The objective is to add a trait to a pet through WILLFULLY praising/scolding the pet enough times, on actions that the pet initiates, on its own. Therefore, user-controlled pet actions will not work toward this achievement (i.e., you cannot tell your pet to pee on the carpet or destroy the furniture, wait for the Sim to scold the pet, and hope for the best -- the pet will not learn to be "Neat" or "Undestructive" this way). Here's the easiest way I've found to do this:

1) Create a household with 1 Sim and 1 adult cat. For purposes of this walkthrough, the cat should NOT start with the mutually exclusive "Skittish" or "Adventurous" traits, but SHOULD start with the "Genius" trait. Move them into the unfurnished, northeast starter home (the one across from Rebecca Goth).

2) Move both the Sim and the cat into the living room area, and remove ALL 5 doors from the room (remember to 'show walls,' if you don't see all 5 doors in the build/buy mode). This should leave a room with just the Sim, the cat, and the various kitchen appliances/counters. The objective here is to give very little for the cat to interact with, other than the Sim and the counter top, so if you've added anything else to the unfurnished living room, move it to a different room, or sell it off, now.

*** Note: As Drabik points out in the first comment, adding counters will increase the odds that the cat will interact with a counter (what we want), rather than your Sim.

3) Press the "Start" button on your controller, and go into "Options" -- make sure that Autonomy Level is set to "High Free Will," and that you have enabled "No Autonomy on Current Sim." The latter means that the Sim we're controlling won't go off and try to do anything other than stand there, while we wait for the cat to take actions.

4) Move the cat near the counter, and the Sim to the other side of the room. Take control of the Sim, and begin a short waiting game. With so little to interact with, the cat can only either hop up on the counter (what we're aiming for), or interact with your Sim. If the cat tries to interact with the Sim, cancel the action, immediately. If the cat jumps up on the counter, either "Scold" the cat (which will move the cat towards being "Skittish") or "Praise" the cat (which will move the cat towards being "Adventurous").

Because the cat was made as a "Genius," it should only take 3-4 repetitions of either Praising or Scolding to add the desired trait, and pop the achievement. This whole process should take no longer than about 10 minutes.
