3. Achievement walkthrough
Again, from their official rules:
DISCLAIMER: Wordament developers strongly believe that the use of puzzle solvers is 'cheating'. They are actively watching games for gamers who are using solvers and are permanently banning gamers from Wordament that they find cheating. Using any sort of solver is VERY risky and might lead to a perma ban. TrueAchievements.com does not support or suggest behaviour that could lead to this sort of ban.
This guide is divided into four parts: normal puzzles, digram puzzles, themed puzzles and finally the rankings and miscellaneous achievements. Themed puzzles are currently only available in English, but you don't need a thorough insight of the English language. Digram and normal puzzles are available in all five languages, so feel free to pick the language you are most comfortable with. Rankings are mostly based on luck, because you won't see as many words in the second puzzle as you did in your first one.
1 - Normal puzzles
>Available in every language
Just like all puzzles, this is played on a 4x4 field. Most people will find a few words but the bigger words can be pretty... strange. I played the game in Dutch (since it's my native language) and even I asked myself "What the hell is that?!" from time to time. Mark some 3 or 4 letter words just to be safe. There's not really an achievement involved here, but you can check out the miscellaneous achievements below since this will be the place where you will most likely unlock most if not all of them.
2 - Digram puzzles
>Available in every language
Just like the regular puzzles, this puzzles consists of a 4x4 field. There's only one difference: in one of the sixteen tiles there are two letters instead of one. These tiles will give you an additional amount of points whenever you find a certain word including those letters. Anyway, when you come across a digram puzzle, you can make words with 2 tiles if one of the tiles is the tile with the two letters. The bigger the word, the more points you receive of course.
Every time a digram puzzle appears, there are a few words to be found and I have to admit that the Dutch digram puzzles are way easier because they mostly contain less words then the English ones. From my own experiences with Dutch digram puzzles I can say that there is a maximum of 17-20 words to be found (which can be up to 30 in English). I got lucky when I had a puzzle with only 4 words when I unlocked this achievement, so pray for the best when you try to find all digram words. If you find all words that can be found, you'll get a nice achievement.
3 - Themed puzzles
>Only available in English & German puzzles
As mentioned before on this page, themed puzzles can only be found in English. The themes are very random & there are a lot of words that can be found. Luckily, this is not a digram puzzle but this can still be hard if you are only familiar with some basic English words (even pros will have a hard time finding some of these words). However, the user FRENCHDAWG setup up a nice solution on this very website which sums up most words that can be found. I won't write them down here (or copy/paste) since I believe the list will be expanded in the near future but feel free to take a look at it here. In the comment section you can find other words found by other TA members. You will get an achievement for finding one themed word and another achievement for finding all words in one puzzle. Again, I got lucky that I just needed to find 6 instead of 10 or more so keep playing until you find them all.
4 - Rankings & miscellaneous achievements
Available in every language
Let's start with the easier achievements which you could've picked up right now. The achievement you will most likely unlock first pops when you twist the board and think "hey you, I didn't see you there". No matter how big the word is (with a minimum length of 3 letters), it will force the achievement to unlock. If you're confused as to what the little icon to twist the board looks like, please look at this screenshot (credit goes out to www.wp7.nl). It's in the right corner at the bottom.
If you are really familiar with the language you are playing this game in, you will most likely find a lot of words which contain at least one of the letters on one of the sixteen tiles. Please note that I don't mention you have to find a word with all 16 letters: you just have to use all 16. You could do that with one word (and good luck with that!) or you can find 155412878 words which contains one of the 16 letters. To be short: use all 16 tiles in a few words to unlock this achievement.
As stated in the 'Overview'; this game is available in 5 different languages: English, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish and German. If you complete a 2 minute puzzle in more then one language, you'll gain an additional achievement. You really need to complete a 2 minute round in 2 different languages! If you drop into a puzzle mid-game, you'll have to complete that one and the puzzle that comes afterwards. No matter what you're score in-game is, you can add this achievement to your gamerscore (I actually finished a Spanish round with 12 points :D!).
The next two achievement are earned when you play a certain amount of rounds: one for finishing 10 and another for finishing 100. Some people say these achievements could be flagged as 'buggy' but it really isn't: you need to finish 100 rounds playing the full 2 minutes. If you drop in midgame it will still count in the 'stats'-section of this application but it won't count towards the total of rounds you have played. You can finish these rounds in whatever language you prefer or you can mix those up. I did 1 Spanish game, + 20 English games and + 80 Dutch games when my achievement popped so feel free to change whenever you like.
>Note: 'Sore Fingers' is a server side achievement and will unlock in Win8 if you already unlocked it in the WP7-version (and vice versa). There is one requirement: beat one round.
Let's head for another easy achievement: beating someone on your "Frenemies" list. Frenemies can be marked after each round by clicking onto their gamertag, though your Xbox Live friends will automatically be in that list. Your goal is to get a higher score then the ones on your Frenemies list. If you haven't got anyone on that list, you can scroll down when the scores show up at the end of a round and click on the last name in that list. This person will be added to your list. Try to beat his/her/it's (could be robots, who knows?!) in the next round to get this easy achievement.
Now things can get quite hard, even when you are playing in you're native language. The next achievement requires you to find the longest word in a round. You could be lucky and just have to find a 7 letter word, but things can go bad when you have to mark a word that counts 11 letters. Anyway, when you find the longest word in the game you earn a nice achievement. Be warned though: finding the longest word doesn't mean it's the word that gives you the most points!
Let's talk about rankings, shall we? Every time a round ends, you will see your ranking at the top. In the right corner, you will see your percentage and in the left corner your ranking. When there are 200 players in a game and you placed 10th, it's quite obvious you'll be in the top 95 thus 95% of the list. One of the following achievements requires you to get a rank in the first 50% of the board (in this example getting at place #99) and the other one requires you to get in the top 10% (so in this example the 20th place on the leaderboard). These two require both skill & luck but hang in there & you will get there eventually. For a visual of how the ranking looks like, I refer you to the image below. It's a screenshot of how the ranking looks like after playing a game (game played by my girlfriend on her iPhone).
Next up: getting ranked in the top 10. We're not talking in percentages anymore, but really placing in the top 10. This could be quite hard since most people that play this game use a solver (how could an American be #1 on the Dutch leaderboards?!) but if you are fast enough to find long words (or fast enough to find a lot of short words); you might get there. There is only one achievement and it will be awarded when you're in the top 10... 10 times. I didn't have a hard time since I played it when it was just released but I would like to say: good luck!
>Note: This is a server side achievement and will unlock in Win8 if you already unlocked it in the WP7-version (and vice versa). The only requirement is that you need to finish one round in the top 10.
How does it feel to be ranked within the top 10? It tastes sweet, doesn't it? Guess what: there's an achievement which you will only receive if you get in first place. Hang in there, you'll get there!
Let's finish this off with the two hardest achievements in the game. They aren't really that hard, they are rather based on luck. Let's start with trying to get the best score of the hour. I've played a long time before I ever got this achievement, mostly when I was on my to work at 5.00am (GMT+1). I played the Dutch puzzles, where most of the time only 10 or 20 players were playing. Anyway, according to the Wordament website and I quote:
We also wanted to take a moment to talk about how the “Win the hour” and “World Champ” Achievements work. With those achievements we had an interesting problem: The phone code can’t actually determine if you should unlock those Achievements because they require calculations to be done inside Wordament’s service. On the engineering team, we refer to these as Server-side Achievements. Server-side Achievements won’t unlock instantly the way an Achievement like “Swipe those tiles” does, because the service needs to first figure out who is eligible by computing the persistent leaderboards. Once the service has the list of World Champs, it needs to inform the Wordament game client. That means that, in practice, these achievements can unlock after you are done playing a game session. Don’t worry, though! They aren’t lost. The next time you start Wordament, the game will check to see if you have any pending Achievements and unlock them instantly.
You can find the complete article here.
So if I can give you any tips: play late/early; try to find the longest word which contain the letters that are worth the most points (use the uncommon letters) & hope for the best. Eventually you'll receive the 'Win The Hour'-achievement.
>Note: As noted in the article, this is a server side achievement. If you unlocked it on the WP7-version, the only thing you need to do is boot up the Win8 version for this achievement to unlock.
We saved the hardest for last! First I have to mention that there are two leaderboards of top players: total score (all time) & average score. There are two ways to get this achievement but be prepared for a difficult achievement!
The first method is getting in the top 250 players of all time with a total score of at least 250,000 & placing at spot #250. Since the leaderboards get updated every day, you will need to get a bigger score then 250k. You might want to try other languages besides English, since less people are in those leaderboards. If you just started playing this game by reading this guide or because someone recommended it to you, you will have to put in a lot of time & effort into this achievement if you ever wanna get close to position 250 in the English leaderboards.
The second method to obtain this hard achievement (and this is some good news) is playing until you have a total score of at least 85k and play a cumulative total of 100 complete rounds (which means the full 2 minutes). Playing 100 games already rewards you with the 'Sore Fingers'-achievement but getting an average score of 850 points per round can be quite hard. I had an average of 470.7 points when I unlocked this achievement with Dutch puzzles (unlocked it on May 13th, 2012) and played a total of 183 games & a total score of 87,296.
As you can see, the second method is the easiest way to obtain this achievement & I highly recommend you try to unlock the achievement that way.
>Note: This is a server side achievement and will unlock in Win8 if you already unlocked it in the WP7-version (and vice versa). Read the note above the previous solution for more information.
Congratulations: you have completed Wordament (WP)!
