TA Gaming Stats - February 2012

By Dog of Thunder, 4 years ago
This report is for the period February 1st to February 29th 2012.

A short month with some surprising releases and some unsurprising results.

Games Started
71,016 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 172,874 games between them (1,728 different games).

Has anyone else noticed what has happened the last few months?

Our top games have been as follows: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and now Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. All 3 are RPGs. Is it possible that, just as Fighting games are going through a renaissance, the RPG is staging a comeback? With http://www.trueachievements.com/Mass-Effect-3-xbox-360.htm leaving a Normandy sized impact crater with its launch, we know March will also be RPG heavy.

Other then that, late January release SoulCalibur V makes a strong showing and is on my personal "Buy when funds permit" list. The Darkness II is, in my opinion at least, defying expectations.

Finally, the region specific releases of Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and Catherine (EU) cause two older games to magically reappear on the chart.

Much like the Spanish Inquisition, no one expected The Simpsons Arcade to hit the marketplace last month. We did see Gotham City Impostors coming but thanks to the strength of the Bat-man name, it managed to excel when normally XBLA third-person online multiplayer shooters fail miserably.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare has sold more in total than the two games above it, but 1,400 of those gamers came during the month of March. That still leaves Alan Wake's American Nightmare far ahead of the rest of the House Party titles. Warp did well for a quirky puzzler while http://www.trueachievements.com/Nexuiz-xbox-360.htm might as well have never existed.

How many people only bought Nexuiz because they would get 800 MSP back from buying all 4 House Party titles? Following that line of logic, how many people did NOT buy Nexuiz since it would even out the free MSP and no one wanted this game on their gamercard?

The Windows Phone is starting to get a decent library of quality titles. The majority of games on this list, from BulletAsylum (WP), Orbital (WP) and Fragger (WP), mean that my friend's list actually has people on it who are happy about playing WP titles.

Top Windows Phone Games Started

Games Completed
18,617 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 39,638 games between them (1,473 different games).

Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 are both on this chart? Wonder why that would be the case?

I recently grabbed L.A. Noire myself since it's pretty cheap now and 53,618 gamers can't be wrong. Beyond a game from May 2011 still appearing on this chart, everything else is something we've been seeing off and on for the past two months.

Top Retail Games Completed

Six Kinect Fun Labs titles out of 20 on the list? Yeesh.

The Simpsons Arcade is the only February release to place on this chart. Part of me thinks this may actually be a result of all the TA score contests taking place these days.

Top Arcade Games Completed

Collapse! (WP) watch update: 165 gamers have failed me, failed their families and made me look like a hardcore completion in comparison to their extreme failure.

Welcome back to the chart geoDefense (WP)! This game is throwing me farther down the Tower Defense Genre Leaderboard then I should be since I don't have a Windows Phone. Therefore I hate this game, despite never having played it.

Top Windows Phone Games Completed

Achievements Won
107,456 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 3,323,657 achievements online between them (52,709 different achievements).

Take a moment and look at the list of times won for each of these achievements. Now add all of those numbers up. It's alright, you can take off your shoes to help count. Isn't that a crazy number? That's only a tiny, tiny fraction of the total amount unlocked during the shortest month of the year.

You people are insane.

Top Retail Achievements Won

Top four XBLA games of the month all appearing on this chart? That means the system is working as intended.

Top Arcade Achievements Won

Every single Collapse achievement is on this list. A decent amount of BulletAsylum achievements are as well, which is cool. I imagine a mobile phone would actually make a good choice for a shmup. Seems like the kind of game you can pick up, play for a few minutes and then put it right back down.

Total TrueAchievements won by Genre

Remember when the Strategy genre was a "big thing" back in the 90's? Is there any chance at all we'll see Strategy come back like Fighting and now, RPG have?

Or is the growing Tower Defense sub-genre simply the wave of the future?
