Alan Wake's American Nightmare Walkthrough

3. Story walkthrough

Introduction

In this page you will find the walkthrough for "Story Mode". In this mode, other than completing the basic objectives of the story-line, you have to collect 53 Manuscript Pages to unlock one achievement. There will be three areas, and you will have multiple chances to visit them and find all of their Manuscripts (each visit lets you collect new and different manuscripts). In addition to this, there are also some "TV/Radio Shows" available, but other than adding something to the plot (especially the TV Shows), they aren't very important, and can be ignored if you want.

You can read without worrying about spoilers: the text will remain clear from story-related information, with the sole exception of writing your current task in Italic style before the description of the things available when that's your current task. In any case, they will never contain main story-related information (at most they can hint at something, but nothing special).

Manuscript pages will be accompanied by an ID in parenthesis, such as (1.3) . The first number is the location (1 = Rest Stop; 2 = Observatory; 3 = Drive-in Theater); the second number is the position of the manuscript page in the "official list" which you will see in-game. This is because you will often collect manuscript pages in an order which is different from the one the game uses when it lists them in the "Manuscript Pages" menu. For instance, the second manuscript you find is the eighth of the in-game list, and the third you find is the tenth of the in-game list. If you see you're missing the eighth (in the in-game list) manuscript of the Rest Stop area, search with the CTRL+F function of your browser typing "1.8" (while browsing this page) and you will immediately find its location.

There will be collectible videos added to the text walkthrough, in case you need more indications on where to go to find a specific manuscript page. The order of the items in the video will be the same as the text.

Remember that you can replay each of the nine parts in which the story is divided if, from the title screen, you pick Story Mode, and then Replay Scenes.

====================================

Act I

Manuscripts video.

Rest Stop

From where you begin, pick up the Flashlight from the ground, then keep going. Some objects will block your path. Use the boosted flashlight (LT) to destroy them. Continue down the path, and grab the Pistol from the ground. As you do so, the first Taken of the game will spawn, and after defeating him, a "Woodcutter" Taken will try to surprise you from behind the fence ahead (not a surprise any longer wink). Remember that you can reload your weapon by pressing/tapping X.

Leave the canyon

Proceed until you find Manuscript Page # 01/53 (1.1) just on your way. Pick it up, and then move on until you get a cutscene about the Motel.

Explore the motel

You can head either left or right, since the paths both lead to your goal. After a few steps, you will see Takens spawning.

Escape to the motel!

This is one of the rare situations where it will be better to run than fighting. Follow the advice and flee(hold LB to run; Alan has limited stamina, but it's more than enough to flee) to reach the light of the first Safe Haven of the game, which despawns the Takens following you. Note that after a few moments, the light will be turned off, and the enemies behind you will respawn.

Investigate the garage

Directly in front of you (West of the Safe Haven), there's a suitcase on the ground. If you try to open it, it will tell you that you need to find three manuscript pages in order to unlock it and grab its content (SMG). Since you don't have them right now, follow the marker on your minimap (top-left corner of the screen) to reach the garage. On the way, you will unlock:

Escape! Achievement in Alan Wake's American Nightmare

Escape!10 (10)

Offline Required - This achievement requires play in offline game modesSingle Player - This achievement can be obtained in single player game modesMain Storyline - This achievement is gained automatically by progressing through the main game mode
Escape the Taken to the motel.

On the mini-map you may notice a blinking question mark. The game will explain this to you later too, but in case you're wondering about it right now, it's the icon of a Manuscript Page(the one in this area isn't available right now). The other icon you can see (three short vertical white lines, or something like that) represent an ammo box. They will completely fill your ammo, at the "cost" of being unavailable for a few minutes afterward. Make sure you restock every time you have a chance(and need).

Once you enter the garage, you will receive Manuscript Page # 02/53 (1.8). After the scenes, you can continue to speak with the lady for more story-related dialogues (they are optional, but they add something to the plot). Inside the garage you can find the "famous" Nailgun, although it looks cool in Alan's hands in the marketing for this game, the 9mm Pistol is a better weapon.

Find the three items for rewriting reality

From the garage, make a stop at the ammo box to get more bullets for the Pistol. Between the garage and the building where the ammo box is, if you go South you can find Flare x 2. Keep going South, and you will certainly see a bright TV which you can turn on to watch a "show". From the TV, head Southeast to find Manuscript Page # 03/53 (1.10) attached to a small fence.
Keep going East from the last manuscript, and you will reach the gas station. You can turn left to reach and open the suitcase with the SMG if you want (you have to exchange your current pistol with it, and it's a good deal to do so). Then, from the suitcase, go Northeast to reach a small wooden building where you will find a Pump-action shotgun (and some ammo nearby). This is a good weapon which you can use for a big part of the game (it doesn't work very well from afar, but it's devastating in middle-to-close range). You can test it on the three Takens which will spawn nearby if you head up the hill.
Anyway, from where you got this weapon, return on the road and then proceed North. At one point, you will be near a building with a "Diner" sign. On the opposite side of the road attached to some rusty machinery, you will find Manuscript Page # 04/53 (1.2). Note that some enemies may spawn nearby if you stay in this area for too long.
Now head for the Diner, and proceed to its left (Southern-most) side--you will spot Manuscript Page # 05/53 (1.6), shining on a rock. Back on the road, this time head South, where the main story objectives are also located. On the left (East) side of the road, there will be a couple of trucks parked. Head between them, and three Takens will spawn. Defeat them, and then continue East/Southeast until you locate Manuscript Page # 06/53 (1.5).
You are also close to one of the key items required. On the left side of one of the trucks, there will be a Battery to pick up (don't try to spot it directly, just walk near the truck until you see an interaction command to pick it up).

Find two more items for rewriting reality

Go West from here, across the road. There will be a Safe Haven, and a small yellow truck just under the light. In the back of the truck you can find the Flare Gun, the most powerful weapon of the game, which you shouldn't use unless you're facing some really bad guys since it doesn't restock at the ammo box. So, after picking it up, press the D-Pad_Up or Right (Up if you want to choose the shotgun, right if you want to use the Pistol/SMG) to get back to a more common weapon. If you drop below the street from here, you will notice that there's a small tunnel just below this part of the road. Inside the tunnel, there's a suitcase which requires 10 manuscript pages to give you access to the powerful Magnum weapon. We have to leave it for later though. Continue South. Barely on the right side of the road, you will easily spot Manuscript Page # 07/53 (1.4) attached to a small wooden fence.
From the last one, proceed East to cross the road, and then head Southeast. You should spot the light of Manuscript Page # 08/53 (1.3). On your way there, a Splitting Taken will surprise you. This is already a good chance for an achievement. Shine your boosted flashlight on him, and he will split into two halves. Then boost the light on each of the two halves so that there will be four smaller enemies to deal with (this is usually not advisable, since you want to take him out when he's just one enemy but this is an exception for the achievement). At this point, try and get two of them close to each other, and fire with your shotgun. You will unlock:

Split Splat! Achievement in Alan Wake's American Nightmare

Split Splat!18 (15)

Offline Required - This achievement requires play in offline game modesSingle Player - This achievement can be obtained in single player game modes
Take out two Splitter spawns with a single shot.

In case you miss this achievement now, don't worry, there will be plenty of chances to get it later without even trying. Anyway, after collecting the eighth manuscript, and possibly the above achievement, enter the building from where the Taken assaulted you. Inside, you will find the second key item, the CD, on a small table. Nearby there is also a Carbine Rifle, which you can get in exchange for the Pump-action Shotgun, but it's not a good deal if you ask me (just a personal opinion though).

Find the final item for rewriting reality

At this point, you only have to head where the third marker is. After a scene, three Takens will assault you. Defeat them, then get the Valve from the ground, and that makes 3/3. On a side note, remember that you can buy time when the space is tight if you need to reload your weapon, by shooting boosted flashlight on the enemies (even if you already took their shield down). Just a quick shot of light in their eyes and they will stop for a moment, giving you enough time to prepare the next shots.

Talk to Emma about recharging the battery

Head back to the garage. After a short scene, you can continue the conversation with Emma once again.

Go to the oil field to rewrite reality

While you're here, although you should have consumed just a few bullets, make use of the ammo box to restock your inventory. Then proceed where the story marker is(head for the place where you got the shotgun, then continue upwards).

Clear the oil field of enemies

Some Takens (there should be 6 in total) will spawn as you go up the hill; they're no match for your flashlight and shotgun. Not far from where they spawn, you should also find a small shack where some ammo and the Revolver (pistol) are located. As soon as you reach the top of the hill, two Splitting Takens will spawn. This time, avoid using boosted light on them, and shoot with your big gun. 4-5 shots each will be enough to take them out.

Match scene to manuscript page (and following)

Nothing special here: just place the three objects where the markers are located, and remember to "start" the light and "turn" the valve by pressing B near them after putting them in position (to rotate the valve, tap A as displayed on the screen). Some cool scenes will follow, and you will unlock:

Rewrite Achievement in Alan Wake's American Nightmare

Rewrite10 (10)

Offline Required - This achievement requires play in offline game modesSingle Player - This achievement can be obtained in single player game modesMain Storyline - This achievement is gained automatically by progressing through the main game mode
Rewrite reality for the first time.

There's really only one way to go then. After going down a bit, turn right and proceed to the garage.

Destroy the Taken

You will face four regular Taken first. Then, from the rooftop of the building on the side where the ammo box is, another Taken will fall down accompanied by the spawn of another regular Taken and two Woodcutter Takens. Eliminate the smaller ones first, then defeat the big guys, paying attention to their ramming attack.
After the fight, you should also spot the green light of a radio (about Northwest of the garage). If you want, you can turn it on to listen to some extra lines (not really related to the plot of this game). Enter the garage afterward.

Explore the diner

There are some other optional dialogues available if you want. Restock at the ammo box, then go back on the street and head South. A cutscene will introduce the poltergeist enemies. The poltergeist enemies, just like in Alan Wake, are possessed objects which will be thrown at you with extreme violence by an invisible entity. It's usually easy to find cover behind something that can block them (in the case of this first huge sphere, any tree can be a good place behind which you can take cover). These objects can only be destroyed with boosted light. Do so, without sparing batteries (you have plenty anyway). Enter the diner afterward, and trigger another scene. You can "examine" a white suitcase on one of the tables if you want, and then grab the keys from the floor.

Explore the motel rooms

Return to the "garage area", where three possible rooms are available for exploration. Three regular Takens and a Splitting Taken will attack you on the way. Since you won't be able to open the other two, after entering the correct one, you probably want to know that the room to proceed with the story is the middle.
The door closest to the side of the road leads to a room which is, right now, empty. You might as well ignore it. The door on the West of the garage, where the blinking " ? " marker is, will lead you to the room where Manuscript Page # 09/53 (1.7) lies, on a bed. Exit the room, and while you're here, restock at the ammo box. At last, the door opposite the garage will lead you to a room where you can "examine" a jacket, if you want, and then something more interesting on the floor. After getting the observatory keys from the floor, you will continue to the next area of the game.

Observatory - The Scientist

Open the observatory gate and Enter the main observatory

Unlock the gate to enter the next area.
Once you're inside, you'll have a fire truck on your right. On its left side, there will be Manuscript Page # 10/53 (2.1).
From here, you could go upward either left (Northwest) or right (East). Go East, toward the light of a Safe Haven. Just when you're about to reach it, three Takens will spawn after a short cutscene, so defeat them. In the same area where the Takens just spawned, you probably noticed Manuscript Page # 11/53 (2.3) on the ground. Nearby there is also some ammo.
Now continue up the road. If you can pay attention to the music, you will probably hear it changing a bit when a lonely Taken will try to surprise you from behind. Don't get caught off guard and defeat him. Once you reach the top of the hill, and you'll be directly facing the observatory itself, with a Safe Haven on your right. You can go right, downward (Northwest, more or less), towards another observatory-building. As you approach it, three Takens will spawn. Defeat them, then proceed to this secondary building to find (outside) Manuscript Page # 12/53 (2.4). Nearby, you can also find a Flare, Flashbang and some other ammo.
Back to where you were facing the observatory, go left (South), and look for Manuscript Page # 13/53 (2.5), located by a white container (check the " ? " marker on your map to locate it more easily). From here, proceed West/Northwest, around/on the left of the observatory itself. You will find Manuscript Page # 14/53 (2.2).
On the other side of the observatory is also a suitcase with a Combat Shotgun inside, but it requires 40 Manuscript Pages--something you can't have now cry. Finally, just before the door to the observatory, there's also a white truck with a Carbine Rifle and a Flare inside. Interact with the entry-phone of the main observatory. After a short scene, five Takens will spawn. Take them out to proceed.

Talk to Dr. Meadows

As you enter, you can't miss noticing another TV Show before some stairs. Watch it if you want, then continue upstairs. Upstairs, just in front of you on a table, there will be a Flare and Flashbang x 2. On the opposide end below some metal stairs, there's also Flare Gun Ammo x 1. Continue on the metal stairs, where a lift (on the Southeastern part of the observatory) has been sent down. The lift is also near an ammo box, so if you need to restock, make sure you do so. Enter the door to speak with the Doctor.

Get the imaging array

After the conversation, you can continue the dialogue with the usual interaction button (B). When you're ready, head back outside. Go Southeast from the observatory(it should be the way you came), down the street, and reach the back of another secondary observatory where the marker has been placed. In the small parking lot, you can grab Flare x 2 and Flashbang x 2 in the opposite end of where the marked car is. Afterward, examine the car itself to get the key item required.

Return to the telescope

A scene will introduce the Spider enemies--just use boosted light on them to take them out easily. You know when you defeated the last of them when you get a slow-motion kill and the "thriller" music stops. They're not really a problem, anyway. As you make your way back to the observatory, more spiders will spawn (there should be three first, then two more). Enter the observatory to continue.

Fix the telescope

Another platform, just in the middle of the area, will be lifted down. Go up that one, and fix the telescope by installing the imaging array. More scenes will trigger.

Release the coolant valves

Exit the observatory again, and look for the markers on the map. The first of the valves is on the West side of the observatory. Another one will be near the secondary observatory, in the parking lot of which you fought some spiders. As you approach it, three Takens will spawn. Finally, the last one is found near the other secondary observatory where three more Takens await.

Return to Dr. Meadows

As you release the third valve, poltergeist objects will attack you. Destroy them as soon as possible with a continuous beam of boosted light. There should be only two of them. In any case, follow the dark mist (which is the one possessing the objects), and cease your guard only when you can't see it anywhere. Three Takens will attack upon reaching the main observatory again, but that's no big deal. After some scenes inside, a bigger fight will trigger. There should be a total of about 10 regular Takens and a couple of bigger ones. The fight will finish automatically after a short while.

Talk to Dr. Meadows

Don't miss the chance to restock at the ammo box now, and then return to the Doctor. Then examine the black printer on the right (East) side of the room to get the "printout" and complete this part of the game. You will automatically get Manuscript Page # 15/53 (2.6).

Drive-in Theater - The Curator

Investigate the drive-in theater

From where you start, turn back and proceed down the street. You will notice a sparkle on the left side of it as you go down. Pick up Manuscript Page # 16/53 (3.4) on a rock. Now continue upward to reach a building where your marker has been placed. Before entering, go around the house(on its left, facing it from the street) to find Manuscript Page # 17/53 (3.1) near a fence. Continue inside the building for some more cutscenes.

Pick up the generator building key

As usual, you can interact with the other person here for some extra lines of dialogue. Nearby this person, on a chair, you can also find Flare x 3(by now you probably have maxed them out). Enter the other room of the building, where you will find an ammo box, a Radio Show, and then the keys.

Restore power

Exit the building, and go down the street. Soon, a small and a bigger Taken will attack. After the small assault, you can notice a Safe Haven and something shiny on the right side of the road. The "shiny" thing is a suitcase containing the Sawed-Off Shotgun, a weapon which requires 30 manuscript pages to unlock. Once again, ignore it, and proceed farther West down the street. Four more Takens will attack so defeat them, and keep going.
After another cutscene, a weaker Taken and two Splitting Takens will spawn. This is another great chance for "Split Splat!" achievement if you couldn't get it yet.
When they're defeated, from where the road stops going downward, take a right turn (go North), and when you see an upside-down car, go right inside a green area. You should spot, on a rock farther North, Manuscript Page # 18/53 (3.5).
After getting this one, you can turn right and go up a hill to reach a small "Souvenirs" building. Other than some common ammo, attached to a tree there will be the Crossbow weapon available. A crossbow for a shotgun isn't a great deal, especially considering that it has only a single shot at a time. It has a long range, but this doesn't compensate for its scarce power. Anyway, you're free to try it out if you want, although it's not recommended. Now go back to where the road stopped going downward. From here, proceed West in a parking lot area. You should be heading for a Safe Haven. Before that, there will be a yellow car with flashing lights turned on and by that car, you should also notice the " ? " blinking marker on the map. Examine its rear bag, and grab Manuscript Page # 19/53 (3.3).
Head for the Safe Haven and behind its light, there's a shack. Inside of it, you can find another TV Show, as well as Flare Gun Ammo x 1. On its side, another ammo box is found. Restock, and then continue North of it.
Another short cutscene will trigger, then proceed down some stairs to the West, and follow the path. At one point, you will hear the feral screams of Takens approaching but it's just a classic group of 3 of them. Near where you fought, there's a rusty tractor, and near the tractor there is another suitcase. If you had 20 manuscript pages, you would be able to grab the Assault Rifle inside. Nevermind once again cry, and keep going (a fourth Taken may spawn as you go). You will reach a fenced area. The entrance is by the green-glowing locked gate, which you can unlock with the keys you've got.

Now, this place can be confusing, so try to follow the directions I give you. From the entrance, go right (North) until you can, then turn left (West) and keep going until you can. Eventually, you'll have to turn left again(South). A group of three Takens will spawn--defeat them. Proceed a bit South from where they spawned, and you will be able to spot the entrance of the main building, on your left. Moreover, on the right (Southwest), there will be a Safe Haven. Head for this Safe Haven, and check the sacks on the ground to spot Manuscript Page # 20/53 (3.2).
Finally, enter the building, and make your way through the devices to reach the marked spot. Here you will have three levers, and an ammo box on their left. The correct combination to proceed is (from left to right): lever up, lever down, lever up (so, examine the first and the third one, but not the middle one). A cutscene will follow, as well as the spawning of some Takens (there should be only a smaller one and a bigger one).

Turn on the lights of the guard building

Make your way out of the building, paying attention to the elecric beams which will be on/off periodically. Once you're outside, you can't make your way back from where you came, because there's something blocking the path (yeah, Alan prefers to go through an area filled with tilted generators shooting beams of electricity rather than climbing up a couple of piled up objects). Now, more than before, pay attention to the directions.
From the exit of the previous building, head left(South/Southeast), and then turn left to face the East side. Keep going East (stay on the side closest to the building where you've just been) and go through a fence. After some walking, you should spot some sparkling objects on the right side(they're common ammo), as well as a locked gate, again on the right side. Since this is not the way to go, go left instead and stay by the fence. After going past an electric beam, the fence has an open part through which you can continue. At this point, you should be heading North.
After a few steps North, check your left (West) to find another opening in another fence. Go through it, then turn right and proceed forward. You're heading towards the light of a Safe Haven before which, on your right, there's the gate from where you came.
Upon exiting, a short cutscene will trigger, and three Takens will spawn. Along with them, up a hill, a Grenade-throwing Taken will also spawn. This guy is annoying, and will attack from a distance. Try your best with the Pistol to reach him (the gunshot isn't very good from afar). Once they're all gone, go left from the gate, up the path, and turn right when you can. You should be able to reach the rusty tractor and open the suitcase with Assault Rifle inside of it toast. It's an alright weapon, with less power but a faster shooting rate than the regular shotgun you previously had. Considering that it can also shoot from long distances with good results, I'd say it's time to upgrade your gun and pick this one up.

When it's done, make your way back to the parking lot. A regular Taken and two Grenade-throwing Takens will attack, and the Assault Rifle will help here. After they're done for, don't forget to restock at the ammo box on the side of the shack by the Safe Haven. Then proceed back upwards on the street, to return to the beginning of this place. On the way, dodge a car which will be thrown at you, and fight two bigger Takens and a group of 3 smaller Takens. Another smaller Taken will try to surprise you near the building where you're heading. Inside the building, the light switch is just on the left of the entrance door.

Enter the projector building

You can have some extra dialogue if you want otherwise, just restock your ammo and head back to the projector building.

Destroy the dark fountains

The "fountains" here will be three immobilized huge poltergeist objects. Go near each of the marked spots, and they will spawn. Takens will attack you, but they will be automatically defeated as soon as you destroy the closest "fountain". You might as well just fire at them, and then deal with the fountain, anyway.

Enter the projector building and Match scene to manuscript page

When it's all done, enter the access code on the right of the door to this building. The items you have to interact with this time are both in the first room you enter. One is a white calendar, attached to the wall just on the left of the door to the Southern room (examine it twice). Another is a giant black digital clock, on the right of the same door (examine it twice too). Many cutscenes will follow now, and you'll be back at the Rest Stop area.

Act II

Manuscripts video.

Rest Stop - Setback

Leave the canyon

As you start, check on your left to find a Flare Gun. Not far from it, Manuscript Page # 21/53 (1.15) will be clearly visible on some piece of wood. Keep going and you will spot some rifle ammo and a Flashbang on the ground. Continue on.

Talk to Emma

As soon as you're by the oil derrick, check on the right side to spot the light of Manuscript Page # 22/53 (1.9), but before reaching it, you'll have to face two Bird Takens. Defeat them with a quick round of your assault rifle. If you use boosted light on them, they will escape by turning into birds again (still, do so if you're in a tight spot and need to send them away).
Go down the hill, and check the shack near which you first found your Pump-action Shotgun. The lights of the nearby truck are turned on. Anyway, on the North side of the shack you will find, on the ground, Manuscript Page # 23/53 (1.11).
From here, go towards the diner (North on the street), and check one of the tables outside to find Manuscript Page # 24/53 (1.16).
Now go South down the street to reach the gas station, and keep going forward from here. There will be a yellow truck (which used to be under the light of a Safe Haven) on the right (West) side of the street. Other than common ammo, it also has a Flare Gun inside. From the yellow truck, go a few steps South, and then drop off the edge of the street on the West side. You should be able to spot the tunnel where a suitcase is. Open it with your now-acquired 10 manuscript pages, and grab the powerful Magnum pistol.
From here, go West and return to the spot where you found the valve earlier. Attached to some wooden fence by the metal structures, you will find Manuscript Page # 25/53 (1.14) (help yourself with the blinking " ? ", as usual). You can also find some ammo/Flare nearby, but you should have a full stock by now.
Make your way back to the gas station. From here, proceed West towards the light of a TV Show and, North of it, Manuscript Page # 26/53 (1.13).
Then head to the garage, and speak with Emma.

Find the battery

Once again, there are optional extra dialogues available. In the nearby area you can also see another blinking " ? ", which this time is located in the building closest to the street (its door is locked right now, so ignore it). Restock at the ammo box, and make your way to the cave where the marker is pointing.
Despite the sarcastic comment of Alan and the creepy atmosphere, this place is actually rather safe... Until you pick up the battery, that is.

Talk to Emma about recharging the battery

After getting the key item, spiders will spawn from three holes. Keep your back to where you got the battery and fight them with the light. There isn't too many of them (as usual, listen to the thriller music/pay attention to the slow-motion final kill to know when they're all gone), but more will spawn as you're about to exit the cave. Finally, two more groups will spawn on the way back to the garage/motel area. It's a good idea to proceed straight East from the exit of the cave, so you can reach the street and have a clear view there.

Go to the oil field to rewrite reality (and following)

Optional dialogues are available, but you should know that by now. Head back to the oil field up the hill. On the way, a couple of Bird Takens will spawn. so take them out with your Magnum.
Keep going, and another Bird Taken will spawn. Four smaller Takens will accompany him (use the rifle for these ones). Once you reach the oil field, you should know what to do. Same applies for what happens afterward, only that this time you will find a couple of smaller Takens and a bigger one on the way.

Return to Emma

In the garage/motel area, a couple of smaller Takens and one Woodcutter Taken will spawn at first, then a smaller Taken and two Splitting Takens will follow. Restock at the ammo box, then proceed in the garage.

Explore the motel rooms (and following)

Optional dialogues are available in the garage & a Radio Show available outside (Northwest of the garage). The "correct" room/building is the same as the last time (the middle one), but first of all you want to enter the door of the building closest to the street. Inside, you will find Manuscript Page # 27/53 (1.12).
In the other "wrong" room (the door of which is on a wooden platform by the Radio) you can find Flare Gun Ammo x 1. Finally, enter the correct room to continue.

Observatory - Progress

Get the imaging array

Defeat the four Takens (a Grenade-throwing and three regular) which will spawn once you enter the fenced area. Then take the left (Northwest) path, and enter another fenced area on the right side. In this area, there's an ammo box(restock while you're here) and, if you follow the path behind some giant containers, also Manuscript Page # 28/53 (2.12).
Back on the street, now take the right (East) path instead. Another group made of the same Takens as the last one will spawn, so eliminate them. Now make a right turn into an area with a building and a white truck. You will easily spot Manuscript Page # 29/53 (2.10), as well as a suitcase by the wall of the nearby building(West/Southwest of the truck itself). The suitcase contains the Hunting Rifle, a powerful one which you may want to get to replace your Assault Rifle. It has the downside of being slow though, so it's up to you whether you prefer power or speed (I'd stick with the Assault Rifle).
In this same area, there's a break through the fence. Proceed through it to reach the parking lot. In here, there will be a car where the marker is. Grab the imaging array from its rear bag, and then make sure to collect the Manuscript Page # 30/53 (2.7) from the edge of the cliff past another broken fence (just Southeast of the car).

Return to the telescope

On your way, you will come across two Bird Takens. Shut them up with six bullets of your Magnum. You'll have the pleasure to replicate the same fight after walking a bit further.
Now that you've reached the observatory, check the rear of the truck in front of its door. It used to have a Carbine Rifle and a Flare inside (and it still does), but now there's also Manuscript Page # 31/53 (2.9) inside.
Head on the right (Northwest) side of the observatory now, and you will find Manuscript Page # 32/53 (2.11) just in front of the suitcase with Combat Shotgun (which you still can't open cry). You know the way then.

Talk to Dr. Meadows and Secure the primary pipes

Inside, there's another TV Show if you want; then keep going to find/get Flare, Flashbangs x 2, Flare Gun Ammo. Follow the events--you can trigger some optional dialogue if you head up the lift on the metal stairs/platform. Outside, follow the street which goes downward (Northwest) from the observatory(the way you didn't come from) to a secondary observatory. By that building, after dealing with some enemies, you will find Manuscript Page # 33/53 (2.8).
Proceed farther down the street, and more enemies will spawn. Expect an ambush from three Takens from the right side of the street, and then three more regular Takens, accompanied by two bigger Takens, from down the street. Enter the fenced area to reach the marked spot then, and look for a grey control box to examine. After using the switch inside of it, you will unlock:

Return to Dr. Meadows

After the cutscenes, head North/Northeast up the way from where you came, and be ready to deal with up to six poltergeist enemies after a car is thrown just in the middle of the road. Like earlier, check the black fog to know where to expect the next one. After going up the road further, there will be a side path on the right side which can lead you upwards (it's also lit with several Safe Havens which will turn off before you can reach them). If you try to proceed on the main street, a giant block will fall and block your way. Before being able to enter the observatory, you'll have to deal with 4-5 weaker Takens and a bigger one, then, just before the door, a mixed group with Grenade-throwing Takens will spawn. Hurry up and use the entry phone to escape inside.

Talk to Dr. Meadows (and following)

Refill your ammo at the ammo box, then proceed with the story. You will automatically get Manuscript Page # 34/53 (2.13).

Drive-in Theater - Relapse

Pick up the generator building key

Head for the building where Serena is. On its side, before entering, you can't help but notice Manuscript Page # 35/53 (3.11).
Everything is like the last time. Three Flares by the entrance, ammo box, Radio Show, and keys in the other room.

Restore power

Exit the house. If you proceed down the street, a smaller and a bigger Taken will attack. Instead of proceeding down the street though (you may want to do so anyway to get the Sawed-off Shotgun from the suitcase on the right side, although the Magnum is probably a better weapon due to more bullets per reload and more power from afar), go to the opposite side of the road from the building where you've just been, and follow the path North/Northwest, towards the Souvenirs shop. If you wander around the Souvenirs shop building for too long, five Takens will spawn. Anyway, Manuscript Page # 36/53 (3.7) will be found on a wooden platform Northwest (on the left, facing the shop) of it.
From here, go downwards to reach the parking lot. Soon, a cutscene will trigger, introducing the spawning of a Woodcutter Taken and two Bird Takens. After getting rid of them, proceed on the right (North/Northwest) to reach the big cinema screen. At the bottom of it, you will find Manuscript Page # 37/53 (3.8).
Make a stop in the small wooden shack by the Safe Haven of the parking lot, and enter inside to watch a TV Show if you want. There's also a Flare Gun Ammo if you want (though you should have maxed it out by now). Outside, don't forget to restock at the ammo box. From the shack, proceed all the way South. It will be a long walk, and you have to run even past the building with the projectors inside(it will be on your left as you go). At one point, you will eventually see a sparkling object near some rocks. Approach it to obtain Manuscript Page # 38/53 (3.10).
From the last manuscript, proceed right, towards another building/turret (you should be going Southwest); here you will find also Manuscript Page # 39/53 (3.9), but pay attention to the ambush of five Takens.
Return to the last ammo box, and proceed with the story now, going towards the gate of the area with the generators. About 8 fast Takens will assault you on the way.

Inside the fenced area where the generators are, you can replicate the path you took the last time: go right (North) at first, then follow the path turning left twice where you'll reach another Safe Haven and the entrance of the building.
As soon as you enter, you will most certainly notice Manuscript Page # 40/53 (3.12) on the right.
Continue to the switches, and this time operate them the opposite way as you did the other time: just lift the middle lever, leaving the other two down.

Enter the projector building

A group of four spiders will spawn(three ahead, one on the right). Exit the building, defeating four more spiders on the way. Now that you are outside, a large group of spiders will try to surprise you. Don't get caught, and slay them all. The way out is the same as the last time too, but there's also a manuscript to grab as you go. From the exit of the building, go left past a beam of electricity, then keep heading East. Stay on the left side, near the wall of the previous building. Go through a fence, and then move on the right side to find some ammo. Past them, you should be able to spot (help yourself with the blinking " ? ") Manuscript Page # 41/53(3.6), on a table.
When it's been obtained, go North of it to find another passage in the fence, then proceed left through yet another fence, and you should find yourself at home.
Outside the fenced area, you'll be welcomed by two Woodcutter Takens and a Bird Taken.

There is nothing else worth mentioning here--[almost] nothing new, at least. I'll let you end the local events by yourself.

Act III

Manuscripts video.

Rest Stop - Resolved

Leave the canyon

Grab a Flare Gun, and then some rifle ammo/Flashbang. You'll have to face your first Chainsaw enemy here. A couple of rounds from your Assault Rifle/5-6 bullets of Magnum should be enough. Feel free to use your Flare Gun here if you want. After the fight, you will easily spot the light of Manuscript Page # 42/53 (1.17) attached to some wooden object.

Match scene to manuscript page (and following)

You know the way.

Return to Emma

As soon as the task changes to this one, go right (North) up the street, towards the "Diner". Once you're at that point of the street, go on the right (East) side of it, and proceed farther East, up the hill a bit. You will come across Manuscript Page # 43/53 (1.18), attached to a wooden fence.
Back on the street, keep going towards the motel now. You will trigger the spawn of a smaller Taken, a Grenade-throwing Taken, and another Chainsaw Taken. Once they're done for, examine the bottom of the "Motel" sign to find Manuscript Page #44/53 (1.19).
After reaching the garage area, two Bird Takens will spawn, then a Woodcutter will follow. Restock at the ammo box, and enter the garage to continue.

Save Emma by securing the fuse box

Go Northwest from the garage and turn on the Radio Show if you want. From here, proceed West, and you should be able to spot the light of Manuscript Page # 45/53 (1.20), standing on one of the tables outside (to get there, you have to go up a few stairs North of it).
Then move on towards the marker on the map, and while you're around these parts, watch another TV Show and grab the final Manuscript Page # 46/53 (1.21) of this location.
"Secure" the fuse box to continue. As you approach it, four regular Takens and a Woodcutter Taken will spawn.

Return to Emma and Explore the motel rooms

Follow the story events (you can pick up a Flashbang in the room closest to the street, and Flare Gun Ammo in the other optional building).

Observatory - Completed

Secure the primary pipes

Take the path left after entering the very first gate. Several enemies will spawn from behind another fence(where the control panel is). You should defeat the smaller ones first, and let a Woodcutter Taken smash the gate with his charging attack. This will allow you to go inside and operate the switch.

Return to Dr. Meadows

As you continue up the street, you'll be attacked from the Northeast by two regular Takens and a Chainsaw Taken. Moreover, from the left side, another smaller Taken will try to surprise you. When they are all defeated, go around to where the Chainsaw Taken and the other two spawned and you should see the sparkling of Manuscript Page # 47/53 (2.14).
Keep going on the only possible way (once again, look for a side path lit by Safe Havens, since the main road will be blocked by a giant container) to reach the main observatory. A Woodcutter Taken will attack you from the left as soon as you're up on the hill and two minor Takens will join later. After the fight, head left and go around the observatory itself. You will come across the suitcase with the Combat Shotgun inside clap. It's a terrific weapon, and it's worth exchanging it for your Assault Rifle (it lacks power for long-range shots, but you have the Magnum for those). Once you reach the front door of the observatory, a couple of Splitting Takens will let you try it out. There's also a poltergeist car standing before the door of the observatory, but boosted light will take care of it. Before entering though, make a detour down the hill (Southeast), so you can spot and grab Manuscript Page # 48/53 (2.15) on a rock by a green sign.

Since this is the last collectible of this area (other than the usual TV Show inside the observatory), I'll let you finish the local events by yourself. Just expect a large wave of enemies inside (so, restock as soon as you can). At the end of the events you will automatically get Manuscript Page # 49/53 (2.16).

Drive-in Teatre - United

Restore power

You're already in the generators area here. Go through a fence, and a couple of smaller Takens will spawn along with a Woodcutter and a Chainsaw Taken. To give you an idea of where you are now, you are where you got a Manuscript Page the last time you went in this place. To contine, from where you just fought, go left (West) and follow the way until you reach the Safe Haven located just in front of the entrance of the building. Defeat some ordinary enemies here, and then reach the switches and the ammo box inside the building. Refill your ammo, and this time turn on (up) only the right lever.

Enter the projector building (and following)

There won't be spiders or Taken inside, but a moderate group of fast Takens will welcome you outside. Once they're defeated, exit this place. From the exit of the main building with the switches, go left and then proceed North. After reaching the area where you triggered the first fight of this place (the first of this third visit, that is), exit on the right (about East) side of it, through the first gate/fence where you passed through. Three fast Takens and a couple of Chainsaw Takens will assault you outside the fenced area. Mop them up with your Magnum/Combat Shotgun (or even the Flare Gun if you want). Keep going to the parking lot where four more Takens will attack before you can reach it. Instead of going up the stairs which lead East to the parking lot, proceed North to reach the spark of Manuscript Page # 50/53 (3.14).
Then enter the parking lot, and restock at the usual ammo box by the shack near the Safe Haven. Enter the shack itself to find the last TV Show, as well as Manuscript Page # 51/53 (3.13) just near the TV set.

At this point, you're supposed to go South, towards the projector building, to continue with the events. Do not go there yet. Instead, head East, and make your way back to what used to be the entrance of this area (go upwards on the road). Once you reach the building where Serena is, go on the opposite side of the street. Here you will find (help yourself with the minimap) Manuscript Page # 52/53 (3.15).
Turn around, and keep going even past the very first gate of this location. After the gate itself, turn right and you will spot the final Manuscript Page # 53/53 (3.16). If this is your 53th manuscript page, you will unlock:

Now you don't have anything else to do other than finishing the game. Feel free to shoot your Flare Gun Ammo at the "fountains" to speed things up (this time, destroying them will not destroy the nearby Takens), and enjoy the ending of the game (feel free to skip the credits by pressing B if you want). For completing it, you will unlock:
