3. Story walkthrough
Introduction
On this page you will find all the collectibles and achievements, in chronological order. The game contains a number of weapon/trap achievements and these will be highlighted the first time you encounter the relevant weapon or trap. There is no point in grinding these out on your first playthrough, as you will easily obtain them all by the time you finish your third and final playthrough.
There are a couple of very minor spoilers in this guide, namely the locations of the hidden keys you need to progress through the campaign.
After completing the game once, Act 10 will be unlocked. I would recommend completing all three campaign playthroughs before attempting this act. The reason for this is that after completing the game three times, you should have obtained most, if not all, of your weapon achievements. If you find yourself missing one or two of them, you can use those specific weapons in act 10 and obtain the relevant achievements easily.
ACT 0 - AARON AND KATJA
For starting the game you will receive
This is where it all begins.
You start the game locked in a prison cell. Follow the tutorial prompts, and pick up
WEAPON 1/39 - PIPE. Any kills with this weapon, and other tools (bloody metal bat, bone crusher, and meat hammer), will count towards the 50 kills you need to earn
You can also use your fists instead to kill enemies (you can do this whilst holding a weapon by punching using your free arm) and you need 50 fist kills to earn
When you interact with the door, you can then open it by using a 'door opening' motion with your arms, however I'd suggest you kick it instead (raise either foot) to earn the following achievement (if you miss it you can kick any other door in the game, so don't worry!)
There is more than one way of opening a door.
Exit the cell, and follow the tutorials on moving and combat. Pulling the switch will earn you
Soon you will kill your first zombie and earn
Subdue your fear and confront the horrific.
There are two achievements for killing 100, and 500 zombies throughout the game. These will come easily to you as you play
You cannot always run from danger.
Leave nothing moving in your wake.
Move to the end of the level and obtain

ACT 1 - THE TRAIN
Play through the level until you get the mission objective 'Get to the dining car'. As you head towards the aforementioned dining car, you will encounter your first four "secret" events - these are places in the game where you can look (ie point!) at a specific object and glean some more information on the storyline. They are denoted with a 'LOOK' icon and are pretty easy to spot, if you know where to look! As you walk through the first carriage, keep an eye out on your left for an open compartment containing a lone female passenger wearing headphones LOOK 1/12. Interact with the 'LOOK' icon to obtain
The actions of others are fascinating.
Move down the train and go through the door. As you do so keep an eye on the window on the right for your second secret event
LOOK 2/12. Keep moving forward until you experience a cutscene where you bump into the cute English 'secretary' while trying to open the door. Before entering this door check out her curves
LOOK 3/12. Keep going forward, and find
LOOK 4/12 inside a compartment on the left containing two soldiers. Inside the dining car, avoid the irritating guy on his phone by sidestepping and turn 180'. Your first tarot card
TAROT 1/22 (0 - THE FOOL) will be on a table on the right. Collecting it will earn you
At the end of the dining car is a kitchen. Before going into the next carriage enter the kitchen door and collect your first detective tape
TAPE 1/22 - IN EASTERN EUROPE and receive this achievement
Keep going until you finish the level and you will obtain

ACT 2 - THE SURVIVORS
As soon as you start, crouch under the wreckage in front of you and find LOOK 5/12 on your immediate left. Work your way out of the train, until you reach the run event. To get past this bit you need to run on the spot. Make sure to lift your knees high and run quickly. You will find yourself in a cave, turn 180', find and investigate the bald guy on the floor for LOOK 6/12. Just past him in the cave entrance is TAROT 2/22 (I - THE MAGICIAN). Proceed, and after swimming through the water look right in front of you on the path for TAPE 2/22 - UNSEEN PRESENCE.
After you encounter the fortune teller from the train look ahead of you and left for TAPE 3/22 - THE SINISTER FOREST on the floor. Move forward, talk to the ballerinas, but before going into the basement door hang a left, move to the intersection and look on the ground to the left for TAROT 3/22 (IV - THE EMPEROR). Keep going through the level, until you reach a room with four bodies on slabs. On the shelves to your left is TAPE 4/22 - MUTILATED REMAINS, and on the other side of this room is WEAPON 2/39 - MACHETE. Before you investigate the corpse in the next room, look left and pick up WEAPON 3/39 - SURVIVAL KNIFE. Any kills with this weapon will count towards the 50 you need to obtain
Keep swinging that knife.
and this survival knife is one of several weapons (survival knife, machete, hatchet, ice saw) you can use to gain the achievements
They're creatures. It's okay.
Dismember a single creature while leaving it alive.
For 'Headhunter' you need to behead 50 enemies, you should obtain this during your first walkthrough. For 'Craftsman' you need to dismember a zombie (ie cut off three limbs) - I obtained this in act two on my 'humane' playthrough, completely by accident! Just aim for the arms and head with any bladed weapon throughout the game and you'll easily obtain it as you progress.
Make sure to pick up WEAPON 4/39 - KNIFE ARM from a dead zombie. Kills with this weapon (and other 'arm' weapons) count towards the 50 you need to earn
Take weapons from creatures.
Once you're back in the graveyard, work your way to the well lit arch and keep an eye out for a stack of coffins blocking direct access to this arch. On top of them is
TAPE 5/22 - WANDERING CADAVERS. Proceed to the end of the level and obtain

ACT 3 - HOUSE OF MADNESS
Exit the cell with your bald companion and move forward until you see a guy get electrocuted. Take the key from his neck. As you leave this cell, turn right and look into the cell on your left for LOOK 7/12. After you part company with your companion, go in the first door on your left. On a counter on your left you can find WEAPON 5/39 - SCALPEL and at the back of this room is TAPE 6/22 - THE MISSING MAN. In the next room collect WEAPON 6/39 - ICE SAW. Any kills with the Ice Saw or Hatchet (found later on) will count towards the 50 you need for
It's good for more than chopping down trees.
Once you enter the toilet, check inside the last cubicle on the left for a blood-filled toilet and a key. Proceed, and look next to a locked iron gate for WEAPON 7/39 - BRASS KNUCKLES. Any kills you get with these, or any other knuckle dusters will count towards the 50 you need for
Keep punching. Don't stop.
Once you turn on the spinning blades, you have an opportunity to start working towards the 20 kills you need for
You need to lure them into their doom.
Simply stand on the other side of the blades, and let the zombies walk into them. This is also a good time to mention the following achievement
Knock out more than one at a time.
To obtain this you need to hit and knock out 3 enemies at once. If you don't get it here don't worry, as usual there will be ample opportunity later in the game. Exit this room, and kick the crate under the stairs in front of you and pick up WEAPON 8/39 - VOLATILE TEST TUBE. Kills with test tubes will count towards the 50 you need for
Keep tossing those tubes.
Note the red explosive crates at the bottom of the stairs, you can kick enemies into these and start working on the 20 kills you need for
Go up the stairs,and notice the electrified door further down the corridor on your left. Walk past this door, turn left, destroy the crate, pull the switch and enter the room (for subsequent playthroughs just ignore this door and go through the non-electrified one). Inside you will find TAPE 7/22 - STENCH OF DECAY on the CCTV panel, immediately to your left is TAROT 4/22 (V - THE HIEROPHANT) and next to the tarot card, but on the other side of the stack of boxes is WEAPON 9/39 - CREATURE GLOVE.
Once you enter the underground room with the three hanging corpses, go to the far end of the room and find TAPE 8/22 - THEM on the shelves. Activate the circuit breaker, and collect WEAPON 10/39 - STUN ROD ARM from a dead zombie. Raise the trapdoor next to the switch and go down a level. The next corridor is full of both zombies, and spikes on the wall. Kick the zombies into the spikes to start working towards the 20 kills you need for
As before, there's no point in grinding this now, just try and kick as many as you can into the spikes each time you encounter them. Head to the end of the corridor and collect WEAPON 11/39 - BLOODY CHAINSAW. You need 100 kills with powered weapons (chainsaw, meat mincer, drill) to obtain
It's easy to cut things down to size.
Go up the ladder, and you will shortly enter a room filled with both zombies and explosive crates. Don't forget to kick as many as possible into the crates. After the loading screen take a left at the junction and pick up WEAPON 12/39 - GIANT TONGS from the left hand wall. You need 100 kills with scissor type weapons (giant tongs, hedge shears, bone shears) to obtain
Plants aren't the only things you can prune and trim.
On your right are two crates, destroy them and collect TAROT 5/22 (VIII - JUSTICE), then head back the other way, collecting WEAPON 13/39 - VASE on the left hand wall as you go. Once you get past Ernst, head to the bottom of the stairs and turn 180' so you're looking at the stairs. On the left hand side of the stairs is a pillar in the corner, behind this is TAPE 9/22 - REPORT 1.
In the next room look next to the fireplace for WEAPON 14/39 - FIREPLACE POKER. In the next room, the first fridge on your left contains WEAPON 15/39 - MEAT HAMMER and the corpse on the table holds a hidden key.
In the next room you come to, make sure you collect WEAPON 16/39 - SHOCK KNUCKLES from the second wardrobe on your left. At the top of the next ladder, look on the shelves to your left for TAPE 10/22 - REPORT 2. After answering the telephone, look around you on the floor for TAROT 6/22 (III - THE EMPRESS).
At the bottom of the next ladder, pick up WEAPON 17/39 - HATCHET from the left wall and proceed. You will enter a room full of floor spikes, here is your first chance to start working on the 20 kills you need with these for
Attacks from below are effective against creatures too.
Move slightly forward to get the zombie's attention, then stand behind the spikes and let them walk into the traps. Before leaving this room destroy the wooden crates behind the floor spikes for WEAPON 18/39 - STUN BATON. Make your way past Ernst again, up the stairs and before opening the next door check out the right hand wardrobe for TAROT 7/22 (II - THE HIGH PRIESTESS). After going through the door turn left and you'll see TAPE 11/22 - MARY on top of a cabinet.
The wardrobe in the next room contains WEAPON 19/39 - GOLD TEST TUBE. Proceed into the next room and investigate the rack of dresses in front of you LOOK 8/12. Keep moving forward until you come to a room with piles of skulls on tables, one of which contains the door handle. At the end of the room on the right is TAROT 8/22 (XVII - THE STAR), and the crate in this room can be destroyed for WEAPON 20/39 - SILVER HATCHET.
During the boss fight you will be required to perform various QTE-type events. After completing 50 of them throughout the game you will obtain
Demonstrate outstanding response time.
After the boss fight cross the bridge and smash the barrels to obtain TAROT 9/22 (XVIII - THE MOON), then proceed to the end of the level for

ACT 4 - FRIEND OR FOE
You start act four outside on some stairs. Turn left at the top and find the room in the left corner for WEAPON 21/39 - ACID PUMP, four cases of test tubes and TAPE 12/22 - INTRUSION. Exit this room and head towards the opposite corner of the courtyard, but go via the fountain area. Kill the zombies around the fountain, making sure you pick up both WEAPON 22/39 - POWER SAW ARM and WEAPON 23/39 - CREATURE CLAW. Smash the crate along the fountain's edge for a key and look back towards the area you came from. You should spot a crate on a counter, smashing this will yield WEAPON 24/39 - HEDGE SHEARS.
Now proceed towards the far corner. When you hear a voice say "Hey you! Over here!" take a left up the stairs and investigate the well LOOK 9/12. Now go into the barn, open the door and collect TAROT 10/22 (IX - THE HERMIT). Follow your new best friend into the next building and he'll give you a new objective. Once he's done so, look at him for LOOK 10/12. After climbing the ladder, turn left and follow the path to the end. Smash the crate for WEAPON 25/39 - MEAT MINCER. Complete this objective, and after the cutscene look on the floor to your right for TAROT 11/22 (XIII - DEATH). Now return up the ladder to where you found the Meat Mincer. The same crate will now contain WEAPON 26/39 - KATANA. Go out the door and head to the right hand side of the fountain (where Ernst is walking around). Check the stairs on the right for TAPE 13/22 - THE MANSION.
Proceed through the level, climb the spiral stairs and during the boss fight make sure you collect WEAPON 27/39 - BONE CRUSHER. Before entering the portal collect TAROT 12/22 (XII - THE HANGED MAN) from the centre of the room. Proceed, and once you enter a long room with lots of pillars, check behind one of them on the left for TAROT 13/22 (XIX - THE SUN). When you get to the "offer a prayer" section, look behind the altar for TAROT 14/22 (VII - THE CHARIOT).
After picking up Azoth, you can start working towards the 100 Azoth kills you need to obtain
Let loose with loads of energy.
Proceed until you return to the room where you had the last boss fight. In the middle of the room is
WEAPON 28/39 - MORNING STAR. After killing all the enemies here look on the floor at the top of the spiral staircase for
TAROT 15/22 (XVI - THE TOWER). Proceed through the level and you will find yourself somewhere rather familiar! After pulling the first switch, turn around and look in an unlocked cell to your left for
TAPE 14/22 - IMPRISONED and
WEAPON 29/39 - KATARA. Before you leave the dungeon, make sure you collect
TAPE 15/22 - THE SECRET on the floor in front of another switch. At the end of the level you will obtain

ACT 5 - THE FOREST
Move forward through the level, but keep a lookout for a blue car on your left. Here you can find TAROT 16/22 (X - WHEEL OF FORTUNE). In the next clearing, look to your right for WEAPON 30/39 - REAPER SCYTHE. Proceed until you see a blue car on the right. On the bonnet/hood (depending on which country you're from!) is WEAPON 31/39 - BLOODY METAL BAT, pick it up but you won't be keeping it. Head behind the car and collect WEAPON 32/39 - DRILL.
As you continue, look out for a cave on your right hand side. In here you can find TAROT 17/22 (VI - THE LOVERS). Before swimming across the water, destroy the crate for WEAPON 33/39 - GOLDEN HATCHET. When you are given the objective to destroy the four towers, you will start facing the altar. Look to your left on the floor for TAPE 16/22 - THE ALTAR. There are also two tarot cards in this section, TAROT 18/22 (XI - STRENGTH) can be found on the right of the crate you must destroy to climb the tower staircase, and TAROT 19/22 (XX - JUDGEMENT) is inside a tent at the bottom of the staircase of the first tower on the right hand side of the altar. Near the tower on the left of the altar is a barrel that can be destroyed, and contains WEAPON 34/39 - BONE SHEARS.
At the end of the level you will obtain

ACT 6 - THE NIGHTMARE
You can now start working towards the 100 kills you need for
Push both hands out in front of you to fire both chains simultaneously. Leave the cell and turn left, move forward and find the unlocked cell containing
TAPE 17/22 - THE YOUNG COUPLE. At the top of the next staircase you come to is
TAPE 18/22 - THE GIRL. Once you return to the courtyard from act 4, go back to the room that contained the acid pump and four cases of test tubes to find
TAPE 19/22 - INFORMATION.
Return to the well in the opposite corner LOOK 11/12, and search the adjacent building (where you released the dogman earlier) for TAPE 20/22 - REBORN. After going in the main building check behind a pillar to the right of the staircase for TAPE 21/22 - UNDECIPHERABLE.
At the end of the level you will obtain

ACT 7 - VIKTOR
Proceed through the train, and look on the floor on the left hand side of the dining car for TAROT 20/22 (XIV - TEMPERANCE). When you appear in a blood-filled corridor, immediately turn around to collect TAROT 21/22 (XV - THE DEVIL). Killing your first enemy in this section will earn you
Defeat as many kinds of creatures as you can.
In the third blood-filled corridor turn 180' and collect WEAPON 35/39 - CHAINSAW. During the boss fight you will pick up WEAPON 36/39 - YULI'S BLADE, and completing the level earns you

ACT 8 - STIRRINGS OF DEATH
When you start act 8, look on the floor directly in front of you for TAPE 22/22 - O ZHUVINDO and receive
