As you play through the game you will come to locations with an idol you can talk to and sell items and synthesize. As you approach the idol, you'll get a message saying you can press 'back' to sleep (if you get too close to the idol, 'back' lets you talk to it). Press 'back' and you'll go to the dream world where you can talk to a few people, one of whom is the person who can help you with story quests and give you abilities. Talk to this person and ask for new abilities.

Abilities have to be earned by killing certain monsters so you won't get them right away. You can work on up to two abilities at once (I picked heal and dodge, though it turns out heal is really wimpy and recharges veeeeeeeeeery slowly). When you pick an ability you'll get to see which monsters you have to kill. Try to pick abilities that requires monsters that you have been encountering so far. You can use X to unlearn an ability (even though you really didn't learn anything yet) and pick another one if you think the requirements suck.

After you have selected your abilities, wake up ('back' button) and get to killing monsters. If you warp to an earlier level, the monsters are reset in case you've progressed past the point where they appear. You can check your progress by hitting the 'back' button during the game and going to 'quests'. When you've killed enough to meet the requirements, find an idol, sleep and talk to the person who give out abilities. You'll get the abilities you've earned and you can pick more to learn.

You can only learn a limited number of total abilities of each difficulty. This number can be increased by buying slots (expensive!) from the death idol. I'd recommend buying a few inventory bags before saving for ability slots so you can carry more loot to sell to the idols.
