There are 36 total campaign missions, 8 per theme (sewers, beach, spooky, farm,) the first 7 levels of the sewers theme are all part of the tutorial, and completing them will award the Fast Learner achievement. As pointed out in the walkthrough and other guides, this achievement can be unlocked with the cheat that unlocks all single-player achievements, though playing the campaign is not only a meaty part of the game, you can also work towards many of the other game's achievements, earning coins for unlocking worms and such.
The first 7 levels of each theme are normal levels, you use your team of worms to eliminate all enemy worms, and must all be completed to unlock the eighth level of each theme, the "Boss" level. Each Boss level is more of a puzzle than a fight though, and generally aren't difficult and just require figuring out the right moves. You can play the other 7 levels in a theme in any order you want.
The difficulty of these campaign missions can sometimes seem overwhelming. The AI most of the time can fire rockets and lob grenades at you from across the map with unreal pinpoint precision that you simply can't replicate, which can be infuriating, yet they still will occasionally kill themselves or other enemy worms, shooting explosives for no reason and rarely just throwing themselves into the water. Staying in cover and reducing the amount of damage your worms take is essential for completing most levels.
I would recommend purchasing the scientist worms as soon as possible and using a team of 1 Heavy and 3 Scientists for maximum health regen and damage output for most missions. Sometimes a scout worm is necessary for some missions for easier weapon collection, and other missions a team of 4 Heavies can be used for maximum damage dealt when your team is too exposed to regenerate health over time.
This game can also be brutal when simply trying to traverse the terrain late-game, as all mobility items are almost always limited for every mission. Many explosives will create craters that you simply can't jump out of, and can make your worms sitting ducks for the AI's wild grenade throws.
Overall the campaign took me about 20-25 excruciating hours with many restarts and re-arranging my worms' formation. Trial and error is the key here, as strategies are kind of pointless when the AI can lob a rocket completely over the terrain and have it land on your wormy head for max damage. Over. And over. Just keep in cover and hope that last worm decides to point-blank shotgun the barrel next to it.
