Beginner: Andy Schleck (Guepard), Contador (Saxo), Basso (Liquigas), Leipheimer (Radioshack)... You certainly have a lot of choices, and none of them is a bad one.

Normal: Vinokourov (Astana), Evans (BMC), Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) or Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel). Not much harder than with a beginner team actually.

Pro: Scarponi (Lampre), and that's all. My first choice was Wiggins (Sky), but he is actually too limited in high mountain to follow gold climbers. Scarponi is very good in these stages (79 Mountain stat); just make sure that you have at least a two minutes lead before the individual time trial (stage 20), which is his weakness. He will also net you

if you still don't have it (since Petacchi is considered as the team leader).

Expert: Apart from Taaramae (Cofidis) I can't see who can make it. He is surprisingly good in high mountain stages given his (relatively) limited stats. Honestly it was not too much of a hassle to win the Tour with him, but read below if you have some trouble.

Taaramae can also give you

, since he is under 25.

To me the important points to be successful (and not have to replay 21 stages) were the following ones:

- Among your rivals, always focus on Contador. Schleck is a great climber for sure, but you can easily gain some time on him in the time trials; Contador on the contrary is very likely to beat your rider with ease on the individual one. Evans can be a threat sometimes, but he usually loses a few minutes in some high mountain stages.
- Whatever the team , it is easy to be at least in the top 5 of the team time trial (Stage 2) once you get the hang of it. It is a very good opportunity to take more than one minute on Contador, Schleck and Evans for instance.
- The flat stages are incredibly boring to get through and a pure waste of time, good luck with it. Hang on, don't try anything special and save your energy for the mountain stages.
- Once in high mountain stages and unless you play a gold climber (top 5), never attack (even in the last section) or you will lose a lot of stamina and get destroyed by Schleck, Contador and the like. Just follow the wheel of the fastest riders and try not to lose too much time (if not at all) on them. It is definitely harder to achieve with Taaramae; if you happen to lose more than 40 seconds in a specific stage, just reload the last section until you get a better luck.
(By the way: manually save at the beginning of every section, it will save you a lot of trouble and wasted time.)
- Stages 18 and 19 (Hills) are very important because they end with downhill sections with lot of turns, and the AI is really bad and slow there. It definitely takes some practice to be fast while not falling yourself, but these two stages can net you 2-3 more minutes overall, and they can be precious for the following stage.
- Stage 20 is the individual time trial, and that is why you need to have the lead with about 2'30" on Contador in the general standing while playing as Scarponi and Taaramae. It should be enough to stay first.
- Stage 21 is the Champs-Elysées stage with a guaranted sprint, just enjoy the end of the grind and congratulations for your victory!
