3. Story walkthrough
OK, you've adjusted the brightness, right? Let's start a new game on Hard.
Chapter 1: Host
There is a cut scene explaining the plot: your brother Cal is infected with something, but doesn't seem to behave like a zombie. Funny, that. He escapes, so now you'll spend the whole game tracking him down.
You gain control of your character, but you are defenseless and the building is on fire. Luckily the levels are super linear. As you go along you'll find a machete and then some Vietnamese guy tries to choke you. Defeat the QTE to earn:
Pick up the machete he drops to get 1/11 of Fire for Effect. Keep going through the rooms and find the first firearm of the game, the VC pistol. You now have 2/11 of:
Don't worry about the US pistol as you start several levels with this weapon, giving you 3/11 of Fire for Effect.
Keep going. You'll learn about grenades, flashlight, etc. At one point you are following this guy running away from some gas. It will kill you if you stay in it for too long, so keep close to the soldier you are following. In this level you will also find an AK-47 and an M-16, so pick them up and now you are at 4/11 and 5/11 of Fire for Effect. These 4 guns are the most common in the game, so no worries if you miss one. Take down 3 soldiers with the pistol without reloading to get:
You'll also try out a turret. Notice how enemy soldiers duck down behind explosive barrels. Wow, they are smart! Finish the level to earn:

Chapter 2: Quarantine
Somebody shoots a rocket into the jeep you were riding. Doh! And your gun has mysteriously vanished. Doh, Doh! Your buddy just ditched you to go find reinforcements. DOH! Whatever. There on the ground is my favorite weapon of the game, an American Carbine. 20 round clips, pull the trigger once and it shoots once. But it does good damage and has good zoom and seems to get headshots way more often than other weapons. For some reason, however, this weapon does not seem to count for the Fire for Effect achievement. Don't let that stop you from grabbing it, though. Kill some soldiers around here, pick up their bolt action rifle, drop it and grab your Carbine again. Now you are at 6/11 of Fire for Effect. Also, bullets come in only 2 types: pistol and main weapon, so every bullet is usable in the carbine as well as the AK-47 and even the shotgun. Neat trick!
This level is linear, and you might as well go for:
Just kill 5 soldiers with the AK-47 and M-16 weapons without reloading.
After crossing a wooden suspension bridge, you will come to a seemingly dead end with a sandbag barrier in front of you. Head left and up a small hill. Up here you will find the first rocket launcher (7/11 of Fire for Effect) of the game, along with several RPG rounds to go along with it. Grab the rocket launcher and load up. Look over the top of the small hill you are on back toward the bridge. Wait for 4 or 5 Viet Cong to group up in the middle of the bridge and unload an RPG on them to unlock:
After a while, a Viet Cong enemy will shoot an RPG at the sandbag barrier to your left. You will automatically look at it when it happens. This is your clue to get out of dodge, as the enemies here will just keep respawning infinitely. Head through the newly destroyed barrier and follow the other soldiers into the building ahead. Finish in a church with waves of soldiers coming after you. When they are all dead, you hear zombies outside! Luckily there is an escape tunnel that the cowardly soldier opens for you. At the end of Chapter 2. You'll earn:
Chapter 3: Infection
Keep going through the tunnels and you'll see your first set of zombies, Jane Fonda, and her agent. Well, some movie starlet anyway. About midway through this level, you will reach the command center in the trenches along with Jane and some other GI's. The command center has four entrances, and you are about to be attacked. Look for the big radio console thing in the corner with the green and red lights and crouch down behind the knocked over table next to it. This is, by far, the best spot to survive this section. Viet Cong will pour in through all four entrances for several minutes. Let your teammates do most of the work so you can conserve ammo. Once you have survived long enough, you'll get a checkpoint. Follow Jane further down the trenches. At the very end of the trenches section (right after a QTE with an infected), you'll come to a wide open area in the trenches with some American GI's and a lot of Viet Cong up top ringing the open area. Stay in the narrow trench where you entered and pick off the enemies up top. When they're all dead head straight across this area into a small side tunnel that curves off to the left. In here, on the ground, you will find a revolver. Pick it up for 8/11 of Fire for Effect. Easy enough level, at this point you'll probably get:
Finish the level on a boat with the lame movie starlet's agent (Oh yeah, she died. Doh.)
Chapter 4: Refuge
OK, the boat crashes. There is an annoying QTE at the beginning on a bridge. Even though the button pushes may be flashing like it wants you to pound on the button, don't. Just hit it once, because there is a second one you need to get and it will fail if you are pounding on it.
This jungle area has a lot of traps. After a fire fight, you'll be warned about land mines. Luckily, they are very obvious. Whip out the pistol and shoot any that are in your path. Immediately after the landmines end, there a some traps that are hard to see. Instead of taking the obvious path, cut through the more leafy areas and you should avoid the traps. You'll make it to a mansion that is crawling with zombies. Wow, this feels like a trap! It is! There are some shotguns in the mansion. Pick one up for 9/11 of Fire for Effect. The shotgun is your best friend for killing infected as it's quite easy to get headshots with it, so hang on to it. In a back room, past a cut scene with Trang, there is a revolver on a table - grab it! It does good damage. Make your way back to the first room of the mansion. Before going into this sort of hexagonal shaped room, you are going to want to trade your precious shotgun for an M-16 or an AK-47. The shotgun is not much help for the upcoming boss.
Uh-oh. The door closed behind you! There is some guy in a hood with two machetes and he looks tough!
What you need to do here is unload a full clip, or as much of one as possible, into his head as he is coming toward you. When he gets close, reload as you sprint (LB) to the other side of the room. You need to hug the walls as much as possible when running from him because he has a very long reach and does a ton of damage. Two hits will most likely kill you. When you get to the other side of the room, unload on his head again and then run. There are ammo boxes scattered around this room, but don't pick them up until you need them. It takes a LOT of bullets to put this guy down. If your health gets too low, stop shooting him and just focus on staying away from him until your health regenerates, then go to town on him again. Once he's toast, go down to the basement where there are some more annoying fights, because the zombies will gang up on you, as well as spawn behind you. Just move forward cautiously and a little at a time. Once you spawn some infected, back up a little, take them out, and then move forward a little more until you spawn more infected. Just take it slow, don't rush, and you'll be fine. You will find some grenades down here that will make your life a lot easier, as well. You'll probably get the dismemberment achievement on this level:

Chapter 5: Trip
At the very beginning of this level, you are going to encounter one of the more frustrating sections of this game. Follow some GI's a short way down the trail to a ruined building, or temple, or whatever that has a mounted .50 cal machine gun out front. Don't even bother with it. Enter the ruined building, turn to face the machine gun, and look for a broken section of wall to the left of it. Crouch down behind this section of wall and you'll be safe from the hordes of VC that are about to attack you. Your fellow GI's will die rather quickly, so stay behind the wall and face the entrance where you came in. Pick off any VC that attempt to enter, and after a few minutes some reinforcements, and a checkpoint, will arrive. This is your cue to leave. Exit the building the way you came in and just sprint past the VC outside, following the uphill trail to your right. The whole area will now be covered with gas, making your vision blurry, but it won't damage you so don't worry. Shortly after the trail curves to the right there will be a VC in the bushes to the right of the trail. Pop a cap in him and move on. Just past him, you will see a couple sections of broken wall on either side of the trail. Sprint to the right one and put your back to it. Look back down hill and kill any VC that followed you up. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't. After checking, face back up hill and peek around the wall to pick off the 3 or 4 VC coming downhill to get you. Once they are dead, advance uphill until a mounted machine gun and some more VC start shooting at you. At this point, just sprint for the door of the temple straight ahead to get a cut scene. The enemies here spawn infinitely, so there is no point trying to fight them. It will probably take you a few tries to get through this part, but just be patient and keep at it. Inside the temple, you'll fall through the floor to some caverns down below.
At one point, you will exit the caverns under the temple and have to drop of a small cliff. Be sure to shoot all the infected down below from your safe haven on top of the cliff before dropping down. Make your way around and re-enter another section of caverns.
After some more temple slogging, and zombie killing, you'll make it to a rescue chopper. Oh no! Your buddy Griffin got bit! He's infected! You liked him, right? Oh yeah, and the movie agent dies on this level too. Yeah! No one liked him.
Chapter 6: Hunted
Well, Griffin causes the chopper to crash. The pilot takes off, leaving you alone again and mysteriously without a weapon! Luckily, there is an M-60 heavy machinegun right in front of you. Grab it! 100 bullets in the clip! Woo! You are now 10/11 of Fire for Effect.
Don't try to get the 15 kills-with-one-clip achievement here on Hard difficulty. Do it on your second playthrough. Wait until you've exited the swampy area and have to help some GI's defend an area. You will be attacked here by over 20 VC and can quickly get this achievement here on easy difficulty. This first part of the chapter is moderately challenging as a lot of the zombies will do the jump attack on you. You'll fight against zombie Griffin a couple times, I guess he's the one who's hunting you.
About midway through the level (just after helping the GI's defend the area), you'll enter a wide open area with another temple in the center of it. This is another one of those "survive until help arrives" areas. Hang on to your M-60. There are grenades and ammo scattered around the area. It's also lousy with infected and VC, so kill everything that isn't you. As soon as the GI's blow open the entrance at the far end of the area, it's time to leave.
As you finish the chapter, oh no! Remember Trang? He got you! You'll be castrated for sure!
Chapter 7: Captured
Well, Trang takes you to a torture camp. He wants to know where your brother is. He's a zombie by now, so why not tell him? No? I guess you'll just have to survive torture then. OK that really wasn't too hard. And of course, the zombies break in on Trang's fun. This time there is a perfectly good reason why you don't have a weapon. Doh! Luckily there is an American soldier nailed to the wall. Run to him and take the machete sticking in his belly. Trade shots with the zombie, you'll almost be dead because the machete is so whimpy, but finally the zombie dies. Phew! Alternatively, just turn to the right and climb the ladder that's right there to escape without injury.
Either way - Argh, this Vietnamese guy is trying to kill me! Snap his neck. There is a knife on the table. It's better than the machete. There are 2 doors here, one has half a platoon of Viet Cong covering it, so go out the other door and into a house where 2 soldiers are sleeping. Knife them before they get up. On the table here is the silenced pistol. Woohoo! You just got:
This level is probably the most difficult, but it's still not too terrible. You break out of the torture camp and make it to an open area. There are some traps around here, so watch your step. QTE as a truck barrels by. Oops, that's a dead end now because there is no way to squeeze around that truck. Head right from the crashed trucks to find a tunnel entrance, but the Viet Cong, instead of shooting a rocket at you, shoot the rocks and trap you in there. Darn.
Make your way through the caves until you drop down into an area with some water. You'll be in a kind of alcove in the cliff wall, so just stay there for a while. The GI's up top will do most of the work for you. Kill any infected that get through with your rifle butt to conserve ammo. You will need it shortly. Once all the infected are dead, move forward toward the red flare at the far end of the cave, where more infected will spawn. Sprint back to your alcove and let the GI's deal with them for you. Move back to the other end of the cave and locate the curving ramp going up and to the right.
Now, here is the tricky part. Your sprint will not last long enough to get you to the top, and tons of infected will spawn both in front of, and behind you, once you start up the ramp. Move up the ramp at normal speed, blasting away all the while with your machine gun, until you feel you're about to be overwhelmed. At this point, sprint for your life toward the red flare at the top of the ramp. It's on a small overhang on the right side at the top. Just stick to the right lip of the cliff and you can't miss it. Again, this section may take you several attempts to get through, so just be patient and keep trying. When you hit the flare you'll get a cutscene. End of Chapter.
Chapter 8: Payback!
So now you have a vendetta on Trang. Whatever. The Special Ops guys give you a pistol. They are a bunch of jerks, though, because at one point they lock you in a room with a bunch of Viet Cong to test how tough you are. Duh, you just saw me wipe out about 100 zombies!
Fight through this level and eventually do a 'beat down' on Trang. Also, Zombie Griffin gets killed. I got 3 achievements at the end of this chapter:
Chapter 9: Evac
You are flown back to HQ but the place has been overrun. You will be forced to use a shotgun for a while, but this will be your best choice until near the end of the level, so stick with it. Eventually, near the end of the level, you'll reach a temple area with stairs going up to the right and down to the left. Right is some ammo, left is a lot of infected. Grab the ammo and make good use of it to kill all the infected. Downstairs where the infected were, you'll find an M-16. Leave it there for now. We'll be coming back for it momentarily. Head in and to the right. Go downstairs and lay waste to all the infected down here with your shotgun, but don't climb the ladder at the end yet. First we want to go back and get that M-16, so....go do that. Come back down here and climb a few ladders to find a very small room and another Resident Evil dual-machete man. You want to use the same strategy as before, but it's a bit more difficult now because the room is so small. Just take your time. If you get damaged, just focus on staying away until you regenerate and then go back to shooting machete man in the head some more. Also, do not enter the small corridor on the far side of the room. First, because machete man can trap you in there, and second, because if you go in there another regular infected will spawn, which is trouble that you don't need right now. When machete man is dead, enter the small corridor and kill the regular infected, or not, and climb the ladder. Wow that level was easy...
Chapter 10: Whiteknight
OK, you've been hearing the whole game about Whiteknight, who is actually a Vietnamese-French colonial who started this whole zombie thing and changed your brother into something.....zombie-ish. Early in this level you will see the 20-shot carbine again. Grab it! Don't trade it for anything else until I say so, because...well, just trust me. Apply the following advice throughout this entire level: Advance slowly until some enemies spawn. Back up and kill them. Advance slowly a little more until some enemies spawn. Back up and kill them. Advance....you get the idea. Anyway, follow the jungle trail to yet another temple, or whatever. A short ways in, you'll come down some stairs to a large open area. many waves of infected will spawn here, so please follow the previous advice, so as not to be overwhelmed. There is a heavy machine gun in this area, but resist the temptation to pick it up. The carbine will be much more helpful for what's coming. Fight your way down a path with several straggling zombies. Easy. Finally you see, yes, another temple with a box of ammo sitting out front. Get the ammo, so now you should have 20 bullets in your gun and 90 in your pocket. Enter the temple. QTE! Now you're trapped in the temple! And a whole butt-load of zombies are coming for you!
Stay calm, stay at the entrance, use grenades efficiently and focus on headshots, headshots, headshots. Luckily, most of the zombies are the slow kind, so don't freak out. If some get in close, just spam the B button and take them out with your trusty rifle butt. You may also notice that there is a heavy machinegun on a little island in the center of the area. Again, resist the temptation to run over and grab it. You'll need it for something else in a minute or two. Once the first wave are all dead move forward SLOWLY and you'll trigger the next wave. Run back to your position at the entrance and methodically kill them all. Keep doing this until you can advance to the little island in the center of the area without triggering any more waves of infected. If you haven't gotten a checkpoint by now, there are probably one or two infected stuck behind a wall or something. Hunt them down until the checkpoint pops. Once they are dead, the door to the last area will open. Before you go in, grab the heavy machine gun in the middle of the temple and reload to 100. This will be the easiest boss fight ever!
Oh no! Resident Evil guy again. Heavy machine gun makes short work of this loser. Awwww... And now you see your brother and Whiteknight and you have to shoot one of them. Game over.
It gives you the choice of watching the credits. It has Freebird!
OK, start the game on the Easy difficulty. The one that you will have to be careful about is:
So you can't let a zombie kill you. Well, on easy, it is very hard to get killed, but if you manage to get killed by an infected quickly dashboard out before the continue screen and restart the game. This way the death will not count against you. Keep in mind that you CAN be killed by a VC or by a non-infected QTE and still get this achievement. This shouldn't happen too often. OK, let's get started.
Chapter 1: Let's kick out a few achievements here. Hold onto that machete and use it exclusively on the first 10 or so guys. This should unlock:
Now switch to the pistol. Don't bother picking up any other guns except the pistol and at the end of the chapter you'll get:
Blast through the game, making sure not to get killed by zombies, until you get to Chapter 6. This chapter starts you out with the heavy machine gun. Remember, wait until you're out of the swampy area and helping the GI's defend against a VC attack. Reload before the attack starts and don't reload again until the achievement pops! If you don't get the "Cook Off" achievement here, you can either restart the checkpoint, or wait until Chapter 10. Might as well do it here so you don't have to worry about it in Chapter 10.
OK, keep going. Wow this is so easy! You completed the game without dying at all! Well, maybe a QTE did you in, but that's OK because you got:
