5. Multiplayer
Prepare yourself for a lot of multiplayer gaming. If you enjoy the multiplayer then you can just sit back and patiently work towards each achievement through natural progression. If you want to get these done and dusted, then below are the best methods for getting these without too much frustration.
The first thing you’ll want to do before you dive into the online multiplayer world is get yourself familiar with what the multiplayer has to offer. There’s a mode called “Training Ground” which you’ll find on the Main Menu. This will walk you through the basics using different scenarios such as Execution, Guardian, Annex and Submission against a select number of bots. Once you complete all of the scenarios you’ll earn the following achievement:
Successfully complete the 5 lessons of multiplayer Training Grounds

When you die in any Multiplayer mode, you’ll enter Spectator Mode. Simply press the X button to take a screen capture or “photo”. Once you’ve done this, head over to the Main Menu and head into your War Journal. Find the photo you took and press Y to upload it.
You can gain the following by simply setting up a Private Multiplayer match on each map that is shipped with the game. You can, of course, just play a normal Multiplayer match and hope that the maps appear in the voting stage, but it is a lot quicker to set it up as a Private Multiplayer match as you can select the map you want to play. A list of the maps are as follows:
Avalanche
Blood Drive
Day One
Hail
Jacinto
Pavilion
River
Ruins
Security
Stasis
Win a multiplayer match on each of the 10 shipped maps (any mode)
One of a few skilled achievements. You can either grab a decent partner or try your luck and find a random partner. There’s not really much advice to give other than to stick with your Wingman. If you work closer together, you’ll have double the fire power when it comes to fire fights and you can revive each other if you get incapacitated. You’ll need 15 points to win a Wingman game with each kill gaining you 1 point. Win 3 times to nab this one.
Win 3 matches of Wingman (not Custom)
Guardian mode is just basically protecting your leader whilst trying to assassinate the enemy’s leader. For every round you win with yourself as the leader you’ll gain more progression towards this achievement. If you don’t start as the leader, you’ll need to try and kill the enemy’s leader in order for you to become the leader in the next round. This mode requires a lot of team work so try and find a team who can communicate with each other. It is imperative that when you are the leader you stay alive, so try and make sure your team protects you.
Win 10 rounds of Guardian as the leader (not Custom)
Submission mode is a twist on ‘Capture the Flag’ in other games, but instead of capturing an enemies flag and bringing it back to your spawn, you actually try to capture a human flag (who has the ability to fight back) and carry him by way of ‘Meatshield’, to a specified area on the map. The only help to give on this is be patient. Obviously, head straight towards the human flag and try to capture him. Again, good teamwork is required for this.
Capture 10 meatflags in Submission (not Custom)
I’m sure you’ll know what the King of the Hill mode is. If not, you just need to hold an area (or “ring”) of the map for a specific amount of time. At least one member of your team must be in the given area for your score to count. If you step out of the area the timer will stop. The first team to hold the area for 120 seconds wins. Win 3 matches and the achievement is yours.
Win 3 matches of King of the Hill (not Custom)
Every Multiplayer game you play will be accumulated towards your goal of 1999. It doesn’t have to be 1999 matches, just 1999 rounds, so a game of Annex for example will consist of 3 rounds. If going for the above achievements, you should have knocked out a fair few rounds, making this a little less tedious. If you really want to get this out of the way, there is quick solution. Set up a Private Multiplayer Execution match with 1 bot (set to casual), Total Rounds set to 15, Round Time Limit set to 1, Bleed-Out Time set to 60 and I would use Day One as the choice of map and start the game. What this will do is give the Bot 1 minute to find and kill you. The chances are that he won’t and the time will run out, giving you 1 more round towards this achievement. You can even leave this running whilst you sleep/work or whatever else you may want to do. After a while the rounds will mount up. A good night’s sleep should suffice.
Play 1999 rounds of multiplayer (any mode)
Flashback Map Pack DLC
Set up a Private Multiplayer match against bots and win on each of the following Flashback maps:
Canals
Gridlock
Mansion
Subway
Tyro Station
Win a multiplayer match on each of the 5 Flashback Map Pack maps (any mode except Wingman)
See the solution for “More Mystery, Les History” above, except make sure the Match Type is set to Wingman. Change the Bots difficulty to ‘Casual’ for quicker results.
Win a Wingman match on each of the 5 Flashback Map Pack maps
Combustible Map Pack DLC
Arguably, one of the more difficult achievements in the game is "Annex: Now with Execution Rules". You’ll need to win an Annex match on each of the Flashback Maps and the Combustible Maps, so along with the maps listed under the “More Mystery, Less History” achievement, you’ll need to win on all the Combustible Maps which are as follows:
Flood
Fuel Station
Gold Rush
The only catch is that you have to win this in a public Ranked or Social Multiplayer match. This can be extremely tricky as you only get a choice of 2 maps to vote for at the beginning of the match. These 2 maps are randomly chosen beforehand by the system. You’ll also need to make sure that you win the match in order for it to count towards this achievement. All that can be suggested to gaining this is just persevere.
Win an Annex match on each Flashback and Combustible Map Pack map (not Custom)
"The Roof! The Roof! The Roof..." can be achieved by playing and winning on the maps Flood, Fuel Station and Gold Rush. Again, the easiest way is to set up a private Multiplayer match against bots.
Win a multiplayer match on each of the 3 Combustible Map Pack maps (any mode except Wingman)
Same as “The Roof! The Roof! The Roof...” achievement above, only change the Match Type to Wingman and make sure you win.
Win a Wingman match on each of the 3 Combustible Map Pack maps
MP Rank Update
For every kill, ring capture, assassination, etc. you perform in public Multiplayer or Horde, you’ll gain XP. Once you acquire the relevant amount of XP you’ll gain a level. The higher the level you get to, the more XP you’ll need to get to the next level. This is an enormous grind to get to level 100. Your best best is to either:
- Wait for a special Gears of War 2 XP event, which will mean you’ll get a hefty amount of bonus XP (in some cases 20 times the normal amount)
- Set up a Boosting Session here on TA using the King of the Hill boosting technique, which is as follows. Gather a group of 10 people (5v5). Split into 2 groups of 5. Both teams then need to search for a King of the Hill game from the Multiplayer Lobby and hope that both teams get matched together. If you don’t exit and try again. This requires some communication so make sure you are actually communicating. An extra tip to help getting matched together: If 2 people are from the same country (non-USA), for example the UK, make sure the 2 people are leaders of both of the groups of 5. This heightens the chance that they will be matched up. Once you have been matched up, decide which team will hold the “ring” first and get this team into the “ring” and make sure all 5 players stay in there. The other team now simply stands around the “ring” and should all enter at the same time. Once the “ring” goes back to it’s default colour of white (which denotes that no-one is holding the “ring”) the players who aren’t holding the “ring” should step out, allowing the team already in there to capture it again. What this does is gains capture points for the team standing in the ring and also points for the other team for breaking the ring. Rinse and repeat these steps until they get to 119 points. Once you’ve hit this number, the teams should reverse.
- Security Horde Boosting. Set up a game of Horde on Insane difficulty and select Security as the map. Clear the first wave (it’s not too tough on Insane as you’ll only have a couple of drones and a few wretches), then when wave 2 starts, commit suicide by jumping into the lasers and then start the game again. You’ll gain 250xp per wave completed. You can earn roughly 1000xp per 5 or so minutes if you’re consistent. Use this method with the Gears of War Special XP Events for maximum results.
For best results, combine all of the above.
