TA Gaming Stats - March 5th to March 11th, 2012

By Rebecca Smith, 4 years ago
Due to unfortunate circumstances, Dog of Thunder can't be with us this week. That means that you're stuck with me again for what promises to be an interesting, if somewhat predictable, week of stats. Shall we get on with it?

This report is for the period March 5th to March 11th, 2012.

Games Started
26,212 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 36,470 games between them (1,481 different games).

There are no prizes for guessing which game takes the top slot in the retail category. http://www.trueachievements.com/Mass-Effect-3-xbox-360.htm did indeed leave a Normandy sized impact crater with over 13,000 gamers starting the game this week. Let's put this in perspective. If you total up all of the new gamers for the Arcade and WP charts and add those to the remaining nine games in the retail chart, Mass Effect 3 more than doubles that total.

In contrast, fellow new release Street Fighter X Tekken takes the runners up spot. The number of gamers starting that title is not a shabby number by any means, but it looks miniscule in comparison. Although it beats the first week total of new gamers for fellow fighting game Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, SoulCalibur V still had SFxT beaten significantly. Could the fuss over the on-disc DLC and lack of ability to play online with a couch co-op friend be the reason for this?

The inevitable happened. Alan Wake's American Nightmare was finally toppled from the top spot by the final House Party title, I Am Alive. As somebody who has personally been anticipating the arrival of the latter since it was originally announced as a retail title, I'm glad to see the positive reviews that the game is getting.

Dog's favourite game of all time, Harms Way, reappears in the chart for some reason. The rest of the titles should be familiar from last week.

Top Arcade Games Started

This week's new release, DoDonPachi Maximum (WP), unsurprisingly takes the top spot. The Windows Phone layout seems to lend itself to shmups, but the niche popularity of the genre means that it was never going to be a landslide victory.

A close second spot was taken by Farm Frenzy 2 (WP), which had the honour of being Deal of the Week. Sales are always good, right? People like free games more though, with those taking up five of the ten slots this week.

Games Completed
5,505 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 7,644 games between them (1,079 different games).

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim reclaims the top spot in this chart again. Mass Effect 2 takes second spot as players raced to complete the game before the release of Mass Effect 3.

SSX replaces Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on the list due to the appearance of new achievements before the release of DLC for the latter. I'm expecting Modern Warfare 3 to reappear next week as Elite subscribers get their hands on the DLC. The rest of the titles should be familiar from last week.

Top Retail Games Completed

This chart contains some surprises this week. Castle Crashers returns this week despite a lack of a sale or any real reason really to propel a three year old game back into this chart. Easy completion UNO (Xbox 360) also returns, but this is likely to be due to increased advertising on the Xbox dashboard.

As for the unsurprising, Alan Wake's American Nightmare continues to lead and I Am Alive also debuts at number four. Free games also continue to influence this chart with four appearing in the top ten.

Top Arcade Games Completed

I can't write up the stats article for Dog without taking the time to mention Collapse! (WP). The game's completion rate now sits at 92.38%, leaving 176 gamers who are yet to complete it. As the number of gamers needed to complete the game gradually increases, so does Dog's frustration at watching a 100% completion slip away.

Some of the games may have swapped places, but the titles are identical to last week. New release DoDonPachi Maximum fails to appear. Bearing in mind that only one gamer (yes, one) has managed to complete this game, this possibly has to go down as the hardest game to complete on the Windows Phone platform.

Top Windows Phone Games Completed

Achievements Won
49,202 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 760,593 achievements online between them (41,422 different achievements).

I don't think I even need to bother with explaining this chart, do I?

Top Retail Achievements Won

This one shouldn't be any surprise either. Microsoft will be pleased with the success of their House Party promotion.

Top Arcade Achievements Won

This one has more of a spread, but we only have this week's new release, this week's deal of the week and last week's leader. These charts don't really do 'surprising' do they?

Total TrueAchievements won by Genre

Dog's rhetorical question got the result that he was looking for. The rest of the genres didn't really stand a chance.

  • Role-Playing9,187,170
  • Shooter3,627,459
  • Action-Adventure3,359,335
  • Sports2,089,252
  • Action1,982,211
  • Racing785,116
  • Platformer409,068
  • Music and Rhythm350,234
  • Party279,903
  • Adventure204,889

Dog should be returning next week to resume normal duties. At least he didn't have to say anything about a franchise that he doesn't even like. Of course, that is if FIFA Street manages the pull off the incredibly unlikely and make a dent in the domination of Mass Effect 3. Oh yes, he doesn't like FIFA either...
