I am really sorry but Rockstar has been patching everything. I suggest boosting this achievement through a session on trueachievements. My method was just a little easier to do and required less hassle
This means step 5 and 6 don't work anymore and have been replaced

My original method:
~~It's even easier to get with 1 friend.~~ --> You need 4 people incl yourself

1) Set any two seater-landvehicle (so bicycles excluded) race to Rally type.
2) Have the others prefer the driver role. And prefer yourself to be the co-driver.
3) start the race without anyone else joining (by setting the lobby system to closed)
4)You can direct the driver by using left and right on the d-pad. The driver cannot see the checkpoints (hence the purpose of the rally race)
5) Have the driver quit the session, by switching to a single player character with down on the d-pad. Making you be the only person left on the "Job"
6) Achievement will unlock when it says "WINNER"
5) Win the race and the co-driver will unlock the achievement

Extra info: even if you prefer certain roles it might not always assign you to them. So this might take a few tries

Nice one, this was the last win I needed for Numero Uno but no one seems to be doing rally. Helped me and my buddy get the Backseat Driver and Numero Uno achievements.

Tried this solution today and it didn't work, just sent both players straight back to freeroam. Didn't downvote you, just a heads up this may have been patched out.

This worked for my buddy last night when we did it but not for me. if anyone wants to try send a msg. I no matter what have been in the driver seat.

I tried this earlier and it wouldn't work, as soon as the driver left the game just ended and went back to the main map. any ideas why? I tried it with me being the host and my mate being host but done it both times.

Works perfect. Drive 1 round and then the driver changes into singleplayer via dpad down and choose for example trevor

Ok I just got this we were quitting using the phone just done it using the D pad and changing to trevor and it worked first time. Many thanks for your help.

Worked like a charm. I took out my headset just in case so to see if that'll work and it did. So if anyone is having trouble with it just take your headset out and use the directional pad and it should work cause it worked for me.

Just wanted to say that your method worked just as described. For those having trouble, make sure the host is the one going for the achievement (co-driver). As long as the driver quits by switching to a single-player character, the achievement should pop up no problem.

Yea we switched hosts as well and still no luck. I see people saying it works as of the 8th. When was the new patch (1.07)?

I can confirm that you can also unlock this achievement if the other racers leave the race and only you remain with the driver. This happened to me today, I did a rally race at the containers/port area (near the airport, at the south of the map) with 5 other random people, (so 3 cars) and those 4 people didn't know what to do, so after 1 minute, they left the race, leaving only me with my driver.

I helped him with the d-pad around the track and checkpoints and when we finished both laps, I got the achievement because I was the co-driver. As long as you remain in the race and finish 1st (and be the co-driver of course), you can get the achievement :).

As of 1/21, I can't get this to unlock with update 1.09. I also tried it about three weeks ago (update 1.08) and it still didn't work. We are using the Criminal Records track. My friend (the driver) has tried quitting to single player from the menu and with the character wheel. He has also tried to find a new session. I've directed him around 4 or 5 turns before he quits. I (the co-driver) haven't done a thing.

It doesn't even get to Winner. When he leaves, it does that overhead view thing then puts me back into free roam. We've both tried to be the host.

We've also tried to actually complete the race. Nothing.

I'm only changing:
Race Type to Rally
Laps to 5 (default)
Preferred Player is the person I'm playing with
My Preferred Role is Co-Driver
He sets his preferred role to Driver

Does anything else need to be changed? Does it not work on Criminal Records now, despite people saying it does? Is he not quitting quick enough?

I've tried these "easy" solutions on TA, TrueTrophies AND PS3T.org and nothing. Both x360a and PS3Trophies.com didn't list this particular solution (they listed doing it legitimately with four players). Even searched the x360a and PS3T forums and there have been no updates.

Does the vehicle type matter, or anything else?

We live in the same town, and even though we have different internet providers, connection is not an issue. With any game we play online, we have never had problems connecting to each other and staying connected. We've unlocked other GTA Online achievements together (as recently as both nights we attempted this one), so I am certain that is not the issue.

It may have been patched, but until others speak up, I'm going to assume it still works. There has been nothing in the Rockstar patch notes even remotely mentioning this, and with 1.09, I don't think this would have been patched since 99% of that patch had to do with actual cheaters (not that this isn't really cheating, but that patch was specifically to take care of GTA$ and RP modders/hackers).

i tried to do this with 1 friend too (i was the driver and he the co-driver), when i selected single player, i left the session and he left it too and no achievement for him.

We both used v1.09

Locality has nothing to do with it. As I said, we have had no problems unlocking other GTA Online or any other achievements together for any other games since 2006 on the Xbox 360. It's a non-issue. It's not that. Believe me, we're not amateurs.

I was the host both dates I went for this achievement. We actually tried it both ways. Nothing.

I think that you should mention in your solution that you have to be the host to unlock this achievement... and update is to say that this might not work on Criminal Records...

Also, you don't mention if this has to be done in a private or public session. We've been trying it in private sessions, but from what all the guides and forum posts have said on other sites, all "online" achievements can be done in private. I guess we can try this in public.

Last night I tried with my friend again, both public and private matches. We tried about 7 or 8 times total. We tried on four different races. We tried with him as the host and me quitting as the driver, me as the host with him quitting as the driver, me as the host with me quitting as the driver and him as the host with him quitting as the driver. We tried to quit using all three methods (character wheel, finding another session and quitting to single player). We tried 1 lap, 5 laps, 10 laps and 99 laps. We tried five different types of vehicles, custom vehicles on and off, different types of day, etc. Nothing. And yes, we were playing a Rally race.

Since I'm only Rank 11, this is the last online achievement that I can possibly get without ranking up any more (which I have no desire to do). Either I'm going to set up a session for this or just say the hell with it. I've already put too much time in an achievement that's only worth 10 gamerscore...

When we first attempted this achievement at the beginning of January with 1.08, we played through the entire race instead of quitting. We did it both ways, me as both the driver and co-driver. Since there was no one else, we obviously won every time, but since it wasn't four players, it won't count towards "Numero Uno" anyway.

I don't even care about that achievement for winning every game mode since I'm not a high enough rank to unlock it anyway, and have no desire to reach Rank 18 to even attempt to unlock it. GTA Online is unfun to me. I really have no desire to ever play online in this game again. Hell, I've only done like 5 missions in single player.

This game is just that boring to me. I've played all GTA's from GTA III up and I estimate that I only completed about 25% of each of the previous games.

I'm really not a big fan of sandbox games, yet I loved Red Dead Redemption, Crackdown and Crackdown 2 and thought L.A. Noire was good. I've got The Saboteur in my backlog that I'll probably like more than GTA V.

small side note...if players drop mid race it will still unlock, however you have to start the race with at least 4 people (2 vehicles), if they drop before the race actually starts (eg. vehicle select screen or betting screen) it will start normally but achievement will not unlock at the end, well didn't for me anyway
