Hybrid Developer Diary

It's 5th Cell's experimentation

Written by SgtDigglesworth on 01 August 12 at 00:15

Developer 5th Cell, who are known for Scribblenauts, is bringing some experimental heat to the Xbox LIVE Summer of Arcade with their jetpack-fueled, third person shooter, Hybrid. This 60fps, global hotzone multiplayer shooter allows for full character customization, faction-based, team-focused gameplay, and what is shaping up to be some pretty intense combat. The trailer below will dive deeper into what fans can expect from 5th Cell's shooter and the war that is raging over the highly sought after dark matter.

Hybrid will also feature microtransactions. Microtransactions are usually found within free-to-play games, in which the gamer can either play for an extended period of time and unlock boosts or armor, or with microtransactions you can purchase XP boosts, weapons, perks and so forth directly from the in-game menu immediately. As you progress throughout the game, you will earn credits to spend on upgrades and loadouts, however you will also have the option to purchase credit packages for a certain fee and apply the content right away to your character. Other XBLA games that have used microtransactions before are Crimson Alliance and Gotham City Impostors.

Get ready to strap on a jetpack and battle through the hotzones, as Hybrid is set to release on August 8th for 1200 MSP from the Xbox LIVE Arcade.

I deleted Gotham City Impostors last weekend because it has become impossible locally for me to find a game (New Zealand) due to the match making. I can see exactly the same thing happening with Hybrid so I'll pass. Might stay alive if you're based in US or Europe, physically near the limited server pool I guess.

I love the idea of a meta-game, but honestly I can't see this one being a massive success either as it looks like 'just another sci-fi FPS' (despite the developer's claims). Does anybody still play GCI or Monday Night Combat?

Micro payments are also a terrible idea. I have zero interest in spending MSP in-game, for a game I've already purchased with MSP. Never exercised this feature in GCI either.

Don't have problems finding matches in GCI in the U.S. or MNC.

Unlike GCI you can earn these credits ingame.

Interesting concept...instead of "free to play" and banking on revenue, they chose to go 1200msp and then milk some more! So people who cheat Bing rewards will be all powerful, I guess.

Game looks interesting, and I will try the demo, but "online only" XBLA games have a bad habit of dying quick.
Killer Punks...all that needs to be said.

Spent about 5 minutes playing the beta before realizing it's complete garbage.

Think of it as this promotion's Nexuiz.

This year is kinda disappointing for me, I don't care about any of the games that are on Summer of Arcade.

This makes me sad. I was hoping for a game with the day-to-day interaction of Endwar on maps, where you and some friends could try and change the balance of maps by winning repeatedly in certain areas, while having tight gameplay. What about it made you think it was bad?

Everything about this game was terrible in the beta. The movement within the game as well as the aiming system are garbage. Matching up with friends was a pain and the map you are talking about is hard to understand and so you just end up clicking around until it finally starts searching for a match. Unless this game recieves a major overhaul before release no dice for me.

Yeap. Sometimes I wish I lived in mainland USA. GCI is simply an excellent game and was one of my favourites when it came out, just the local player pool seems to have dried up and blown away. I'm sure it's just to do with the way XBLA does match making (I believe it tries to find 'close' players based on ping times), and probably NZ's crappy internet connection to the US (one undersea cable controlled by a monopoly).
