3. Story walkthrough
AMERICAN HISTORICAL CAMPAIGN
Select the American campaign on simplified and start up the Pre-War chapter.
We're going to manually take off at the beginning of this mission and unlock:
Also during the Pre-War chapter we will have to land on a aircraft-carrier, this will happen at the end and we will be given detailed instructions on how to do so, a successful landing will unlock:
Land on an aircraft carrier.
Completing the Pre-War chapter will unlock:
During the 'Return To Oahu' mission we will have to make a 'touch-and-go' on Ford Island. This island is the only small island in the middle of Pearl Harbor and is easy to make out. There is a place where you can land on this island but all we really need to do is touch all our wheels firmly on the ground then accelerate and take off again. The achievement will unlock as soon as we do it so if it doesn't unlock just come to a stop and take back off again. This will unlock:
Make "Touch and Go" on Ford Island in the mission "Return to Oahu".
During the 'American Counter Attack' mission you will have to re-arm on the airfield. All we need to do here is fly out and attack a cargo ship and exhaust our ammunition, then fly back to Wake and land on the airfield there. This will unlock:
Rearm on the airfield between attacks on hostile ships in the mission "American Counterattack".
During the 'Japanese Raid' mission we will have to destroy at least six enemy bombers before they reach the Wake. There are up to twenty three bombers who will attack the Wake, these are indicated by blinking markers, fly below and behind them aiming for the engines. Shooting down a mere six will unlock:
Destroy 6 enemy bombers before they reach the Wake in the mission "Japanese Raid".
By the time we reach the 'Two Against Thirty-nine' mission we should earn the second rank unlocking:
During the 'Two Against Thirty-Nine' mission we will have to land on the airfield whilst damaged. At the end of this mission make sure to press 'A' to continue after the cutscene. We then need simply land and this will unlock:
Land your damaged aircraft on the airfield in the mission "The Two Against Thirty-Nine".
Completing the 'Battle Of Wake Island' missions: American Counterattack, Japanese Raid and Two Against Thirty will unlock:
During the 'Invasion Of Tulagi' mission we will have to damage the destroyer with machine gun fire. During the mission we will be ordered to sink a Destroyer, if we make sure to hit it with our MG's we will unlock:
During the 'To Scratch One Flat Top' mission you will have to destroy two enemy fighters with your rear gun. During this mission we will be attacked from the rear by a group of Zeroes, we need to switch to our rear gunner with the 'Y' button and shoot down at least two of these. There is a second chance later on in the mission after we destroy the Jap carrier, so there is plenty of opportunity to unlock:
Destroy two hostile fighters with the rear gunner in the mission "To Scratch One Flat-top".
Completing the 'Battle Of Coral Sea' mission will unlock:
During the 'American Strike' mission we will have to stay near our flight leader, just stay in formation near the centre of the group and this will unlock:
Stay near the flight leader all the way to the enemy fleet in the "American Strike" mission.
During the 'Fate Of Hiyru' mission you have to complete the first secondary objective. After we take off we'll fly along with our wingmen for a spell until we are given a secondary objective indicated by a yellow circle. Fly south towards this objective and destroy any Zeroes that attack, this will unlock:
Complete the 1st secondary mission objective in the "Fate of Hiryu" mission.
During the 'Tulagi Landing' mission we have to complete the first objective in under five minutes. When we get our first objective fly past it and activate a cutscene with some Zeroes. The objective requires us to destroy all Zeroes as quickly as possible. Gun them down fast with fly-by's and don't be afraid to kamikaze a couple times and switch between the four aircraft we have. Successful completion in under 5 minutes will unlock:
Complete the first objective in less than 5 minutes in the "Tulagi Landing" mission.
During the 'Battle Of Henderson Field' we will have to kill fifteen infantry units, also this is the best opportunity to gain some ground target kills.
To kill fifteen infantry; take off at the beginning and head towards the waypoint, we should see a hillside near a river and if we zoom in with 'LT' we'll see the infantry troops spread out. We'll want to make repeated fly-by's over the infantry slowly and low down gunning them down with our machine guns, while using the zoom function and watching our altitude and surroundings being careful not to crash. We have to kill them quickly as other units will kill them for us and render us unable to accumulate at least fifteen. Successfully killing fifteen of these ground infantry will unlock:
Kill 15 enemy infantry units in the "Battle for Henderson Field" mission.
This video courtesy of 'MrKORNKLOWN' shows the achievement in action (albeit on the identical PS3 version):
Also destroying '100' ground units cumulatively by now will unlock:
By the time you reach the 'Battle Of Santa Cruz' you should have destroyed one hundred aircraft unlocking:
During the 'Battle Of Santa Cruz' mission we will have to destroy twenty enemy bombers. There are more than twenty bombers for us here so just concentrate on each bomber one by one, keep low and aim for the engines. If we still don't get twenty by the time the mission ends press 'A' to continue and clean them up. This will unlock:
Destroy at least 20 enemy bombers in the "Battle of the Santa Cruz" mission.
Completing the American Historical Campaign will unlock:
JAPANESE HISTORICAL CAMPAIGN
Now we move onto this campaign on simplified difficulty.
During the 'First Wave' mission we will have to destroy all the vehicles in Wheeler Field. We are required to destroy the four Jeeps driving on large field near the hangars, these can be a little elusive but they are weak and we have four planes equiped with bombs and MG's and a lot of time to take them out. Once they are destroyed this will unlock:
Destroy all vehicles on Wheeler Field in the mission "First Wave".
Completing the 'Attack On Pearl Harbor' mission will unlock:
During the 'Second Wave' mission we'll have to bomb two different targets with one loadout. We are required to bomb but not necessarily destroy two different Battleships, one bomb each will do. This will unlock:
Bomb two different targets by one loadout in the mission "Second Wave".
During the 'Attack On Lexington' mission we cannot allow the enemy fighters to destroy any of our bombers. We have 12 bombers in two wedge formations, they will be attacked by a lot of fighters and if bomber is fully destroyed we will fail. Keep an eye on the radar and watch out for any fighters that are directly targeting the bombers and be sure to eliminate them swiftly while avoiding friendly fire. When you run low on ammo switch to another aircraft and continue to protect the bombers. We can tell if we've lost a bomber as the number will be on the screen (on simplified). Successfully protecting the bombers will unlock:
Don't let enemy fighters destroy any bomber of your group in the mission "Attack on Lexington".
By the time you reach the 'Shokaku Defense' mission you should have earned the fifth rank, this will unlock:
During the 'Shokaku Defense' we have to survive the entire mission. We will have to survive three separate waves of enemy aircraft. If we receive too much damage we can switch aircraft without affecting the achievement, avoid flying above the dive bombers and the Torpedo planes as their rear gunners are most effective there. Successfully surviving the three waves will unlock:
Don't die in the mission "Shokaku Defense".
During the 'Counterattack' mission we will have to locate the TF-17 Carrier fleet. This fleet is off to the southeast from the start of the mission. We need to ignore the objective and and head at full speed towards these ships to identify them before our wing commander does. Once they appear on our radar we'll unlock:
Find the TF-17 carrier fleet in the "Counterattack" mission.
Completing the 'Battle Of Midway' chapter will unlock:
Completing the 'Guadacanal Campaign' chapter will unlock:
Completing the 'Japanese Historical Campaign' will unlock:
Now we have to load up three missions on the more difficult Realistic difficulty and complete some specific objectives. Now there is a trick to making this difficulty a lot easier, we're going to make a custom difficulty which makes the game think that we're playing on Realistic and will unlock these achievements with greater ease.
*Please see the 'General Hints and Tips' section of this walkthrough to learn how to do this.
Now go to the completed campaign missions list and select the 'Battle Of The South Pacific' mission using our custom difficulty setting.
In the 'Battle Of The South Pacific' mission land on the 'Zuikaku'. Be careful when taking off at the start, it may take a few attempts due to the wide and now realistic nature of the aircraft's behaviour, however keep it straight and we should be fine. Once in the air we're going to rendezvous with our leader and switch to rear gunner view. Dive bomb the carrier until we get a new objective, proceed in rear gunner view until we get the secondary objective to land on the Zuikaku. Press 'A' to continue and prepare to land on the seemingly very small carrier. Approach low and reduce speed to around 75% lower the landing gear and slowly lower speed and altitude as we approach the carrier, once we touch down we will stop quite quickly but if we get to close to the end we can quickly speed up and take off again to retry, (however if we crash the mission will end). Successfully landing on the Zuikaku will unlock:
Again using the custom setting load up the 'Battle Of The Eastern Solomons' mission to destroy five enemy planes. We are not only going to target specifically individual fighters who are attacking our bombers we are also going to stay near our bombers at all times. After the waypoint we need to position ourselves behind our bombers and await the attacking fighters, once they begin to get close target them one by one using controlled bursts of fire. If a fighter looks like its going down don't chase it, stop shooting it and move to a new target. After destroying five fighters the achievement will unlock in game, but remember losing more than ten allied bombers will fail the mission so take care of them. This will unlock:
Again using the custom setting load up the 'First Carrier Fleet' mission to destroy three enemy bombers in each wave of bombers. At the beginning of the mission we'll want to immediately decrease our altitude in order to get below the enemy bombers and out of their line of fire. Hose the bombers and destroy as many as possible to protect our ships, but save the cannon for the second wave. We will get twelve enemies with torpedoes this time lower down, aim for their engines with controlled bursts of the cannon and take out as many as possible. The last wave of bombers will be a mix, again circle round their rear and use controlled short bursts to attack their engines. Successfully downing at least three from each of the three waves and obviously protecting the ships will unlock:
Unfortunately there isn't much we can change about Simulator difficulty. We can use the Realistic custom setting and tweak it slightly to make it qualify for Simulator but we are still in for a challenge here.
Firstly we need to get an exact idea of our targets, so load up the 'Midway Atoll' mission on SIMPLIFIED first. After we're free to explore I found it a great help to actually draw a simple sketch of the shape of the larger island from the map and mark the AA guns, trucks and bunkers for an easier idea of their positions. Only the targets on the larger island count for the achievement so ignore the smaller island altogether. Fly around for a while and try to remember things like the buildings and features of the island, and select 6 or 7 of the easiest most distinct targets for elimination. Personally I found the three AA guns along the piers to be easy to locate and take out and I liked the small truck near the large building on the north side too.
Load up the 'Midway Atoll' mission on Simulator / custom difficulty and destroy five light targets on Midway Island. Taking off is tricky in itself, my best advice is to use a light touch on the toggle stick to gently ease our nose up and try to remain as straight as possible while using full speed. Once leaving the carrier we will get a lot of problems with control as the aircraft will unforgivably descend and fight us. Immediately raise the landing gear and use the toggle stick to gently control the aircraft but don't use any sharp movements and we'll gain as much altitude as required nice and easy.
Once in the air meet up with our friendly bombers and speed towards the objective, overtaking them. We don't have to take out any fighters but if you get a good chance go for it. We have to save as many of our wingmen as possible and avoid the flak fire on this one. The large part of Midway Island has around 15-20 targets eligible for the achievement, but we only need five. Concentrate on your pre-selected targets primarily but if you happen to see some flak come from an AA gun revealing its exact location and you're lined up for the shot- go for it. Use a view you feel most comfortable with and use the zoom function to focus your fire more. Our aircraft is going to shake and shimmy violently with every shot so use bursts and if you have allied aircraft in reserve don't be afraid to kamikaze into the targets to finish them off. Good luck.
Successfully destroying at least five targets will unlock:
Check out this video courtesy of 'MrKORNCLOWN' to help you. (It's for the PS3 version buts there's no difference and it's in German and he does things a little differently to what I've recommended but ultimately he gets the job done).
