You may be aware of a little development company called Double Fine - headed by an amiable chap named Tim Schafer. He got his start in the 90s working at LucasArts under a man called Ron Gilbert and together they made some very successful games such as the Monkey Island
series (re-released on XLBA as http://www.trueachievements.com/Monkey-Island-SE-xbox-3....htm
and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
Double Fine had a bit of a rocky road in recent years, with games such as Psychonauts
and Brutal Legend
having a pretty shaky development process and relatively poor sales, but being critically lauded and becoming cult favourites. They've had more success recently thanks to some well-received and successful XBLA and Kinect games, including http://www.trueachievements.com/Costume-Quest-xbox-360.htm
Oh, and there was that small thing in the last few months where they asked for some community backing for a new old-school point-and-click adventure game through Kickstarter. They asked for $400,000, they got over $3 million...
Well, Double Fine have now just announced their newest game will be http://www.trueachievements.com/The-Cave-xbox-360.htm
, a subterranean 2D adventure game straight from the mind of Tim's old boss, Ron Gilbert. This isn't the Kickstarter game - which is in early develeopment and is so far only coming to Steam, Android and iOS - this is a game they've been working on since before that little occurance.
To go with the announcement, we also get a trailer:
The game's publishers, SEGA, had the following to say about the product of their partnership with the legendary developers:
If you enjoy rappelling, spelunking and dark rocky caverns then be prepared to be disappointed! And then intrigued. And then AMAZED. And then disappointed again, but only for a minute. Then relieved, amused, bewildered, excited and satisfied. In that order. Your first clue that The Cave is a place like no other will come just after you assemble your team of three unlikely adventurers—each with their own unique personalities and skills—and stumble across a subterranean amusement park and a medieval castle, not to mention a fully armed and ready-to-launch nuclear-tipped ICBM.
Asked for a quote, The Cave said, “There are those who say I’m not rooting for everyone who ventures down here but that’s not true. Not true at all.” He then followed up with “But I’m also not above a good chuckle when someone falls in lava.” The Cave then began to chuckle
Thank you to all the community members who delved into the cave of knowledge and suggested this story.
Prepare your spelunking gear for The Cave
on XBLA sometime in early 2013.
