I wouldn't mind the ability to disable "friends coming online" notifications specifically. Receiving messages, party invites, and achievement notifications would be fine.

As much I might end up joking about the 1,000 friend's limit, it is a "better" thing. No one is forcing anyone to actually have 1,000 xbox friends at the end of the day.
