to develop a more traditional XCOM title.

This doesn't mean we won't see innovation, as Firaxis president, Steve Martin explains:
It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM. We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise.
More details are set to be unveiled soon, including those about the "destructible tactical environments" and the "interaction between the real-time strategic view and the turn-based combat". What we do know for now is that XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be released this Fall.
