First make sure you play at MBL mode.
I choose arcade on medium.
With any character play any level you feel ok and collect the items until you reach 1000. Make sure you have all of your (3) lifes.
Stop fighting and let your character to be hit 2 times from any enemy/bullet. Each time you are getting hit you lose 250 items. So 2 hits will cost 500. After that press immediatelly X button to activate power up.

PS Some enemies and or bullets cost you less items for an unknown reason to me.
