Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 to Get Launch 'DLC'

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 to Get Launch 'DLC'

Necessary action due to risk of German ban. Read on for details.

Written by litepink on 07 June 12 at 02:13

A "dismemberment" feature set to be including in the retail build of Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 has been removed, and will instead be made available as launch DLC, reported Joystiq. The game originally was to have the ability to dismember enemies with well-placed shots, as evidenced in a recent set of screenshots.

Why would City Interactive do such a thing? It's not a scheme to make money, since the DLC will be free, and it won't be a form of an online pass or anything either. The answer is simply to avoid the risk of a ban in Germany, where overly violent games are often censored or banned. This way, the game can release worldwide, and the violent dismemberment feature can be released at launch everywhere but Germany. This means everyone wins, as dismembering enemies will still be possible, and as a consolation, Germans can still play the game. I guess those without an internet connection lose out, but the percentage of these people are likely small among our readership.

Again, the dismemberment DLC will be available at launch for free when the game arrives on August 21st.

Really Germany? I would have thought Australia. Lol

But this sucks. People without Xbox live will lose out on content they should have gotten, and sure, this is just a small thing, but the fact that countries are insisting upon censoring games but not any other form of medium nowadays is criminal. Violent movies are fine, violent YouTube videos are fine, violent anything is fine as long as its not video games. I despise it.

But at least they found a fair solution to the problem. Unless you don't have xbox live.

How hard is it to read the article before commenting?

It really sucks that German censorship is the way it is. It's nonsensical, due to one man (well, and his followers) it is now a nanny state, where any violence - regardless of whether it is "pretend" - is immediately shunned by the government. I speak to a lot of Germans and not one of them has said "Yes, I agree with the governments decision". I help them out on Steam by gifting non-cut versions of games, none of them have turned into psychopaths.

.This DLC solution is ok, but really, the German government needs to come to its senses so that German gamers can enjoy the same content as the rest of us.

Clever, but the German government is being idiotic.

Australia has typically just outright banned the games in the past rather than bother with censorship. How ever Australia is now reintroducing the M rating or whatever their equivalant is.

Censorship actually benefits those of us who don't mind playing games again to double up on achievements. The changes required to bring the games in line with local legislation often mean the game.coding is changed giving us extra achievements.

In reference to my previous post, this is why there a quite a few (Ger Ver) games available but only one specific (Aus Ver). The games typically being banned in Australia means they don't generally get as far s code altering content cuts.

That said I can see the sense in this and can see it becoming common practice as i really dont think the costs involved in manufacturing multiple versions of the game for such minor edits is generally very cost effective.

As for the guy passing steam codes onto the Germans he should probably be careful of that as the people receiving the games could well be breaking the law. Actually you could well be doing yourself.

Use a non German tag, download the content then play as normal on the German tag. Though considering the reasons this isn't available in Germany I would expect it to be fully region locked so that neither German accounts or consoles based in Germany could actually access it.

DakotaThrice said:As for the guy passing steam codes onto the Germans he should probably be careful of that as the people receiving the games could well be breaking the law. Actually you could well be doing yourself. It's a function of Steam. Nowhere does it say "You may not gift games to your German friends!". If it is wrong, it's on Valve, not me. Also, I believe most of the games are "indexed" which means they cannot be advertised or placed on store shelves, but it is still legal to own/buy them (if you're over 18). Since Steam cannot verify the age of those buying the games, they play it safe and only put low violence versions up, or they do not put the game on the German marketplace at all.

I'm not worried.
