3. Story walkthrough
Before you actually start the game, there is something important to note: there is an achievement which needs you to finish the game in a certain time, but sadly there are some achievements that will make it impossible to stay under that time. Therefore whenever I tell you to save, do it and reload the save if you want to be sure to make it in record time. Otherwise, you will have to play through the game once more. Also, never use a hint, this is also an achievement!
Upon entering the scene, you will see a guy standing at the fire. Press the back button to change to retro view and sack your first achievement.
Continue playing to unlock this secret achievement. (Secret)
Talk to the guy a little bit and head off to start your adventure.
PART 1 : The 3 Trials
Walk all the way to the right and enter the "Scumm Bar." Talk to the 2 pirates at the entrance and advance to the right in the next part. Talk to the 3 pirates. Say "I want to become a pirate" and ask them about the 3 challenges in detail. After that, stand close to the chimney and wait for the cook to leave the kitchen and get inside. Grab the hunk of meat, the pot underneath it, and the fish outside (need to step 3 times on the loose plank and get the fish before the bird reappears). After the cutscene, leave the tavern and continue to the right. In the next screen, towards the left, talk to the suspicious looking guy and to the pirates (who are even more to the left). Now go to the cliff where you started at, leave it through the upper exit and enter the circus on the map. Enter the tent, talk to the guys, and offer to use the canon. Put on your helmet/pot by giving the pot to them and sack in your reward. Walk back to the village, go to the suspicious guy, and buy his card. Exit through the left and walk into the small alleyway to the right of the church. Leave and enter the prison to the left of the church and talk to the prisoner. Enter the shop to the right of the church and if the shopkeeper isn't there, take the sword, the shovel, and then ring the bell on the counter and buy them both (also buy the breath mint). Back at the prison, give Otis the mint and then talk to him until the sheriff shows up and leave to the map. Now move to the "fork" (left of the circus), walk up the path, and pick up the plants. Head back to the church plaza and off to the left to the estate. Combine the flower with the ham and feed it to the dogs (nap time!). Enter the mansion, enter the door next to the vase, and continue through the conversations that will occur. After this, leave the mansion, give Otis (the guy in jail) the gopher repellent, and exchange it for the cake. Check the cake for the file, enter the mansion again, and go through the hole. A cutscene occurs and before you move to the exit, SAVE! This is really important! Now, get outside. After the cutscene, you'll be thrown into the water. Now wait until you're dead due to drowning and sack another achievement for that.
Reload your save, pick up the idol and the sword, and get out of the water. After the cutscene, go to the map and go to the destination "Lights" on the right. Give the troll your red herring and go on to the house. Knock on the door, pay the price for the instructor, and learn sword fighting. After that, save IMMEDIATELY and KEEP that save! This is important!! Now you need to collect every single insult and the corresponding answer. Here is a complete list of the insults and answers. You have to run across the map and encounter some random pirates. Now fight them. It's a 3 round swordfight. Your enemy needs to use the insults on you and you need to fail them to get the right answer! There are no penalties for lost battles, so don't worry about that. The following is the insults the pirates may be used and the correct answer you should respond with the following (note: also below the answers are the Sword Master Insults that are used with each answer. These are used in a later fight):
- Insult: This is the end for you, you gutter-crawling cur!
- Answer: And I've got a little tip for you, get the point?
- SMI: I've got a long sharp lesson for you to learn today
- Insult: Soon you'll be wearing my sword like a shish kebab
- Answer: First you better stop it waving like a feather duster!
- SMI: My tongue is sharper than any sword
- Insult: My handkerchief will wipe up your blood
- Answer: So you got that job as janitor after all
- SMI: My name is feared in every dirty corner of this island
- Insult: People fall at my feet when they see me coming
- Answer: Even before they smell your breath?
- SMI: My wisest enemies run away at the first sight of me
- SMI: I usually see people like you passed out on tavern floors
- Insult: Once I owned a dog that was smarter than you
- Answer: He must've taught you everything you know
- SMI: Only once have I met such a coward
- Insult: You make me want to puke
- Answer: You make me think somebody already did
- SMI: If your brother's like you, better to marry a pig
- Insult: Nobody has ever drawn blood from me, and nobody ever will
- Answer: You run that fast?
- SMI: No one will ever catch me fighting as badly as you do
- Insult: You fight like a dairy farmer
- Answer: How appropriate, you fight like a cow
- SMI: I will milk every drop of blood from your body
- Insult: I got this scar on my face during a mighty struggle
- Answer: I hope now you've learned picking your nose
- SMI: My last fight ended with my hands covered in blood
- Insult: Have you stopped wearing diapers yet?
- Answer: Why, did you want to borrow one?
- SMI: I hope you have a boat ready for a quick escape
- Insult: I've heard you were a contemptible sneak
- Answer: Too bad no one's ever heard of you at all
- SMI: My sword is famous all over the Caribbean
- Insult: You're no match for my brains, you poor fool
- Answer: I'd be in real trouble if you ever used them
- SMI: I've got the courage and skill of a master swordsman
- Insult: You have the manners of a beggar
- Answer: I wanted to make sure you feel comfortable with me
- SMI: Every word you say to me is stupid
- Insult: I'm not going to take your insolence sitting down!
- Answer: Your hemorrhoids are flaring up again, eh?
- SMI: You are a pain in the backside, sir!
- Insult: There are no words of how disgusting you are
- Answer: Yes there are. You just never learned them
- SMI: There are no clever moves that can help you now
- Insult: I've spoken with apes more polite than you
- Answer: I'm glad to hear you attended your family reunion
- SMI: Now I know what filth and stupidity really are
Upon getting the last insult with the corresponding answer, you will get an achievement for that.
Now reload the previous save and fight until one guy mentions that you are good enough to fight the sword master. Now go to the "fork" again, up into the woods, up at the yellow flower, to the right on the next screen, right at the red flower, left on the next screen, up on the next and you should be at a signpost. Use PULL on the sign to activate the bridge, talk to the swordmaster, and beat her (make sure you save beforehand! Use the list above for the insult/answers once again, but since you haven't learned all of this insults after restarting from your last save, not all of them will appear. If the fight seems like it is taking too long, just restart from your last save and try again since the insults are all random). Sack your T-Shirt, get to the beginning of the fork and read the "map". Remember the first word and follow the directions to find the buried treasure (back, left, right, left, right, back, right, left, back). Read the signpost and dig up the treasure. Now get back in town, watch the cutscene, and enter the tavern. Talk to the cook and pick up all the mugs you can find. Enter the kitchen (save here!), use the mug on the keg with grog and run as fast as you can to the prison! Combine the now melting mug with a fresh mug to keep the liquid and use the grog on the prisoners cell. Free him and talk to him. Enter the shop now and talk to the shopkeeper for some credit and say you have a job. Watch him carefully for the password combination on the safe, ask him for the swordmaster again, and then open the safe (you have to pull and push to make different movements of the handle, save before doing it!) with the combination to get the credit paper. Now enter the next area to your right and to your right is a door to a shop. Pick up the chicken on the crate and talk to the woman. Now get to the map again and move all the way up to the North to the "shore". Use the chicken on the railing above and make your way across. Talk to the guy and face the horror behind the door (new crewmember for you!). Now go to the swordmaster and convince her as well to join you. Get to the southeast on your map, the location called "Lights". Talk to him until he shows you the sea monkey, offer 5000, and say you leave. Now talk about extras and decline everything until he gives in for 5000. Get back to the city, wait for the cutscene to finish, and board the ship. Part 1 is done and you get an achievement for that.
PART 2 : The Journey
Go to your quarters, pick up the feather pen and ink, open the drawer to your left, and look at the book (also in your inventory). Open the cabinet to your right, get outside up the crows nest, and get the flag. Now get down the latch and go down once more to the belly of the ship. Grab the wine out of the chest, take gunpowder from the chest, and get down the other set of stairs. Pick up the pot and a box of cereal (use it in inventory and the toy price as well to get a key). Head back to your quarters and open the cabinet with the key. Take the chest and all its contents and head to the kitchen. Put the following into the pot: breath mints, chicken, fine wine, cereal, jolly roger, ink, cinnamon sticks and gun powder. After the cutscene, get to the belly of the ship and pick up the rope and gunpowder. Get to the kitchen and use the map on the fire to get fire. Get on deck, combine the rope with the cannon, gunpowder with the nozzle, fire on the fuse and board the cannon (dont forget your helmet!). Congrats on mastering Part 2 and you get another achievement here!
PART 3 : Under Monkey Island
Upon starting the chapter, save! We will now focus on collecting all the memos scattered around Monkey Island. As soon as we are done, we reload this save and play once more to the next point when I tell you to save. You also will have to find them all before you enter the Monkey Head, otherwise you will have to reload AND do this whole thing again! Here is a list where to find them all:
- South of the Fort on the map, on the beach - From the cannibals to Herman (there is also a note on the first beach you land, it's optional to obtain that one!)
- In the vicinity of the ancient rock firing device before you use it - from Herman to the cannibals
- Close to the ancient rock firing device after using it
- Near the dam you have to blow up - from the cannibals to LeChuck
- At the pond where you find the body and the rope - from LeChuck to the cannibals
- Beach closest to the Monkey Head clearing, inside a bottle - to Herman from his attorneys
- At the beach closest to the Cannibal Village - from Herman to the cannibals
- Inside the cannibal's hut - from the cannibals to LeChuck
Now after finding the last one, an achievement will unlock.
After reloading, get out of the sand and pick up the banana (ignore all of the notes to make it go a little faster!). Walk to the jungle, walk all the way to the north, then west, and then to the fort (it's North of the flooded volcano, you can't see it so point your cursor over it). Pick up the rope and the spyglass, push the cannon (small cutscene), and pick up some gunpowder and the cannonball. Get back East and to the "River Fork." Pick up the stone to the left, walk north up the foothold, and save your game here! Keep that save. We will need it after we are done with the game!! Walk further north and look at the heap of rocks (cutscene). Get down and pull the catapult 2 times. Now get up again, push the rock off the slope, and watch how the banana tree gets hit. Get all the way down, open the spyglass, and use gunpowder on the dam and the lens on the sun. Get to the map, go to the "Pond" on the East and pick up the rope. On the map to the south to the "Crack", use the ropes, and climb all the way down to pick up the oars. Get to the starting beach and pick up the bananas and use the oars on the boat. Make your way to the East, then to the north, and enter the beach to the East. Enter the Jungle and get to the Village. Pick up the banana from the bowl of fruits and get captured (don't show the the idol yet!) by the cannibals (save now on a different save file!). Escape the hut through the hole, exit the village, and enter it once more. You get captured again by showing the wrong item to them and they fortify the door to make it harder to escape. Rinse and repeat fleeing and getting captured 5 times and you will get another achievement.
Reload your save, get to the location of the "Ape", just north of the beach you started at, and wait for him to come down and hand him all the bananas you have. Now make your way North, then East on the "Clearing". Head all the way to the right (the ape will now open the gate for you, but you must pull the nose of the left totem), get to the Monkey Head, pick up the wimpy little idol, and get back to the cannibals. Show it to them and convince them to help you (hand them the leaflet and get the head). Enter the prison hut, get the banana collector, and give it to the old guy outside. Now get back to the Monkey Head where you got the idol from, use the monkey key on the right ear and enter the head. Now for this part, use the head, but save often to find the fastest way. I dont know if it's the same way every time, so simply follow the directions the head shows you. Upon reaching LeChuck's ship, use the necklace to get invisible and enter the ship. Get to the left and use the magnetic compass on the keys. Now walk to the hatch to the right, the go further to the right, and pick up a feather from the ghost chicken. Get back to the sleeping ghost and use the feather on his bare feet to get the bottle of grog. Back in the room with the chicken, get down the latch with the key and use the grog on the dish there. Use the cooking pot to get spoiled, get up on deck and use the food on the creaking door. Get the ghost tools near the sleeping guard, get back to the chicken room, and use the tools on the glowing box to get the things inside. Get off the ship, go to the cave, and another cutscene occurs. Get out of town for another cutscene and finish the chapter.
PART 4 : Guybrush Kicks Butt
Now we are back on Melee Island. Get to the right to the church and use following options: "Could I offer you some root beer" and then use the bottle on Specter. Now enter the church, choose "Stop this wedding" and then "I've come to stop you marrying the governor." You will get beaten up and land at Stan's. Pick up the root beer, use it on LeChuck, watch the cutscenes and credits and you finished the game. Now on to the achievements!
First, you will get the achievement for finishing the last chapter.
Another one for finishing the game without using any hints.
And lastly you will get one for finishing the game in under 3 hours (if you saved often and properly, it takes around 2:20)
Now you will have noticed that you are still missing one achievement. Remember the one save I told to keep on Monkey Island BEFORE using the catapult? Now reload that one, DON'T move the ancient device and sink the sea monkey (yeah, your own ship). Breeze through the game and watch a different ending, and the final achievement will unlock. If you didnt keep the save, shame on you, since you will have to play the whole game again!
I also found a neat little video walkthrough for those that like a video over a written guide. Credit goes to adventuregamefan8.
Congratulations on finishing The Secret of Monkey Island!
