How the Dreamcast is better than Next Gen
By now you’re probably thinking that I’m a lunatic or some kind of a troll. Yes I’m a lunatic but I am certainly not a troll. I despise trolls and they should just rot in hell. Thanks for ruining online gaming douche bags! Any way back to the point I have both the PS4 and the Xbox One and I am not impressed. Most of the features that the developers have said is complete bull shit. 60 frames per second, my arse, 1080p, COD runs at 720p on Xbox One.
Because I was so disappointed by all this I decided to play on old consoles because of the memories and games were more unique back then. I played the SNES and had a great time. Played the PS1 and had a nostalgic weekend but then I played the Dreamcast and that’s where it blew my freaking mind!
Despite the console’s short lifespan it had revolutionary hardware. Not many people know about this console because the PS2 was on its way and no one gave a shit about Sega. But a few of us still remember and we were blessed. We saw something in that console that no other console had ever accomplished.
The devs kept their promises and made an awesome system that had every game run at 60 frames per second which is something that most games fail to accomplish. It also had amazing graphics for its time and some games still look great by today’s standards like Dead or Alive 2, F355 Challenge and of course Sonic Adventure 2. You can also thank this beast of a console for bringing online gaming to home consoles. You’re probably thinking “Man that’s bull shit! The Xbox invented online”. Well sorry to say bud but you’re wrong. Sure the online wasn’t all that stable, but you can say the same about the current gen and even the next gen consoles. Didn’t you read about the Xbox One Day One problems?
Any way my point being is that this console died without a proper burial. When it died no one knew. The console just simply washed away and that’s the most upsetting thing. When my Dad told me that the Dreamcast doesn’t exist anymore, I was in tears. Nothing could fill the void. I played Crash Bandicoot for hours on end and I was still sobbing over the fact that the Dreamcast will never see the light of day. But then something happened.
Since that the console was a cult hit, a small percentage of indie developers are still making games. Sure there are old consoles receiving the same treatment but this is special. For a console with a small fan base it just so happens that a few of these fans are brilliant indie developers. The latest game I know is a game called Sturmwind which is a 2D Sidescroller shoot’em up. It plays like any other 2D sidescrolling shoot’em up so it’s nothing revolutionary compared to other games like Sonic Adventure and Rayman 2 but the game is still bloody good fun and graphically it looks amazing despite some cheap designs.
What also amazes me about this game is that it has achievements and a freaking leaderboard. Now you’re probably thinking “So! Current gen does the same thing and you expect us to give a crap?” Well maybe you should because The Dreamcast didn’t have achievements and only a few games on the system had a leaderboard.
Let’s talk about the online experience. Playing online on the system wasn’t the best thing in the world. Most matches would be laggy and it would be hard to find a decent match. But if you had a fast enough internet speed, which was something that only rich people could afford back then, you would get a smooth and an enjoyable experience. There weren’t many games that supported online play but there was one game in particular that started it all, Quake 3. Quake 3 was freaking awesome! It had great modes, great graphics, fantastic gameplay and of course the best multiplayer experience you could get. The game is still being played today and is now called Quake Live which is something you should check out because it is still fun even after all these years.
Another online game that deserves praise is Phantasy Star which was an MMO. You read that right a FREAKING MMO! Back then this was some serious shit! Gamers spent hours on this game and it turns out that there are still a decent amount of private servers for the game. I never got the chance to play this game because I was too young and weren’t interested but now I want to pick up a copy and play this impressive game.
Any way if I had to wrap it up in a nutshell I just have to say that the console still amazes me where is the PS4 and Xbox One doesn’t. It is just a shame that Sega stopped making consoles because if they were, we will be seeing some truly impressive technology.
By now you’re probably thinking that I’m a major fan boy and to be honest I guess I am but if you played this console then you would be feeling the same way. Trust me this console is the best thing that has ever happened in my life and I thank Sega for bringing us some of the most fun us gamers have ever experienced.
