Australia's Ban On Mature Games Lifted

Australia's Ban On Mature Games Lifted

R18 and higher are finally allowed

Gamers of Australia rejoice! After several years of debate, indecision and, let's face it, a tiny bit of stubborn attitude, Federal Parliament has now added R18+ to the video game classification system. In the past, games that had been classified as R18+ in other places around the world had to be heavily censored to fit the MA15+ rating, which was the highest in Australia. Games like Left 4 Dead 2 were modified to the point that they were practically a different game, in terms of effects at least. Here is an old video to give you an example of the version of Left 4 Dead 2 that Australia has versus the version that everyone else has.

Pretty different, right? Not to condone or encourage violence or anything, but technically the Aussies were getting jipped out of quite a few things in the game. Not anymore, though. Now, every game that receives an R18+ rating in the UK and the rest of Europe will be available to gamers in Australia, unedited, unmodified, kept pure, however you want to say it. To quote Senator Brandis of Australia:

The passage of this bill will no doubt be welcomed by adult gamers all across Australia. The industry has been waiting for this change for some time.I'm sure there are plenty of Australian gamers right here on TA, let alone the rest of the internet, who would no doubt agree with that statement wholeheartedly.

Let the celebrations commence!

Wonderful news - and great to see politicians actually treating gamers with some respect and recognising that we are more than a bunch of 15 year old kids that can't actually handle violence (or make intelligent choices about the games we purchase and play).

Great work and kudos to everyone who lobbied politicians and Parliament to get the law changed.

And to the hardline Christian idiots who opposed the change - well, I have no words ...

PS - Though its small news compared to the earthquake we just had here in Melbourne.
osubluejacket - I'm almost 20 hours into Dark Souls and am getting bored. I don't think I have the patience for it.

This is (obviously) fantastic news for adult gamers in Australia.

I only hope that publishers will release a significant back-catalogue of previously-banned titles to them!

I imagine it would be much easier (and cheaper) to buy those games through online import.

Wow, it seems like so long ago since I played L4D. Though heavy violence in games isn't always necessary it's nice to see that the Australians will not miss out on the games which do have lots of gore etc.

The next double rape homicide committed will be branded "just like GTA" by the Australian media, I bet it'll be reinforced before long. Politicians are imbeciles.

I'm a proud Aussie and the reality is this doesn't really effect me. I import all my games and then I don't have to deal with censors and grossly inflated prices. I think most American and UK gamers would shudder at the amount we have to pay. The Aussie dollar is doing stronger than the US yet we pay $99 when game hits shelves. Don't even get me started on MSP prices or xbox live prices

Old man on street told me that the reason this law was put in place in the first place was because Austr-aliens descended from violent pickpockets in Victoria London.

Everyone needs good neighbours.
