Major Nelson explains how to take security measures

Written by SgtDigglesworth on 02 August 12 at 23:31

As many of you know, we previously revealed details regarding the new Xbox LIVE Security Measures that have been put in-place in order to maintain the integrity and security of each gamer associated with Xbox LIVE. To accompany these changes, Xbox LIVE and Major Nelson have released more information and a detailed video tutorial describing what are known as 'proofs'.

'Proofs' are security measures gamers attributed to their account when you first created it. They range from security questions, alternate email addresses, or your cell phone number, in which the latter two were used to send a code to that verified that you were the actual owner/user of the account. With the update to security measures gamers can now utilize a secure computer and eventually, your Xbox 360 console to verify that you are the rightful owner to the account. They have also taken measures to ensure that gamers who maybe don't have access to the email or cell number they originally associated with their account, can now manage and add the new relevant information. It must also be noted, that upon deleting or adding information to the account, that it will take 30-days in order for the request to process. Here is the video to help explain in more detail.

If you have any further questions or issues with applying changes to your account, head over to http://www.xbox.com/proofs, and search for the contact information that best suits your needs.

I guess I'll do this, but honestly it's pretty fucked up that it has to come to this.

Whoops, didn't mean to delete it. I dislike the 30 day waiting period because that means that, if hacked, I have to depend on Xbox support to not be garbage. And...well. Yeah.

So I'm assuming the 30 days is because if someone gets your account info and takes out your cell phone number and adds theirs, then you find out your account is hacked 2 days later your cell number would still be there which means the account is yours.

I had someone try to steal my account 2 weeks ago but luckily I was able to change my password and re-download my profile to my xbox before they changed or purchased anything. It pissed me off immensely though. I am beyond careful with my passwords and email addresses that I associate with my xbox and somehow people still found a way to access it. I am glad they are taking it more seriously but somewhere there is a serious information management problem that needs to be addressed on Microsoft's part, regardless of what they say regarding phishing schemes.

Yeah.I faced this last night when I wanted to remove the auto-renewal, and they wanted me to verify my account, which I did, yet it was an older email, that somehow linked me to an older GT. So after updating the new security, I then had to call support to have them remove the auto-renewal. I just changed everything and that's when I realised it was a 30 day wait period, during which time you will not be able to remove existing information (ie. credit card) until a) LIVE subscription expires and b) your changes take effect. Also, I ran into an issue where I wanted to delete the old email, however since it is an alternate and I have a subscription and points it won't allow me to delete that information, even from Windows LIve. The tech support was handled well, although he had no idea why I was facing said issues, until I reminded him of the new security measures. Just a heads up if anyone runs into this issue smile

He added an email and used it to recover the password a few times until I finally convinced Xbox support to investigate it. It just puts 30 days on the deletion, it still let's them change shit. He changed her address and email, motto, bio, etc etc. Which is why I said you have to depend on Xbox support, and they aren't good.

It doesn't matter what kind of improvements xbox makes, there are always going to be people who whine and complain and say it's not good enough. I'm glad they are trying to make things better, and are taking steps to ensure our personal information.

When I changed my email and phone number earlier, it stated that it will take place a month from the date that I applied the change, as well as a month for the deletion of the alternate email.

I had a very good talk with a Microsoft Xbox Live associate about WindowsLive ID issues, I just wish the probationary 30 day holds werent in place, but I understand why. No complaints about beefing up security here, in fact I wish it was almost neccisary to signin via WindowsLive every time you want to access XboxLive, yes its gonna take you two extra minutes to play GoW, Halo, or god forbit a CoD but its almost that neccisary

This service is a flaming pile of BS. The day they implimented it I lost the ability to buy MSP from xbox.com. The dam website keeps tellingme I'm not using a "trusted computer" and tells me to go on one that I trust... I'm on the same goddom computer! I also contacted MS support about it and the tech gave up after throwing 3 preloaded responses at me. The 30 wait period is a joke. It's not like the auto text service works either.
