Who says PC versions are superior?

Written by osubluejacket on 24 March 12 at 01:22

As we draw closer to the release of CD Projekt RED's 360 version of their smash PC hit, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, they continue to pull back the curtain showing off the tasty, chewy improvements that will be doled out to console gamers... much like Samoas from the Scouts of Girl.

The following video goes behind the scenes of the new cinematics that are being added to the eagerly anticipated console edition.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is set for an April 17th release.

I am really, really very interested in this game but I just purchased Skyrim 2 weeks ago. I'm not sure if I should wait a few months and then look into it, but would it appeal to me after I've been through Skyrim? Any PC folks around here that have already played it? :)

"Who says PC versions are superior?"

Well... Sorry to disappoint you but since all of this is also coming for free on the PC version... It'll have the same content as the xbox version of the game while still being superior on the graphics side (on a decent pc of course)...

Anyway, I finished the game once on PC (I would have finished it another couple of time if a) I had the time to and b) if they stopped announcing major free updates all the time laugh . I wanted to play the game but then they announced the 2.0 version, and now the enhanced edition so I keep delaying my next playthrough).

And I must say, it's the best RPG I've played in ages. I just love pretty much everything about it.

Do not expect to play skyrim: you won't be able to roam through a huge world as you wish. The game is pretty story-driven: it's separated in 3 acts (+ a short prologue and epilogue), when you finish one of them you can't go back (but don't worry if you love doing absolutely everything in a game, it's kinda obvious when the transitions are so you don't risk missing any quests). However you've got quite a lot to do in each of these acts (and there'll be even more to do in this enhanced edition).

What you lose in freedom, you get back in quality of writing and consequences. The quests are interesting (you've still got a few "destroy x number of monster nests" and stuff, but these are very optional and usually you get them done while doing other quests), the main characters are charismatic and you get to make lots of major choices that actually affect the rest of the game (act 2 changes entirely depending on what you chose in the 1rst act). Being a sequel to a series of books (which I would also recommend, sadly not all of them have been translated in English), the background is deep and coherent. It's dark and gritty, there's gore, nudity and sex, but in a more mature way than what we're used to in video games.

I really like the combat system, the game can be quite challenging on higher difficulties (without being stupidly hard, it's not like let's say oblivion or fallout 3 on maximum difficulty where at high level enemies have millions of hit points, in The Witcher 2 most of them die pretty quickly, it requires skill to avoid/counter and you need to time your attacks rather than mindlessly bashing them) and that's a really good thing in my books.

Of course there's always an easy mode for those who just want to enjoy the story but you wouldn't be on TA if you didn't like a little challenge, would you?

Ha and the devs are absolutely awesome to their community, since the day the game was released they already provided lots of content for FREE (unlike let's say EA/Bioware headspin ), they removed all the DRMs from the boxed pc version a week after the launch (and they recently announced they wouldn't use any for their future games), they are not planning on using any kind of online pass for the xbox version...
And they listen to their community (most of what's been added to the enhanced edition was added because people asked for it).

So yeah, it's a great game made by a great studio, which is why I'm gonna buy the game a second time on xbox just to show my support toast .

Can't wait. Bought the first one on PC a while back, but my PC overheats too fast because of my environment. So I was never able to finish it. But I really loved what I was able to play from the first game.

So does one have to play the first Witcher to get full enjoyment out of this one? I've got no probs playing older games as I still play NES-PSX era games all the time). So even if it would help just a little to play the original first then I will do so.

I'd never even heard of this series until there was news about it on TA... of course I was wrapped up in FFXI and WoW for the last few years and many games sliped my radar lol. Being story driven makes me want to play this one. I was too worried it'd be like Skyrim and have too much freedom for my tastes.

You don't *have* to but I definately recommend it. It's an 'old' game but it feels and looks fantastic smile

You won't regret it.
