First, you should work towards all single player achievements (all tournaments on medium/higher difficulties) to get your seed up to 10-5. After that, it's very difficult to get higher in single player. Take a second controller and win duels to easily get up to #1.
Nath360skillzYeah this is pretty much what I did. Multiplayer split-screen races.
I personally raced on the first track (Andalucia, Spain) as you can get a bike round the track between 43 and 50 seconds depending on how good you are at the game. This means you can then get your second controller round the track at about 1:30.

What I did though was race with my first controller but placed the second controller under my right forearm (so it was pressing up on the right thumbstick and accelerating on the second controller). This meant I could get both bikes round in 1 minute 15.
Also be sure not to accidentally finish first with the second controller as I did once, as this will cause your seed to have +0.30 or something added to it.
