Firstly, take note for this achievement, direct control means YOU yourself have to get the kills, AI teammates getting kills do not count. Also, if you aim to get a majority/all of these kills along with a manta, you will also get the
Carrier Command: Gaea Mission (EU)Air Strike MK.IIIThe Air Strike MK.III achievement in Carrier Command: Gaea Mission (EU) worth 222 pointsDestroy 1000 Walruses using a Manta
along the way too.

If you're unaware of what a manta is, then it looks like this;

You can easily get this achievement as early in the game as being able to invade your first island and battle against the enemy walruses. The achievement itself is very easy to obtain, just a very very long process.

Once you find yourself a suitable island to invade, preferably an easier-less advanced island to avoid strong resistance and high tech enemy walruses, once you have found an island of choice, venture inwards until you come across a walrus, make sure you get the walrus alone (to make this easier for you)

Now whether you yourself are using a walrus also or a manta does not matter, but a manta nets you the achievement listed above, so it's a nice combination, now then, continue to carefully shoot at the enemy walrus until it's on fire. Don't worry about it blowing up randomly, it will stay on fire and only blow up if taken damage from something/someone, which is why you should go alone.

Once the walrus is on fire, pause your game, save your game onto a slot of choice, once done, unpause your game and blow up the walrus. Now that the walrus is blown up, pause your game, and load the save you had just made, once loaded up, destroy the exact same walrus again.

No matter how many re-loads you make, the kills will always count towards the total 1000, so given a few hours of continuous kills, depending how many you did prior to this method, you should get it more quickly than letting it come by natural gameplay.

Incase you're unaware of what the walruses look like, even though it's the first unit you obtain, then it's these things;

Good luck!
