3. Story walkthrough
Adventures of Captain Smiley #23
You start the game with Gerda calling you, informing you that someone is robbing the local bank. Gerda has also been tied up in the bank. When Captain Smiley gets to the bank, Gerda tells you that it is a trap and that Dr. Winklemeyer is going to blow up the bank with both of you inside.
When you are in control of Captain Smiley, move to the right, defeating each of Winklemeyer’s Orderlies using the X button. Three attacks should defeat each enemy. If you have enemies to both the left and right, you can use the A button to knock both back. This attack causes no damage, but gives you a little more time and space to plan your attacks.
Once you reach the window to the very right, there will be a small cut-scene and Captain Smiley is face-to-face with Dr. Winklemeyer. Brad also appears for the first time in this cut-scene in his Bradcopter. Once the cut-scene is finished, you gain control once more. For most parts of the game, Captain Smiley has the ability to shoot using his two guns. Aim using the Right Stick, and Shoot by holding down RT. Aim to shoot non-stop throughout the entire game for the “Violence Solves Everything” achievement. It should be noted that Captain Smiley can now jump using A.
Destroy 25 of Brad's BradBots.
Destroy 25 Bradbots to unlock the “Neural Net Processors” achievement. Each Bradbot only takes a few shots to destroy. Aim to kill each one you encounter if possible. Also watch our for the Bradbots with guns and dynamite. Some Bradbots will grab you if they get close enough, reducing Captain Smiley’s health. Rapidly press A or X to defeat them.
You will soon reach a section where Captain Smiley uses a Bradbot to slide down the side of a building before jumping through a window. Here, you will see the first Reaction Sequence of the game. There are three in the entire game. You must complete each reaction sequence without making any mistakes for the “Eugene's Protégé” achievement. Press the correct buttons as they appear on screen to complete the reaction sequence.
Half way through the level, Captain Smiley will face Brad. Continually shoot the Bradcopter to reduce its health (shown at the top right of the screen). You should also shoot the missiles, jumping them when they get too close. In certain sections, Captain Smiley will be unable to shoot. Hide behind the AC units, pressing RT to wave to ensure the incoming missiles hits them. When the Bradcopter drops a rope, grab onto it and climb up. Destroy the Bradbots on the floor, before shooting the Bradcopter once more. The Bradcopter’s health will eventually be reduced to 0. Continue to the right to continue the level.
As you work your way through the level, killing dozens of Bradbots, you will learn that pressing down and holding A (or LT) will make Captain Smiley slide. Use this to avoid some shots. At the end of the construction section, you will enter into another cut-scene as Dr. Winklemeyer attempts to jump onto Brad’s Bradcopter. Captain Smiley gets to him first however, and both are sent free-falling. Shoot the Bradbots before they reach you. Before long you will reach another cut-scene. Captain Smiley stops the comic, complaining about the recent events. He and Star begin to argue, before Star starts making silly noises.
Let your feelings guide you.
Press X to punch Star a minimum of 15 times for the “Shut Star Up” achievement. The following video then shows the demise of Captain Smiley Comics.
Nanoc The Obliviator #285
Once you return to the base, talk to Gerda, who will explain that The Adventures of Captain Smiley has been cancelled. If Captain Smiley is to appear in his own comic again, he will have to guest star in other comics from various genres. The first is Nanoc The Obliviator. To start all of the comics from this point onwards, you must go to the Comic Jump in the Launch Room, all the way to the right of the Base.
Captain Smiley and Star will begin in Nerthus talking to Nordya, who informs you that Nanoc needs rescuing. Once you regain control, you will walk forward a little before entering into another cut-scene, where you will meet and kill an innocent golf fan. Continue a little further and Gerda will inform you that Twisted Pixel have given you a “Help Me” super item, which destroys all enemies on screen. Press the Y button to use it, but only when you absolutely feel it is necessary. Extra “Help Me” super items can be purchased from Dr. Winklemeyer in the base.
Defeat the enemies as per usual. Be aware of the Vultures from above. You will also meet a mini-boss, the Tigersaurus. Keep shooting the Tigersaurus from above. When it is directly below you, move to one side to avoid its attacks.
After progressing through the level, you see your first Readership Bonus. These are specific sections within each level, where you will have to achieve specific things for a $3000. In the first Readership Bonus, you are sliding down the hill. Do not get hit even once for the Bonus. Move left and right to avoid the statues, whilst also shooting the vultures. You will also encounter enemies throwing chickens at you. In these instances, aim for the chickens flying at you first.
The second Readership Bonus will be given for climbing a rock wall without getting hit. This Readership Bonus is significantly easier. Simply jump repeatedly, avoiding the obstacles, and shooting the vultures.
The comic will end after defeating two tigersauruses on the long rope bridge. As there is nowhere to climb up, you should be aware that you can slide under the tigersauruses when they jump at you. After the rope bridge, the comic is over and you will see all of the money you have earned. Your subtotal consists of money earned from how well you did in terms of time, kills, accuracy, deaths and Readership bonuses. You will also gain extra money if you did not use the Help Me super item. The total money earned displays how much money is earned in total, taking into account the Bonus items you have purchased from Winklemeyer.
Nanoc The Obliviator #286
The level will begin with the funeral of the guy that you killed. Defeat the enemies in the melee section. Perform well in the melee section for a chance to earn another Help Me super item from Twisted Pixel.
The first Readership Bonus will be for climbing up the rock wall without taking damage, as before. The enemies will be slinging chickens at Captain Smiley this time. As you are jumping, stop often to shoot the vultures and chickens.
The second Readership Bonus will be for traversing the treetops without taking damage. Both types of vultures will attack you in this section. You should particularly beware of the smaller vultures that fly from the sides, as they are faster and require quicker reactions.
Work your way through the level and you will eventually meet The Puttmaster, who knocks Captain Smiley out with some golf balls. The Puttmaster is originally from The Adventures of Captain Smiley, but has also had to find a new comic, due to the cancellation. Captain Smiley breaks free and runs through the Golf Course. Shoot and/or jump the statues, whilst also shooting the vultures and Golf Carts. Note that the golf carts will be firing explosives at you. Later in the course, there will also be tribesmen slinging chickens at you once more.
At the end of the course, you will enter a temple and be faced with your second Reaction Sequence. Hit 5 buttons correctly to complete the sequence. You will soon meet Nanoc, who is a little overweight, thanks mainly to The Puttmaster. Walk towards Nanoc when you regain control and attack him three times to start the final cut-scene for the level.
Nanoc The Obliviator #287
Captain Smiley begins the level underneath Nanoc’s butt-cheeks. Great . . . I feel more sorry for Star. Nanoc moves and apologises, before asking you to save Nordya.
You regain control in a Golf Cart. You can move jump to avoid obstacles, whilst also moving left and right. There will be vultures attacking you from above, whilst other enemies in Golf Carts will be throwing explosives at you. Focus first on the vultures before diverting your attacks towards the Golf Carts.
The scene changes and you will see your first Readership Bonus, were you should avoid getting hit by the following vultures, explosives and Golf Carts. After exiting the Golf Cart section, you will again be travelling on foot, facing the usual enemies. There will also be a couple melee sections early in this level, giving you opportunities to earn a Help Me super item.
You finally meet The Puttmaster at the ‘last hole’, where he deals with Nordya. You also meet The Puttmaster’s ‘friend’, Rufus. The second Readership Bonus here is to defeat The Puttmaster without taking damage. Run up to The Puttmaster and mash the attack button (RT). He will occasionally do a special attack with his golf club. He pauses for a second, so step back and allow him to run at you, before attacking him again.
After defeating The Puttmaster, you will face Rufus. Rufus has a few different attacks. Sometimes he will simply fly low from one side to another. Avoid this attack by jumping or sliding. If Rufus sends a missile into the air, attack him and jump as the missile hits the floor. Rufus will also send out many missiles. If he releases them vertically, he will leave a gap. Either jump through the gap, or slide to avoid the missiles. Another deadly attack is the release of many explosives, as Rufus flies across the screen. Again, he will leave a gap, so find it quickly.
Complete three sections of the first comic genre.
After defeating The Puttmaster, Nanoc arrives and ‘rescues’ Nordya. Nanoc thanks Captain Smiley and gives him his reward.
Once you return to the base, talk to Gerda to learn where you will guest star next. Paper Lad, the lead in this comic, needs your help to find Origami Kid.
Improbable Paper Pals #77
Yes, the comic already sounds bad. Yes, Paper Lad is the worst comic book character ever. And yes, you will have to endure three levels worth of it. However, it’s actually a lot of fun, especially with Star getting censored left, right and centre.
The level begins with a melee section, with security guards attacking you, possessed by Mistress Ropes. Other enemies that you will encounter include Mistress Ropes’ Henchmen. These will be hanging from the ceiling, and will throw oriental fans at you. Shoot them, whilst avoiding the fans. Occasionally, you will meet Henchmen without fans. In these cases, they will spin towards you. Shoot them, or jump/slide to dodge them.
The first Readership Bonus is to climb the rope whilst avoiding getting hit. Don’t be afraid to jump back down to the bottom to avoid attacks, as this will not injure you. Later in the level, you will meet ventriloquist dummies. They are two types. Some will throw daggers at you, whilst others will breathe fire towards you. Jump over the daggers to avoid them. The fire can only harm you if you are close enough to it.
Work your way through the museum and you will eventually reach Mistress Ropes in front of a dinosaur skeleton, the Fossil-O-Saurus, which is summoned to life. You will also receive your second Readership Bonus of the level if you avoid being hit by the Giant Fossil-O-Saurus. Aim to shoot at its head at all times. The dinosaurs attacks will change depending on where you are. If you are standing to one side, it will walk forward and charge towards that side. If you standing down the bottom, it will turn around and attack with its tail, summoning spikes from the floor. If you climb either wall, the dinosaur will jump at you, head first.
After reducing its health so far, the dinosaur will take its head off. The head will then attack you Pac-Man style around the four walls. The head will also do a deadly attack from one side to another, using both the ceiling and the floor. It is difficult to dodge. Soon, the head and body will reattach, and the fighting styles are as normal. Reduce the enemy to zero health to end the fight. After a cut-scene, and the reading of ridiculous fan-mail the level will end.
Improbable Paper Pals #78
The level starts with Captain Smiley floating in space. Much of this level is styled like a shoot ‘em up. Destroy the robots whilst avoiding their attacks, and you should be fine. The first Readership Bonus is near the start of the level for flying through an asteroid section without getting hit. Shoot the asteroids to destroy them and dodge through gaps. This is a fairly easy readership bonus.
Shortly after the asteroids, you will encounter a second type of robots. These blue robots will shoot lasers across the screen. Stay in the safe zone between any two lasers and shoot the robots as per usual. You will also encounter the henchmen from the previous level, who will again throw paper fans at you and spin towards you. Mistress Ropes will also introduce air planes from the museum to attack you. In the section with the laser-robots and the air planes, attack the robots first to open up more space to move. You will also encounter larger, green asteroids, which break into smaller asteroids.
Soon, you will meet Mistress Ropes once more, where she reveals her plan to transport all women to the planet Eurybia. Here, there is a second Readership Bonus for defeating Mistress Ropes without getting damaged. She has a few attacks. She will throw rope-snakes at you. Simply move to avoid them. The second attack type is two ropes which stretch from one side of the screen to the other. These can be horizontal or vertical. You can tell the difference based on the position of her arms. Stay between the ropes and continue to shoot Mistress Ropes. The third attack type will see her sling Asteroids at you. Either shoot them or simply move to avoid getting damaged.
Once you have reduced her health to zero, a cut-scene will follow. Origami Kid will arrive with a “Locket Ship” to chase after Mistress Ropes.
Improbable Paper Pals #79
Before beginning this level, make sure you have the maximum amount of Help Me super items. You will need them for an achievement later on.
At the start of the level, you will be running through the rolling-pin shaped space ship. Shoot the usual enemies that will be running towards you, as well as the gold and silver robots. The first Readership Bonus will be rewarded for making your way out of the panel without getting hit. You will be standing in front of a computer, whilst robots, ventriloquist dummies and henchmen armed with paper fans attack you.
Part way through the level, you will face Benny, an old acquaintance of Captain Smiley, though he does not remember. You will gain an achievement if you can complete this fight without getting hit. You may wish to return here later when you have maxed out Captain Smiley’s stats.
Survive a specific section without getting hit.
Allow yourself to die first to restart the section with full health. When the fight re-starts, run to the right, shooting behind you. Jump up or down, depending on where the drill is heading. The fight will change slightly soon, with the introduction of obstacles, which you must jump, and missiles, which can be destroyed easily in one shot.
As soon as the page turns and you are free falling, use all three Help Me super items one by one as quickly as you can, whilst also avoiding the drill. If this does not defeat Benny, or you cannot activate all three soon enough, the page will turn again, and you will be running to the side once more. Avoid the new laser-type obstacles and shoot behind you, as per normal. The achievement should unlock as soon as Benny’s health is reduced to zero, providing you do not get hit. If you do get hit, allow yourself to die to restart the fight.
Immediately after you have defeated Benny, there is another Melee Section, giving you another chance to earn a Help Me. Shortly, you will return to fighting the usual enemies and get a chance to earn a second Readership Bonus, for climbing a rope without getting hit. There is not a great distance to climb, and don’t hesitate to jump down to start again if you feel you cannot avoid an attack.
Climb a few more ropes and you will see that Mistress Ropes has Origami Kid. The fight against Mistress Ropes is mostly the same as in the previous level, but she does have a new attack; a jumping rope. I don’t think I need to explain how to avoid this.
Complete three sections of the second genre.
After an awkward conversation with Paper Lad, the level ends. No more censoring!
When you talk to Gerda again in the Base, you will find out that someone has been stealing money from you. You will also receive a distress signal from Brad, who is stuck in a Manga comic. Brad asks for your help and admits to stealing the money.
Cutie Cutie Kid Cupids Volume 10
You enter the comic and immediately meet CoCo and NaNa, two emotionally intense kids, who both celebrate your arrival. Captain Smiley asks about Brad and the two kids call Pling Pling, their rainbow pony.
When you gain control of Pling Pling, you will be faced with shadow creatures. Shoot them as usual, whilst moving left and right to avoid their attacks. The shadow creatures with white masks will explode, so jump to avoid getting damaged. Soon, Pling Pling will be flying and you will see some new shadow monsters. Shoot the skulls that move towards you. Whilst in the air, you will also see some bat-type enemies.
After a while, you will face LoLo, your first boss. Avoid the star attacks by moving into the free space, whilst continuing to shoot at the enemy. When her health is reduced to zero, you will face some more shadow monsters and bats, before facing her once more. The second time you face her will be part of a Readership Bonus, where you must avoid getting hit. Try to recognise the patterns early and move quickly.
After defeating LoLo, Captain Smiley is being dragged behind Pling Pling on the water. Jump the obstacles and shoot the shadow creatures and bats to progress. You will then see another boss; a giant floating head. Avoid the obstacles by jumping whilst continuously shooting it. Also avoid his nostril attacks by shooting whatever it is that he shoots at you. When the floating head uses its laser, jump to avoid the focus point. The health will eventually reduce to zero and LoLo will talk once more, killing Pling Pling.
CoCo and NaNa will take you to Brad, but first you must sing and dance, in an attempt to resurrect Pling Pling.
Cutie Cutie Kid Cupids Volume 11
Volume 11 starts at CoCo and NaNa’s school. Run past all the schoolgirls and you will eventually reach Brad, who looks as though he is about to hang himself. Once you regain control, you will enter into a melee section. Defeat the crazed schoolgirls without getting hit to earn another Help Me super item. Once you reach the gym, you will be fighting the shadow monsters again. You will also have schoolgirls running at you. The first Readership Bonus will be awarded for traversing the locker room without getting hit. Focus on the schoolgirls and the skulls (whichever is closest) before you shoot the shadow monsters.
Once you have exited the lockers you will meet schoolgirls with new attacks. You can easily jump the attacks from girls that shoot hearts at you, but the other two attacks can be tricky to avoid. You must slide under the large force-field, whilst you can avoid the ‘fart tornadoes’ by stepping back. There is also another melee section. In the dinner hall, you will also meet the bats from the previous level.
Later in the level, you will meet CoCo and NaNa again. They are angry at you for trying to take Brad away from them. The animal that has been following you along with CoCo and NaNa, will transform into a giant version of his former self. You must defeat Giant HeHe without getting hit for the second Readership Bonus. You can jump the tail spins, but note that they are not always in one continuous direction. If HeHe jumps, jump upon his landing to avoid the impact of his landing. If HeHe begins to cry, you must avoid his giant teardrops. Once HeHe’s health is reduced to zero, he will transform back to his original form and the comic ends.
Cutie Cutie Kid Cupids Volume 12
Volume 12 will begin with Captain Smiley and Brad riding Pling Pling, running away from CoCo, Nana and HeHe. The first Readership Bonus is right at the beginning of the level. You must defeat all the bus passengers. There are four passengers per bus and four buses in total. The passengers will be throwing explosives at you, whilst bats attack from above. Also watch out for the impossible number of wheels that roll towards you.
As the page turns, Pling Pling will be flying again. Shadow monsters and flying buses (with schoolgirls shooting hearts at you) are your enemies here. Soon, you will fight CoCo, one of the Kid Cupids. It is very similar to the fight against LoLo, so just move into empty spaces and work out the patterns quickly. After you have defeated the first Kid Cupid, you will face more shadow monsters and buses, before fighting NaNa, the second of the Kid Cupids. Defeat NaNa without getting him to earn the second Readership Bonus.
After defeating the two Kid Cupids, a cut-scene will follow and you will face Giant HeHe for a second time. HeHe has different attacks now. If you are standing to one side, he will attempt to squash you against the trees, dodging from one side to another. Slide underneath him to avoid getting damaged. When HeHe’s body opens up revealing his heart, you must shoot it, whilst avoiding the pulses. There are two gaps in the pulse, so use the four walls to reach them. HeHe’s giant teardrops, jump attacks and tail spin attacks can all be avoided by climbing to the upper corners of the area. After reducing HeHe’s health to a certain point, one of the Kid Cupids restores his health to 215,000. This happens twice. After reducing HeHe’s health for a third time, a cut-scene will follow, with LoLo returning to help you. Finish off HeHe whilst the three Kid Cupids fight eachother to return HeHe back to his normal form.
Complete three sections of the third genre.
The comic finishes, but not before Captain Smiley and the three Kid Cupids do a cute little dance.
Captain Smiley has guest-starred in three different comic genres, and now has enough interest to star in his own comic once more!
New Adventures of Captain Smiley #00
This comic starts in very much the same way as the first level, except Captain Smiley has a brand new costume. Dr. Winklemeyer has once again tied up Gerda with the intention of blowing up the bank. Once you regain control, you enter into a melee section as before. Exit the bank to the right, as in the first level and you will again face the Bradbots. Note that there is a theme tune playing in the background now, with new Captain Smiley related billboards in the background. Another major difference is that The Puttmaster is used to slide down the roof instead of a Bradbot.
After using The Puttmaster as a skateboard, you will encounter your third and final reaction sequence of the game. Complete it without making any mistakes to earn the achievement.
The Bradcopter has also been removed, replaced by Mistress Ropes. The final boss of the game is the Meat Monster from Splosion Man; Mr. Meatenstein. There is a Captain Smiley Is Awesome Bonus for defeating Mr. Meatenstein without getting hit. Move and jump to the sides to avoid his lower hand slam attacks. Also watch for the impact on the ground, jumping to avoid getting damaged. You can dodge the upper hand arm swing attacks by sliding underneath them. Keep aiming at any one hand to defeat it. After Mr. Meatenstein has eaten his first hand, flies will begin to attack you. Defeat all four hands to see Mr. Meatenstein eat Misterss Ropes.
Continue to the right, defeating more Bradbots as before. When you reach the construction site, you can earn a Captain Smiley Is The Coolest Bonus by moving through the section without getting hit. There are flies attacking you here. Once you have reached the end of the construction site, Captain Smiley will jump of the building and meet Brad. The fight against the Bradcopter is different this time, as there will always be Bradbots fighting and shooting you. Also, the Bradcopter occasionally drops bombs all the way across the area. Jump or shoot them to avoid getting damaged.
Once the Bradcopters health is reduced to zero, you must fight Brad one on one. Melee attack him to reduce his health. Watch out for the silver Bradbots that Brad summons from the left.
Play every reaction sequence mistake-free.
After Brad is defeated, the comic is over, and the following cut-scene clearly shows that the New Adventures of Captain Smiley is a massive success. You will earn both of the above achievements after the cut-scene. If you have not completed each reaction sequence without making a mistake, simply replay one of the three levels that you need to.
It is likely that you have just one achievement remaining at this point. Go to the Stats Menu at the Base (right of Gerda) to view how many shots you have completed. For references purposes, I had fired 50,000 shots by the end of the game, despite holding down the shoot button pretty much continuously.
Fire 125,000 total shots.
From the Comic Jump, load up the Adventures of Captain Smiley Challenge 1. Defeat the first Bradbot. Now use an elastic band or similar to hold the fire bottom down. Make sure to have a wired controller to avoid your controller turning off. Finish the challenge and check the menu every so often to check your shot count.
Well done, you have now completed Comic Jumper. Congratulations!
