Kinect PlayFit Dashboard App Released In US

Kinect PlayFit Dashboard App Released In US

Coming to other territories later this week!

Written by KeithBGray on 10 July 12 at 20:50

The Xbox Dashboard re-design, which was introduced before the turn of the year has seen apps, apps, and more apps make an appearance on the "biggest interactive TV service in the world".

Do you feel that all those TV apps have encouraged you to become a couch potato over the last six months or so? Well, enough of that, as Microsoft has now released an app to counteract all that laziness! Kinect PlayFit is a brand-new, fitness-orientated dashboard update aimed at getting you and your family even more involved in Kinect titles such as Kinect Sports and Dance Central.

Chuck Frizelle, Executive Producer for Kinect PlayFit summarises the overall objective of the new app:
The goal of the app is to motivate families to get off the couch and reward them for having fun... We’re trying to show that Kinect is not only fun but healthy for you, too... Ultimately, Kinect PlayFit is a motivational tool. We want to motivate people to change their behavior and be more active

The above screenshots show that the new app will pretty much be a stand-alone dashboard. Players will be able to view their daily, weekly, monthly, and overall calorie burn totals across a dozen Kinect titles at release. Microsoft has also confirmed that more titles will be added to the list in the future.

What's more, the inclusion of leaderboard functionality will also allow gamers to see how they shape up against their friends, as well as other gamers in a global comparison.

I decided to leave the best bit of news until last. The Kinect PlayFit has 20 achievements attached to it! Microsoft certainly is learning the way to our hearts. Four of those achievements can be seen in another screenshot, below.

The Kinect PlayFit has been released today in the US, and can be downloaded for free. Gamers elsewhere can expect the download to be available later this week.

A big thanks goes to all the community members who suggested this story.

Should be exciting ... but does that mean I have to put my Kinect games on my card?

A calorie tracker over all games is a nice move and it looks better than the present dashboard too.

For people wondering, the app only seems to support calorie burning in the following games:

Big League Sports
Dance Central 2
Deepak Chopra's Leela
Kinect: Disneyland® Adventures
Kinect Sports: Season Two
Kinect Star Wars
Let's Cheer
Nike+ Kinect Training
Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster
Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012

So a relatively limited list. Who knows if they'll expand it to other currently available games later.

EDIT: Also no word on whether or not calories already burned will count towards achievements. I kinda doubt it.

The supported games list is quite small though, hopefully they look at adding more soon.

So right now, only 11 games are supported. You can only gain these app achievements while playing in the following 11 games.

Big League Sports
Deepak Chopra's Leela
Let's Cheer!
Dance Central 2

Kinect Fun Labs: Junk Fu
Kinect: Disneyland Adventures

Kinect Star Wars
http://www.trueachievements.com/Your-Shape-FE-2012-xbox....htm

I'm hoping the add A LOT more games over time then just this selection.

EDIT: LOL ninja'ed by seconds by almost exactly the same post. smile

This is kind of funny. MS are pushing this to try and convince people that kinect games actually give you a workout, thus hopefully convincing some people to buy a kinect to get in shape or something. Oh that's grand.

Take it from someone who has taken fitness and dietary management classes: you aren't burning nearly anything with kinect and you would be better off taking a jog around the block instead. If you still chug mountain dew and eat cheetos while you game don't fool yourself. Getting a better body is 75% diet, 25% workout, and kinect simply cannot give you any kind of decent workout.

Well it does add calories already burned from played games. HOWEVER, for me it only did so for Disneyland. Not Kinect Sport Two. Unsure why.
