PAX Round-up 5: Hell Yeah! WotDR

By Michelle Balsan, 4 years ago
We all know Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit looked good – and outrageous – when we saw the first screens and received our first bit of information about this game a couple months ago. Of course, the reasonable follow up question is always ‘does it play well?’ and the answer, thus far, is a resounding yes.

Hell Yeah! is billed as a Metroidvania style title and that much is absolutely true, but the platforming elements will totally win you over. This is always an important part of these games, but the fluidity of the animation and responsiveness of the controls are top notch. Throughout the game you’ll have to kill certain enemies to fill out your monster index and open up doors to other portions of the world map. What’s really fun about Hell Yeah! is that each of these enemies is finished off by a little button pressing mini-game. I didn’t have the time to experiment with what would happen if you didn’t perform the mini-game properly, but they were brief moments of fun and led to unique death sequences that were eye-popping (sometimes literally).

I was fortunate enough to get a few minutes to speak with Arkedo Studios' head Camille Guermonprez about Hell Yeah!'s development and he informed me that it had been in progress for about 17 months. He shopped the game around to several publishers and it was SEGA who was brave enough to pick up the ball. It may be fairly early, but if the bit I got to play was any indication, I really hope people will reward the developer and the publisher and pick this one up.
