After each mission you are ranked on
Time
Damage to Dante
Total orbs collected
And if you used any items during mission.

I highly recommend doing this achievement on mission 2. I completed the level in 4.31 Mins and collected 138 orbs. However I did not get hit at all which is an achievement as well. Achievement pops up at the mission ranking screen.

Another easy mission is to get an S rank on is Mission 5. Its a 3-4 min long mission. I did it in 6 mins and got S rank.

Please comment or like this guide if you found it useful. Thanks!

Just like DMC3, you're ranked in different aspects during a mission. The difference with DMC3 is that you aren't shown how well you've performed during the mission clear screen.

The following points are part of the total ranking:

- Damage taken
- Orbs collected
- Time taken
- Secret missions you solved
- Items you used

Behind the scenes, the first three aspects are graded from D (worst) to S (best, which is worth 500 ranking points). You'll need at least two S rankings in three of the categories in order to get an S ranking. Concrete, this means that you need s a minimum of 1000 ranking points on any mission to get an S ranking.

Secret missions will give you bonus points. So if you're way over the time limit and took too much damage, completing a secret mission will net you extra points, putting that S rank back in your reach.

Items will deduce points from your ranking. The deduction is dependent on the item used. Yellow orbs count as items and will usually reduce your rating to a B or a C ranking. It's not impossible to get an S ranking with a Yellow Orb used, but it's very hard. In short: try not to use items.

To give a concrete example: Mission 1's requirements for an S ranking in the above categories are as follows:
Time limit: 6:00
Red Orb limit: 400
Damage: none

Meeting any two of the above requirements will give you an S ranking. In theory, you can get an S ranking by avoiding all enemies, as long as you find enough orbs.

Entering a room you don't need to enter in order to complete the mission will not give you a lower ranking. Leaving enemies alive will not give you a lower ranking, either.

Theory aside: if you're bad at this game, then mission five on Normal mode is your best bet. You only HAVE to beat one enemy and it can give you enough Red Orbs.
The Shadow is easy to get rid of by critically injuring it. Wait for its pike to come out, then jump straight up so that you land on it and then fire your handguns into it. Once you're back on the ground, stop firing and repeat the above process. You might need to do this once or twice, but the Shadow will turn red eventually. Evade its grabs until it explodes, grab the Orbs, go back to the tower, and use a downward slash to make your way down the shaft were you need to put the Melancholy Soul.

Killing the Shadow in the above way will net you 200 orbs (you only need 100 to S rank Red Orbs) and should put you well within the 2:00 time limit. If you manage to do this while not getting injured, you'll get a 2000 Red Orb bonus to boot.

Good luck!
