TA Gaming Stats - January 2012

By Dog of Thunder, 4 years ago
I almost did not go through with this post. January was a horrendous, painful month here at TA Stats HQ. No new retail games were released, the arcade games were disappointing and even the Windows Phone titles failed to set the world on fire. Looking at these charts actually fills me with rage.

I need something to reduce these dangerous levels of rage before I burst out of my clothing (not my purple pants though, those will remain intact) and destroy every retail title released since November 1st. I need something...cute....cuddly and yet highly dangerous.

Awwwwww. Such a cute widdle panda cub! With the aid of incredibly cute animal pictures I can finally tackle the most boring monthly recap since the last boring monthly recap.
This report is for the period January 1st to January 31st 2012.

Games Started
73,866 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 181,072 games between them (1,723 different games).

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim may be TrueAchievement's Game of the Year, but here at TA Stat HQ, we're sick of it.

Another game that makes me want to gag? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Thankfully, the achievement community is moving away from the latest Call of Duty, at least until the next map pack comes out. When it does, just remember who could be on the other end.

On a serious note, I believe we can wave good bye to L.A. Noire. Now that the "Complete Edition" is available, this is likely the final time we will see this game on the charts.

Fruit Ninja Kinect was a pack-in with the latest Kinect bundle. That explains the sudden rise to the top of the chart. It is the opinion of the TA Stats Committee (of One), that the sequel should instead be an adaptation of Kill Bill starring dachshunds.

For the most part, this was a disappointing month for downloadable titles. NFL Blitz barely broke 1k despite strong brand recognition while AMY suffered horrible word of mouth. Quarrel is, considering the development background of the game and how the Xbox LIVE profanity filter works against it, a small success. If I see debut numbers like these for the House Party games, I will be just as angry as if I walked into my bedroom and saw this:

Remain strong Dog, you can get through this article. Sure you're only down two charts with far too many left to go, but you can do it. You wrote an entire article in haiku once so you can handle this. I know you don't want to talk about Bug Village (WP), free phone games or recent sales. I understand and accept that about you.

Oh no, am I speaking to myself in the second person? That's just one away from referring to myself in the third person! Does that mean I'm losing my mind?

Games Completed
19,303 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 41,220 games between them (1,441 different games).

Except for you, Mass Effect 2, welcome back. Wait a minute, Mass Effect 2 is only here because gamers are trying to finish up earlier games in the series before Mass Effect 3 is released! That's not new and interesting! That always happens!

You said it cat.

GAH! Harms Way, Kinect Fun Labs, After Burner Climax!?

Oh look! A cute cat picture with a semi-witty caption! I feel better. Let's move on to the next chart.

If I ask really nicely, can we start playing something different?

Bullet Witch maybe?

All .JPEGs aside, this list is actually an interesting one. If only because it has a diverse set of achievements from all of the most popular XBLA games during the month of January. Are people more likely to only play part of an arcade game before moving on? Why is it that we tend to get great diversity in arcade titles compared to every other achievement chart?

There's a sociology project somewhere in these weekly charts.

This is me during any discussion about the Windows Phone:

How cool, the perennial top 3 genres continue battling back and forth for the top spot. You can really see the drop in available TA from Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim at this point.

Now, let's talk about what you're going to play during the month of February. You will put down Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. You will no longer answer the Call of Duty. If I have to deal with weeks of stats for the same games from November, I will kill one of these kittens.

Save a kitten, don't play Skyrim.
