We have all probably played at least one of the many Cabela games, most of which are mainly based on hunting with minimal story. Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai has more story to it than others and hunting is not your primary function, the purpose of Cabela's Survival is to survive.

There is a lot of killing to be done in Cabelas, which is a good thing becuase thats what we expect from a any Cabelas game. Most of the time the animals you kill are attacking you and you are just trying to get from point A to point B. Other than the oppurtunity to kill plenty of animals this title does not offer much.

When you are traveling the majority of the time you will be climbing mountains so you can get to your destination. The route you go is linear so you dont have to worry about getting lost. Each level has several collectables in them but they are generally hard to miss. Some are just ammo pickups while other will unlock additional levels in shooting gallery mode.

Speaking of shooting gallery, this mode is a rail shooter, it is fun to play but the target is sensitivity which makes aiming to be somewhat difficult. Again they dropped the ball by not making the sensitivity adjustable. Shooting gallery does have the option for local multiplayer, which is a nice addition. Even though there is no online multiplayer it would have been nice to have leaderboards so you can rate your scores against other people on XBOX live.

The controls are hard to get use to, the camera is in a third person overhead mode but the shooting is a rail shooter. When your trying to manuever against your attackers I found it difficult to shoot accurately. The button sceme is just aweful, you use the LB button for almost everything, The worst thing about it is you use the LB button to climb and jump, there were plenty of time I would want to jump and he would climb and visa versa. The real problem is that you do not have the ability to change the control sceme.

Throughout the game there are several things that do not make sense to me. The biggest issue is when your climbing a mountain you will get attacked by flocks of birds. I am not much of outdoorsman but it felt random to get attacked by birds just because your climbing a mountain. The thing I found most entertaining is when your on land you guy jumps what looks like inches but when your scaling a mountain he jumps like he is spider-man.

The achievements are not to bad, the story mode only takes a couple hours. I beat it on hard difficuty and only died once or twice. Most of the story related achievements will come with natural play. The only achievements that will pose a problem are the shooting gallery ones but they seem easy enough to get once you get use to the movement of the target.

At the end of the day I would not recommend the game unless your looking for an relatively easy completion or if you have a love of hunting. For me there is nothing fun about this game, the main story is like a violent version of Man vs. Wild. I find the controls to be a major annoyance killing any real chance at a pleasureful gaming experience. I am going to be generous and give it three stars because the shooting gallery has the potential to be fun and becuase Cabela did not let up on the killing just because it is a survival game.
