TA Gaming Stats - Jan 30th to Feb 5th 2012

By Dog of Thunder, 4 years ago

That's my entire introduction so just scroll down and see new games in the retail charts.

This report is for the period January 30th to February 5th 2012.

Games Started
21,669 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 31,863 games between them (1,477 different games).

Final Fantasy XIII-2 achieved what was expected of it by claiming the top spot. Despite criticism of Final Fantasy XIII, there is no denying the niche these games fill. Along the exact same line of reasoning, SoulCalibur V fills a gap in the fighting genre by providing us with 3D weapon based combat. Each franchise is not widely loved and revered, but here they are on top for the final week of a very slow month.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection got a boost from being released in more regions. Beyond that anomaly, the chart matches all the other charts we have seen for the last two months. Enjoy them while you can, as in three weeks they will all be knocked off.

No one expected The Simpsons Arcade to have such a quick turnaround from announcement to release. That Friday release also plays havoc with the charts. How many people had no points in their accounts that first weekend and had to wait until the next week to stock up and be able to afford one of the greatest nostalgia releases in recent memory?

Bastion, TrueAchievement's 2011 XBLA Game of the Year, was on sale in honor of the award that we bestowed upon it. With over 15,000 gamers having played Bastion, it's not only the best XBLA game of 2011, it's the most popular.

Dungeon Defenders gets a special mention as I believe it is not truly represented accurately on these charts. Considering you need to have an achievement unlocked in order for TA to register a game as started, Dungeon Defenders is suffering. You do not get an achievement in that game without first finishing every stage. That is not an easy task.

Finally, at the bottom of the chart we get to Rhythm Party. Looking at the chart of people that actually started the game, I recognize a lot of names that I know are collectors and will buy titles just to have them listed as Games Played. That says everything you need to know about Rhythm Party.

Top Arcade Games Started

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (WP) races to the top with under 200 gamers. Woo. Hoo.

Sorry for the enthusiasm, I'll attempt to keep myself under control.

Top Windows Phone Games Started

Games Completed
6,053 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 8,265 games between them (1,063 different games).

NCIS aired its 200th episode last week. I thought it was going to be a clip show but it went the Community route and had a clip show of things that did not happen. I only mention this because I can not wait for people to start finishing new releases. Speaking of which, my money is on http://www.trueachievements.com/The-Darkness-II-xbox-360.htm to hold the honor of top completion next week.

The amazing thing about Mass Effect 2 reappearing? Under 10% of the people that started this game have finished it. I will not lie, that caught me off guard. I'm not one to talk considering my own completion %, but the way people talk about this series I was expecting a much larger number.

Top Retail Games Completed

The Simpsons Arcade is an interesting case. Despite being a short game it has a pair of tough achievements. Almost everyone that starts it up will get 10 out of 12 achievements in it, but far less will go for the full monty.

Iron Brigade received some DLC, which normally means a game will shoot to the top of this chart. I don't know if it was a quirk in the release schedule due to The Simpsons Game sucking up so much MSP or if Iron Brigade has simply dropped in popularity, but very few people finished the DLC.

Top Arcade Games Completed

I've got nothing for this chart. Very hard to get excited about completions during a week in which only 6,000 gamers completed even one game. Next week we get to see the results of Collapse! (WP) being on sale. You all know what that means.

Top Windows Phone Games Completed

Achievements Won
57,509 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 615,188 achievements online between them (41,229 different achievements).

I expected this to be the opposite, with a majority of Soul Calibur V achievements and only a few token Final Fantasy XIII-2 achievements.

Top Retail Achievements Won

Now for this chart, I fully expected to see a clean sweep of achievements from The Simpsons Arcade Game.

Top Arcade Achievements Won

Huh, Fragger (WP) again? I can never predict these WP charts.

Total TrueAchievements won by Genre

Bolstered by the entire Assassin's Creed franchise and the Saint's Row franchise, Action-Adventure defies my prediction and is on top. If you remember, I believed that Action would make a run for the top spot thanks to SoulCalibur V. Clearly I have overestimated that game.

As we have learned today, my clairvoyance is roughly on par with Miss Cleo. What do you think is going to happen over the next few weeks? That is prior to Mass Effect 3 of course, since that one will dominate. You watch, someone will still say Mass Effect 3 and I'll have to bop them on the nose with a rolled up newspaper.
