The Curse Of The One Point Achievement

The Curse Of The One Point Achievement

Is it really worth it?

Written by Kirsco on 30 October 09 at 03:30

Bullet Witch has one, FIFA 09 has one, Forza Motorsport 2 has three of them and now, DJ Hero has one as well. The one point achievement, ruining the round numbers on the end of gamer scores since 2006.

One thing that DJ Hero has done right that the others haven't is to make the achievement itself something fairly insignificant. All you need to do is to complete your first "mix" outside of the tutorial mode. In comparison, Bullet Witch expects you to beat all stages in HELL mode, FIFA 09 gives you one point for playing for fifty hours and Forza's three achievements involve collecting all the cars from certain regions. If I played a game for fifty hours and received a measly one point, I'd probably cry. Not because I only got one point, but because I'd been playing a sports game for 50 hours!

Granted all of these games do have a subsequent achievement to make up the remaining four points to round off your score again, but there's always a chance of the achievement being out of your reach. As an example, Bullet Witch has an achievement worth 99 points for playing the game for 15 hours. Taking a look at the numbers, it appears as though around 4,000 TA members played this game through to the end at least once. Around 300 received the 1 point achievement and around 700 of you played for 15 hours or more for 99 points. I played Bullet Witch, but turned it off after about 15 minutes to prevent myself from eating my own eyeballs. There's no possible way I could have made it to 15 hours, although I wouldn't have played on HELL mode either, so perhaps it's a moot point.

Finishing one mix in DJ Hero sounds easy enough, but the remaining four points sound a bit more involved. The achievement requires you to receive at least four stars on the hard difficulty. For those of us who play rhythm games, this might sound easy, but remember, this is a whole new controller and is going to take some getting used to before you can rock out as flawlessly as you would with your plastic guitar. You never know, you may decide after just one song that the game is absolutely abhorrent and take it back to the store for a trade in, then you'll be stuck with a one on the end of your gamer score for ever!

Are you guys as anal as I am about seeing either a zero or a five on the end of your score? Or does every little point count?

Here's a pretty comprehensive list, btw: Achievements With Odd Points

For me it's the fact that it's almost a standard that achievement values come in multiple of fives. When they don't, it's just odd.

I think so, I think the 0 point ones are hurt more I understand the need to put the 0g achievement COD 5, prestige once and 10 times, but for it not to be counted towards the TrueAchievement score hurts more, i know 0 x Anything = 0 but its does take time

Odd numbered chees-mints don't bother me, it's the 0 pointers I can't stand, my COD WaW is not complete because I can't be bothered to push myself for those 2 0 point cheese-mints but now if they were worth 1 point each I would have prestiged 10 times by now instead of being 3/4 toward the first prestige.

I hate to admit I had a teensy bit of fun playing through Bullet Witch on Easy. I have the game (got it very cheaply, I assure you) and would like to have more than 250/1000 on the game. I guess I must be anal about my gamerscore because I've resisted playing the game for fear that somewhere during my next playthrough or two I'd end up with 15 hours and 99G - and I know sure as hell I'm not gonna play through HELL mode.

Would it ruin my life if I had a weird number on my gamerscore? No. But I can prevent it and so I have thus far. Since I own 80 or so games, it's gonna take a long while before I'm bored enough to go back to Bullet Witch and try for more completion.

I really like seeing a zero or a five at the end of my gamerscore. Just seems natural. Any other numbers just bothers me.

@Ethical Sin. Bulletwitch is actually really easy on all difficult modes including Hell as long as you have your HP/MP and Gattling Gunrod maxed to level 3 (which you should have already done before starting Chaos mode anyhow). I'm currently halfway through my 10th and final playthrough of Bulletwitch for 2k (JP and US version). I still love the game. Its so poorly designed, yet fun to play.

I use to make sure my gamerscore ended in a 5 or 0, and avoid playing games if I didn't think I could end it on 0 or 5. Now, I don't think it would bother me because 1. I pay more attention to my TA score then my gamerscore now, and that's random pretty much if its odd or even( I know its not, but there is no way to guarantee it either way) and 2. I'm use to seeing it odd and even from my TA so I wouldn't really mind if my gamerscore was odd.

I don't care about odd gamescores. Besides that DJ Hero is a blast. Only 8 more achievements to go! I'm more worried about finding someone locally who owns the game. Most of my friends have PS3s and don't get anything on the 360 any more.

If you're used to rhythm games, DJ Hero isn't that hard. I'm already playing on Expert and 5*ing most songs. Couple 4*s in there, but it's nothing that I don't think I can do.

I usually avoid playing games that'll change from gamerscore from being a multiple of 5. If it does change, I make it a point to try "evening" out the gamerscore so it either ends with a 5 or 0 again. I've done this for UMK3, Marathon: Durandal, and The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai.

Since TA score is almost never rounded to 5's or 0's I'm not bothered with the not-rounded gamerscore anymore
We said, we said, we said, this time was gonna be different!

My numbers have been goofed since I have only 4 of the 5 Ridge Racer 6 achievements that are 7 points a piece. As much as I would love to round that number out and get the last one, the game totally kicked my ass last time I tried to play it (I hate the Final Route... you think you are good at a game and you push as hard as you can, then BAM! they show you that you ain't jack) and I haven't touched it since... Maybe if I get ambitious enough to start trying to put my head through that wall (turns out I have to get VERY aggressive if I want to win, and I don't do aggressive, otherwise I fail) I'll pull it off, but as of right now, it isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Odd number achievements don't bother me at all, but only 1 point for beating Infinite Undiscovery's final boss on the hardest mode is just mean.

yea but seriously dj hero.... if u cant get a 4 star on one of the beginning songs on atleast hard than its kinda pointless to keep the game... its not that hard to get the 4 point acheivement so its not just one
