The Companions are one of the 4 factions available within the lands of Skyrim. They are more or less the equivalent of the Warrior's guild in Oblivion and obviously boasts a good selection of combat trainers.

On your first visit to Whiterun, you will be able to start and complete this quest. Odds are you witnessed npc's fighting a giant who turn out to be members of this faction and will direct you to Jorrvaskr trough a quest, the man you need to speak to is Kodlak and is usually found downstairs in his quarters.

The Companions can be found to the north up the stairs from the market in Whiterun. In case you don't find it, use your local map and look for a house named Jorrvaskr.

Complete their initation quest and this achievement will unlock.

ZiM1021Just wanted to point out that I missed the NPCs fighting the Giant on my first visit to Whiterun. For me to start this quest, I just spoke to Kodlak inside the Jorrvaskr, asked if I can join, and had to prove my battle skills. Initiation quest started right there.

Go to Whiterun, to the building named Jorrvaskr. On your map it's due east from the center - it's the big building that looks like (and actually is) a longboat turned upside-down.

First, you'll have to talk to Kodlak. He's usually in the basement of Jorrvaskr. After this, Vilkas will take you outside of the building (in the training grounds of Jorrvaskr), and you'll have to smash into him with your sword (or other weapon) for a bit until he thinks you're worthy.

After this, Vilkas instructs you to give his sword to Eorlund. This is the blacksmith found near the Skyforge (just north of Jorrvaskr).

In his turn, Eorlund will ask you to give Aela her shield. Aela is found in the basement of Jorrvaskr. Aela will instruct Farkas to show you your living quarters. Follow Farkas, and you've completed the Take Up Arms quest, unlocking the achievement of the same name.

EDIT: To negative voters, please explain your vote so I can improve on my solution.

This is a solution for anyone who has found this really annoying glitch during the companions questline.

I had just cleared out Shimmermist Cave and had to go back and report to Farkas in Jorrvaskr house. When i walked in the front door Farkas drew his sword and started talking to me. I followed through with the conversation and closed the convo sequence, walked about 2 steps and he started talking again, stopping me in my tracks! i couldnt carry on with the game at all because he kept stopping me!

I reloaded my save just before entering the house and tried again, it happened the same! so i checked on some forums and found this solution, which i am now sharing with you! but i cannot credit anyone because i cannot remember where i saw it!

If you check your STATS tab in the pause menu and then go down to the CRIME section, see where you have any bounty! you have to pay off ALL bounty in every city you owe bounty. i didnt realise i had 1000 gold bounty in winterhold, so i went to winterhold and paid the guards. when i went back to Jorrvaskr house and opened the door, Farkas didnt jump on me straight away!!!

I could now carry on and speak to the next guy he aimed me towards!

This happens because Farkas and his brother Vilkas are part of the city guard team, so they treat you like a criminal but dont have the "go to jail or pay the fine" conversation choices!

Hope this helps everyone that gets stuck with this!
