I chose to play X' mode with Ken on normal for this one. Pretty much the quicker you can get your opponent's side filled with ticking gems, the better. Also, building larger color squares and tying them in with combos is the best method. I also unlocked the 5x combo achievement at the same time. When you get to Akuma, just try to be as fast as possible since he will send out large amounts if you don't finish him off early. I just happened to be lucky and get a spinny piece that destroyed half of my stuff and sent it all to him.

If you are not great at the game, the easiest way I have found to do this is in Z mode on normal.

Character choice is irrelevant, I did this with Devilot but Ken may be a better choice.

For each stage use RB to raise the gems to about 3 spaces away from the top then just run around the grid in random directions spamming the A or X button. Whenever a blast gem is connected it freezes for a short period of time with any gems that are connected to it. This allows your random shifting to attach to these to make long chains unintentionally.
Then once there are no more blast gems repeat this process (use RB again). Because of the way this mode works if you keep doing this quickly they will have no blast gems due to your attacks appearing underneath.

If you ever get into trouble take your time and make sure the blast gems get to where they need to. But this mode is rather forgiving and there always seems to be a diamond coming when you need it.

This may seem cheap, but it is much easier than doing this on X' and losing to some miraculous combo the computer always seems to get right at the end. I got it this way first try.
