7. Skiing
Main Event
Skiing is one of the easier sports in the game, providing you know how to play effectively. Your general skiing stance should be with your legs a few feet apart, with your knees bent and your hands rested on your knees. Your slight crouch will perform a tuck to increase your velocity, whilst the distance between your feet will allow you to turn quickly.
There are three courses; Crystal Canyon, Racers Ridge, and Perilous Pass. Each of these have two hills so that you and your opponent can race at the same time. When competing, you will race using both hills. As you go down the hill, you must aim to pass through every gate. Missed gates will give you a time penalty. The difficulty selections not only change the ability of your opponent, but also the position and number of gates on the course.
Select any course. Crystal Canyon on Rookie is recommended. As the race starts, there will be a countdown. Squat down and swing both of your arms back and forward as if you are holding skis when the countdown says Go. This will give you a perfect start, unlocking the "Go! Go! Go!" achievement.
Perform a perfect start out of the starting gate when playing Skiing
From here on out, try to remain in a tuck position with your stance as described above. This will allow you to move left and right to move through each gate. After holding a tuck position for 10 seconds, you will unlock the "Maximum Velocity" achievement.
Go fast by holding the tuck position for at least 10 seconds when playing Skiing
There are jumps on each of the courses. When you are in a green area, you should jump. This will give you a perfect jump, as well as the "Big Air" achievement.
Perform a perfect jump on any ski run when playing Skiing
The final non-DLC Main Event achievements all require perfect races. A perfect race is when you pass through every gate on both hills of a particular course. You do not have to win these races, so if you want you can take your time. Avoid squatting to slow down and make sure you are playing against Rookie AI to reduce the amount of gates on the course. Get a perfect race on any course (Crystal Canyon is easiest) for the "Perfect Race" achievement.
Race a perfect race (don't miss any gates) on both ski runs when playing Skiing
After getting a perfect race on one course, play and complete perfect races on the other two. Once you have obtained a perfect race on Crystal Canyon, Racers Ridge and Perilous Pass, you will unlock the "Peak Perfection" achievement.
Race a perfect race on all three hills at Sunny Peaks
The final non-DLC Main Event achievement requires six perfect races. You can either choose to play and complete three more perfect races within the hills at Sunny Peaks, or simply play the Midnight Mountain Ski Pack DLC, as this has three more hills. The achievements in the DLC also requires you to complete perfect races on all courses, so you will inevitibly get the achievement anyway. Whichever you choose, the "Perfect Race Star!" achievement will unlock after your sixth perfect race.
Complete six perfect races when playing skiing (cumulative score)
Downhill Dodge
The "What Obstacles?" achievement requires you to play the Downhill Dodge minigame and obtain 50+ points. In this minigame, you start with three chances. You must ski downhill and dodge the various obstacles. Use the stance recommended above for the best chance to avoid the obstacles. You will also need to jump obstacles, so don't get too comfortable with your stance.
When you reach the bottom of the hill, you will return to the top with a different course. Each single obstacle avoided will earn 1 point, and each obstacle you hit takes off one chance. Finish a round for a score bonus of 10 points and a chance bonus. Reach 50+ points for the achievement.
Score more than 50 points in Downhill Dodge
Midnight Mountain Ski Pack
The Midnight Mountain Ski Pack DLC can be purchased for 400 Microsoft Points from here. The DLC adds three new courses and 5 new achievements.
The three new courses are Backwoods Blast, Pitch Black and After Hours. There are achievements for beating specific times for these courses against Champion AI opponents. On Champion difficulty, there are much more gates. It is recommended that you play each course one by one until you beat the times required. Learn the gate placements for each of the courses, and practise/perfect your stance and moving left/right. You can afford to miss a couple of gates on each course, but you should be aiming to pass each one.
Beat 1:50 on Backwoods Blast for the "Blast Course" achievement.
Blast-off time - Beat 01:50:00 on Midnight Mountain's Backwoods Blast course (Champion difficulty)
Beat 1:55 on Pitch Black for the "Midnight Express" achievement.
Out of the darkness - Beat 01:55:00 on Midnight Mountain's Pitch Black course (Champion difficulty)
Beat 2:15 on After Hours for the "Opened All Hours" achievement.
Clock is ticking - Beat 02:15:00 on Midnight Mountain's After Hours course (Champion difficulty)
After you have obtained each of the three achievements above, you should aim to obtain perfect races on the three courses. Perfect races are easiest on Rookie difficulty, so select this, and take your time, making sure to pass each and every gate on the two runs to each course. Once you have done this successfully, you will unlock the "Mountain Pressure" achievement.
Pressure is on - You need a perfect run on each course of Midnight Mountain
The final Skiing achievement will probably have already unlocked. "Gate Expectations" is obtained by passing a cumulative total of 500 gates across the three Midnight Mountain courses.
This is a classic - Pass a total of 500 gates on Midnight Mountain (Cumulative)
