To unlock this you'll need to clear out 10 pirate hide-outs which are those black flags you'll see on your map. Typically along hidden and tucked away parts of the coastline, when you hover over them with your cursor the X option will be to 'attack hideout'.

You can discover these either by sailing around, investigating the coastline around pirate controlled waters or by buying tips in the taverns which point you in the general direction.

Once you've found them you'll need a hefty fleet to attack with. Once you start the attack on the hideout you'll encounter between three and seven pirate vessels which will try to ward you off. They start strong and decrease in strength as you break through their defences.

With these all out of the way you're presented with one final option to begin the ground attack. Always, always back out here and QUICKLY return to the nearest and largest port to hand. Repair, re-enlist your deck hands, restock their weaponry (guns AND swords) and then dash back to the hideout.

Timing is key here as the pirates will recall more pirate vessels to help defend their enclave. Towards your later stages in the game you'll wipe the floor with them and be glad of the money, but in the beginning you'll likely not want to drag it out.

Once you complete the ground attack (likely to take two or three attempts and resupplies to dwindle their forces) it counts towards you total of 10.

This is more of a follow on to DavieMarshall's guide.

This achievement popped for me before I even had 10 different pirates in the game, let alone discovered them. After checking the list of pirates, I had 9 pirates in the game but I had only discovered and destroyed 6!

Here's the easy part, if you know an attack is going to be successful (i.e you have considerably more crew than the hideout) SAVE the game. Attack and win. Reload the save and repeat until it pops.

To take out pirate hideouts, I usually attack using 2 convoys that have high fist power.

I start by sending one convoy to the hideout and set it on patrol. While it's waiting to catch a pirate convoy, I send another convoy to the hideout. While that is happening the convoy on patrol has usually fought and won a pirate battle. This eliminates the strongest force the pirates can muster. All subsequent attacking pirate convoys will be of less strength.

Then I send in my newly arrived convoy to attack the hideout. After fighting several additional pirate convoys (2-5 of them), I can reach the hideout itself. At this point, I can either abort the battle with the convoy I'm currently using and send in the convoy that is still on patrol or I can carry on the fight with the current ship. If the ship I'm sending in is of suffient strength, the hideout can be taken in one go. Otherwise, it will take a second run at it using the non-attacking ship.

I hope this helps. The beauty of this system is that it eliminates the need to leave and resupply with men and weapons and thus reduces the chance that the pirates will regenerate more convoys.
